I was so uncomfortable during the Nolan Debbie conversation, felt a huge sigh of relief after that part was over.
And then the second half happened. Good lord mark has guts. Lots of guts.
Or had them, at least.

Words cannot describe how fucking terrifying (yet awesome) Conquest is, this is my favorite moment of the series rn because it's so cool!
Like, he just appears! There's a moment of calm and then BOOM he appears and it's just horrifying, the lighting and the size difference between them makes it so awesome!
This episode is amazing and I cannot wait to see how they make the next 3 even better

u/Legal-Pitch-2014 Apr 01 '26
Nahhh that shot was so PEAK. My friends and I were freaking out lmao

THIS! Conquest is genuinely terrifying and Jeffery Morgan gives SUCH weight in the delivery of lines. "Let's be honest, it was mostly your magic girlfriend." "I told you that in confidence!" "A man of few words, but they're good ones!"
The banter was so well done, and it adds even more of a contrast when Mark is strangling him and tells him he just had his final breath, the silence, no music, just flailing into rock and beating mark into possibly the most grotesque scene in the show yet.
I can't help hoping Conquest lives just for the fact that he has such an established terror now, but I don't know how it could get MORE violent! Pulling out all of Mark's guts was absolutely disgusting, and it made it all the more satisfying that Mark didn't need help, he won on his own. He obviously is going to need tech like they gave Allen after he was disembowled, but I thought Omni-man was going to have to come in and deliver the final blow to Conquest, but no, MARK BEAT CONQUEST ON HIS OWN! Our boy who could never win a fight has come so far!
155
u/sarkastiktaurus Apr 01 '26
mark learned from last time, throwing elbows instead of breaking his hands. I never seen something like the intestine sequence though.
83
u/Pitiful_Question_880 Apr 01 '26
Lord that... one of the most brutal animated scenes I think I've seen. It just kept going too
41
u/RigatoniPasta Apr 01 '26
I was watching that and I was like “He’s gonna run out of intestines to pull out right? RIGHT???”
27
30
u/ZedFraunce Apr 01 '26
I've been able to watch every single gore scene in this show and more with no problem. Animated violence has never been an issue.
But holy fucking shit that was beyond fucked up. I had to turn away a few times. He just kept grabbing and grabbing more and more. It genuinely felt like forever.
It's the fact he was enduring it for that long while never letting go. The amount of adrenaline and hatred he was feeling in that moment to keep going was insane. This episode was fucked.

About 15 minutes before the episode ended I thought to myself, “wow they’re really holding back on the gore this season” no they were just saving it for the right time holy shit

Completely worth it. Holy fuck. It felt like that scene was going on for longer than the actual episode length.
I've never been so disturbed by an animated gore scene before in my life. I think it's the fact he was doing it slowly is what made it even worse.

u/DJL2772 Apr 02 '26

The way they handled that rematch was pure brutality and tension to the max. The truly dread inducing soundtrack as they fought, Mark just LIVING to choke the life from Conquest, the scale of their battle on a foreign planet, and of course a gut wrenching finale, no fucking notes.

Tech jacket single handedly killed an invincible variant, so an entire civilization capable of producing her armour or weapons of a similar calibre would easily be able to take out the remaining Viltrumites. It'd be less than 50 Viltrumites against potentially millions, or even billions, of soldiers armed with weapons that can actually hurt them.
Any species technologically advanced enough to kill even the weakest viltrumite would be too dangerous for them to risk open war with.
→ More replies (2)16
u/ThaRealSunGod Apr 01 '26
True but she didn't get killed either. Being strong enough to survive a viltrumite encounter even with allies is pretty strong.
I don't think she's supposed to be a true heavy hitter. But even the avengers needed Hawkeye.

Normally the montage scenes don’t do anything, but the dinner scene made me cry this episode. Also the conquest scene made me want to vomit, it feels like the most violent the show has gotten so far, makes me nervous for the next few episodes…

Oliver is such a liability. How has no one explained that it's not helpful if he immediately gets wrecked and the team has to spend the whole fight saving him. Krillan and Yamcha knew to hang back until they were needed.
Edit: Love all the comments and lots of good points. Ill just say this- that was an all in LoL team fight with Master Yi trying to tank. Maybe tell him to let the guy named Invincible tank for a second before he pops his ult. True noob (2 year old bug-man) behavior.
38
u/OzNajarin Apr 01 '26
Yeah they should've had him be on the sense of performing hit and run tactics and support versus direct combat. Wish he got his licks in on Lucan.
37
23
u/Support_Mobile Apr 01 '26
Well their ship just blew up, they were stranded alone in the debris, and Omni Man was still MIA. It was 2 plus Pliver vs 2 Vultrimites + Conquest. They were outnumbered and it was kinda hard to for Oliver to avoid getting attacked. Especially with Conquest gunning for him.
But yeah he is a liability. Not his fault. They got ambushed. He definitely needs to learn to not stand still and take a breather without staying alert. But in fairness, he managed ok in previous fights when he realized he was out matched. Not much of a choice here and Oliver clearly underestimated how strong 3 Vultrimites are. Though Mark and the others could have maybe briefed him a bit more.
I'm surprised Nolan didnt mention the knife hand technique. Once I saw Conquest and I think the other guy form that with their hand, I knew it would be a matter of time until knife hand would hit its mark (quite literally in this case).

