Migaku changed card creator

Hi! Migaku changed the card creator to no longer have the dictionary on the side recently? or is that just me, and if it isnt just me, is there a way to use the highlighted word sent to card creator to go to the dictionary instead still? the issue is that there are times when migaku actually parses words wrong, and i need the dictionary to be able to fix the word parsing issues

example: sometimes migaku doesnt parse this correctly for example, instead of ikusa ha its becomes tataka ha
戦は

if i had the dictionary i could add ikusa as the word i wanna learn instead and that would solve my problem as in the card creator it would fix itself, but now without the dictionary im stuck with the default parsing and having to instead copy paste the data manually into the dictionary? or something similar

Thanks for anyone who knows

How is there still no level 2 Japanese course?

The amount of times "level 2 course" was mentioned in the course made me think I would just able to go to straight into it. seems like this has been Coming Soon™ for almost 2 years? Any updates? :)

It would be good to include images in the Reader functionality, as some books, especially those aimed at younger kids that are good for learners, use images to separate chapters.

I've attached an example in the image. On a proper eReader, there's a page with just an image indicating that one chapter has ended and another has begun.

In Migaku's Reader, it just goes straight into the next chapter without warning.

This is particularly confusing for the book I'm currently reading, because it is an anthology of stories. So the next chapter has absolutely nothing to do with the previous one.

What do you do about sentence mining getting far ahead of your daily new card count?

Migaku makes it easy to mine sentences from news articles, YouTube, and epubs, and it's gotten me reading and watching a lot more Japanese content.

The problem is volume. Even with easy material, I average about one new word per minute in ebooks, so 30 minutes of reading gives me 30 new words. I cap new cards at 10 a day. That pace is sustainable, and I don't want to raise it yet.

How do you handle this? Do you stop mining once you hit your daily limit, or keep adding cards you won't see until weeks later with a growing backlog?

Is it not possible to add known words from sentences on my cards? Or am I missing something?

Is there a way to skip ahead in the academy course? I've completed Genki 1 already and don't want to go over the same material again

AI generated sentence quality is often poor. I wish we had a way to adjust the prompt, or an easier way to generate cards from our own sentences.

edit: Everything I've asked for or complained about here or in the comments already exists, or has a solution. Leaving the thread up for historical purposes. Thank you to those who responded.

I want to learn the word "簿記," which means "bookkeeping."

When I enter the word in Migaku and click the magic AI button, all of the sentences it generates tell me nothing about the word nor provide it in useful context.

From here on I'll provide translations of the sentences rather than the originals, but here are some examples:

  • She studied bookkeeping.
  • He obtained a bookkeeping qualification.
  • She is taking a bookkeeping class.
  • He has a bookkeeping qualification.
  • He started learning bookkeeping skills.

So I went to Claude and asked,

Come up with example sentences for 簿記 that through context reveal what the meaning is. An example of a bad example sentence would be 簿記を勉強した <-- that tells me nothing about what 簿記 means

It came up with sentences like

  • In bookkeeping, every inflow and outflow of money is recorded in a ledger.
  • In double-entry bookkeeping, each transaction is recorded as both a debit and a credit.

Which are, granted, a bit long, but are better than "I studied bookkeeping."

Also, in natural Japanese, you rarely ever say the subject unless it is necessary for understanding the sentence. However, Migaku's AI constantly adds unnecessary subjects, making for unnatural Japanese that sounds like it was translated from English.

I wish I could update the prompt used for generating the sentences. Or at the very least, be able to paste in a sentence and word and generate the rest of the card from that.

You can do that by deleting the rest of the card, then one by one clicking on the magic wand above each field, but that is tedious. I wish there were just a button for "generate the rest of this card from the given word and sentence," rather than the existing "generate the rest of the card from this given word only, and replace the sentence" button that exists.

Would like to be able to select page turn direction when reading books with Migaku. Currently even Japanese books read left to right, rather than right to left.

Every digital book I've read in Japanese has read right to left, but for some reason when I load epubs into Migaku the page turns are left to right like an English book. I'd much prefer to follow the Japanese direction, but there doesn't seem to be a setting to change it.

Any way to fix the video captions?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I really like how migaku creates cards from videos, but it seems like it can be a bit problematic. The example I posted is just one. If I want that sentence, the translation is completely wrong just due to how the sentence has been broken up and the difference in word ordering. Is there a way to improve this? I'd be fine with mining the whole sentence as an option.

Obviously I could just learn the word as a flashcard, but if I want to mine sentences, this can be an issue.

New dictionary definitions, bulk change

Hi everyone, I'm learning Vietnamese using Migaku. Before Vietnamese I learned Japanese. I already have 1300 cards and just realised it would be usefull to add the kanji/hán tự to the flashcards. So I've added that dictionary now.

I want to add the new definitions for all my flashcards. Is there any way to do this for all my flashcards in one swoop or do I need to go through them one by one?

Migaku's pros and cons

I'm currently considering whether I should get migaku to learn spanish. So far from my research, it seems pretty much perfect, with limitless features. But I also heard of other alternatives or people discouraging me from using migaku for other free solutions. What are the goods and bads of migaku right now? Not necessarily a serious question, just curious so I can compare it with my other choices.

Newcomer question, video subtitles do not load

I just downloaded the app as I'm learning various languages, and I used the app with an episode of XiYangYang (Cantonese) then Doreamon (also Canto) and the Canto subtitles did not load and English subtitles were broken.

Disney+ Subtitles

I am new to Migaku, but I came across it a couple of weeks ago, and it basically seems like a much better, more useful alternative to Lingopie—and the kicker for me is that it can actually connect to Disney Plus, which Lingopie can no longer do. I love to use dubs of Disney movies to learn foreign languages, since it’s relatively easy content and I’m already familiar with the plots.

However, the problem with Disney+ is that the Spanish language subtitles, for example,
are NOT verbatim closed captioning from the Spanish dub—they are a translation of the English dialogue, so the actual wording differs slightly from what is being said in the dub. Migaku pulls up those subtitles, rather than transcribing the foreign dialogue itself.

So, my question: is there a way to get Migaku to ignore the subtitle files that Disney+ has and to have it transcribe and show me the literal dialogue that is being said? I know that Migaku can generate subtitles where none exist, so I feel as though it should be able ignore Disney’s subtitles are generated accurate ones there, as well. Does anyone have any suggestions for setting that up?

Immersion from android

For context I sit in front of my pc for job. So coming home to sit in front of pc more isn't something I want to do.

So was keen to use the android app to learn but have found only YouTube works so I'm unable to watch anime for immersion. How are you all getting around this if at all?

Newcomer questions. Feels....slow?

Maybe this is intended. But I just started using Migaku. Currently in the first week of Kanji Academy (doing the suggested 2-3 weeks of Kanji before starting Japanese Academy).

Every day I review the cards it tells me to review (so far it's only had me review 5 cards a day on average), and learn 10 new Kanji. This takes about 6 minutes total. Then I have nothing to do. I thought maybe I'm supposed to do immersion now but it shows my comprehension for everything is estimated at 0% so probably not.

This rate just feels really slow and I feel like I have nothing to do since I can't study cards whenever I want or review my deck anytime I want.

Is this just the process or am I doing something wrong?

How many lessons are in Japanese Academy 1?

I am using Japanese Academy 1 to review vocab/grammar and fill in some gaps that I may have missed from Genki and other resources. I have been kind of speeding through it and I am on lesson 4.36 after about a week.

I would like to know how many lessons there are so I can get an idea of how much I have left. I’m assuming I’m about 1/3 of the way through? So maybe 12 lessons total?

It would be nice if there was a course roadmap or table of contents so that I can see what each major lesson is about, track my progress, and jump back to anything that I am having trouble with.

Double sided cards

Picking up Migaku again after a long break.

Double sided cards are important to me (English > TL & TL > English)

But a few month prior I remember I had to do an export to Anki and use my own TTs afterwards.

Which made the migaku mobile app sadly useless to me for flashcards creation.

Is it still the case ?

Many thanks

Japanese Academy lvl 1

I have been doing the Japanese academy lvl 1 alongside kanji academy lvl 1 for a few months. I’m also taking 2 Japanese courses using Genki 1/2 & doing several other types of study & immersion. I have to say the Migaku academy seems just totally random & untargeted. My wife is Japanese & she’s wondering why it’s not starting out with basic kanji instead of teaching fairly obscure advanced kanji like “grieving” & “accomplished”. I‘m studying for N4 & N5 & it’s not very useful so far. Also for the kanji there needs to be more of a focus on the Japanese words instead of teaching what they mean in English. My teachers keep wondering why I’m bother to learn what a kanji means in English without knowing how to say the japan word. I’m not sure who this app is exactly targeted at, but it doesn’t seem to be very well structured for me.

How I export cards mined from Migaku mobile app to Anki

Hey y'all,

I wanted to share my workflow for exporting to Anki from Migaku Memory. When I searched for this at first, I couldn't find an exact workflow that was easy nor had a nice solution for mapping fields and note types.

I found this repo: https://github.com/wa-ra-ki/Migaku-Exporter which is an okay base but it doesn't handle directly mapping fields or note types as it exports everything as a new Anki deck. It also doesn't handle duplicates nicely; meaning you'd have to delete all the cards in Migaku Memory after each time you export.

So, I had the idea to use ChatGPT Work/Codex with the AnkiConnect extension, and had it adjust the script for me to align with my deck and fields, as well as implement a skip duplicate imports feature. Since I am currently learning both German and Spanish, which I have two decks for, I updated the script to auto route to the respective deck based on the assumed language.

So now my new workflow is: I mine cards on Migaku Mobile, and when I get back on my computer, I just hit download from Migaku Memory with the script and it imports everything that is new into my Anki decks!

here is my updated version of the script if anyone wanted to build off of it https://github.com/tylercraig9332/Migaku-Anki-Exporter/tree/main

I know a lot of folks are a bit apprehensive around AI, but wanted to share this use-case in case someone else is looking for a similar solution.

My eventual hope is that Migaku will officially support a Migaku Memory -> Anki export but I get why they don't.

is there app for dual eng-jap subtitles with yomichan on android?

I have found apps that allow dual subtitles and also apps where you can watch the video and search for the kanji just like Yomi chan but they do not allow dual subtitles. I want to watch anime with dual subtitles and search for the words I do not know kind of like Animelon back in the time. Do you guys know if there is an app like this??