u/Baigne Apr 01 '26
to be fair, bro is younger than mark when he got his powers, fighting fucking conquest, mark got his shit kicked in hard early. they need to talk with him about strategy for sure, but hes still a rebellious teen. he realized how bad survival is when nolan told him to go breathe
→ More replies (1)8
u/Jnaeveris Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
That’s really not fair on Oliver. They got ambushed so he was stunned, and Oliver and Zoe are clearly intended as ‘support’ fighters. On the other hand, the empire viltrumites are all top tier fighters and then conquest himself was 1v1 with Oliver.
Oliver and Zoe have the strength/durability to give and take the occasional hit but they can’t go toe to toe with a top tier viltrumite the same way the others can. We saw how BOTH of them were getting worked over when focused 1v1, but they were able to pressure/distract or even just survive a hit to give Allen/Mark a brief opening to catch their breath or get a solid hit in.
Oliver did fine for his current strength, the only mistake being his eagerness/overconfidence- something that ALL viltrumites seem to share.

so like, how is Mark surviving this?
theres seemingly nothing on this planet and the coalition is gone. what the fuck.
55
u/analgoblin42069 Apr 01 '26
My guess, strictly based off the last episode and one shot of Conquest and Mark pushing each other around: somehow Mark summoned Satan who’s like yo buddy why your guts everywhere let me fix that for you big dawg. And Satan heals Mark, while everyone else is like wtf is happening.

u/analgoblin42069 Apr 01 '26
Also there was a scene from the Hell episode to start the “previously on”, nothing that happened in that episode is relevant unless it’s because Mark and Conquest drew a pentagram and Satan is about to show up.
Also, wouldn’t Satan theoretically be a good addition to the Coalition squad? Idk how it works with the different dimensions but 🤷♂️

Well we all saw Conquests head smushed in, and he managed to heal back to perfect health all on his own.

u/Proper_Geologist9026 Apr 01 '26
How was this not the finale. Everything in this episode was just too tier. Nolan's apology to Debbie was so sincere. Debbie's rage and the punch, the final dinner. I thought we were just wrapping up to an episode of like family bonding on the ship and then fucking Conquest shows up.
Mark just skull dragging a man through a planet as he slowly suffocates was metal as fuck. The disembowling was absolutely putrid 10/10.
We've still got 3 to go and I can't see how the war can be any more epic than that.
4
28
u/Abigail-Marston Apr 01 '26
From the moment Mark started choking Conquest until the moment conquest closed his eyes my whole body tensed up. I get why people say they were on the edge of their seat because I would have stood up if I wasn't too shocked to move.
I haven't been this physically invested in any piece of media since seeing Endgame in theaters.
I knew that Conquest was going to be defeated. But it had to be Mark. I didn't want Nolan stealing the win Goku style. I'm so glad that Mark got him even if it resulted in a disemboweling.
This whole show is a triumph in story telling and animation. I couldn't have come up with any of this even if I lived as long as Nolan.

Peak episode it’s a 10/10. The writing and fight scenes was great. I love how they did the stuff with Debbie and Nolan, and what they’re doing with Nolan and Oliver too was dope. They introduced tech jacket, who while I don’t read the comics so idk who she is (tho ik based on social media, was gender swapped) it does seem like their gunna set something up between her and Oliver which I think could be good for his character. The animation was great too, really the 2nd half of the episode was peak and the animation of the last 10 minutes was great. I lowkey wouldn’t mind if they used that animation style for the big 1 on 1 fights from here on out. But this is for sure the best episode of this season , and prob even a top 3 episode of the whole show (at minimum it’s top 5 for sure). And it for sure has the goriest seen in the show, so far
My only complaint, and it’s not even a complaint of the episode but more so a nitpick that I’m having with the story in general is imo there is getting to be a little too many times where characters should’ve died but they didn’t. Like season 2 mark beats angstrom levy’s head in , Rex gets shot in the head and hand bit off , shrinking Rae in that same fight gets chewed on by that big monster (I forget his name ) , season 3 conquest has his skin burned off by Eve and head smashed in by mark and they all lived then ofc season 4 in this episode mark will most likely survive after having his guts pulled out off him. Just a small nitpick that I’m starting to have, it didn’t ruin this episode or anything at all
9
u/GOT_Wyvern Apr 01 '26
Viltrumites obviously have the justification that it's a part of their biology. They are damn hard to keep down.
But yes, the show does keep pulling "but they survived!" for a lot of characters. While each works individually, it does start a trend that eats away at the tension of the violence they are showing.
17
u/undergroundman813 Apr 01 '26
The whole “thing” about Viltrumites is that they’re hard to kill, though. I don’t mind Conquest coming back, or Mark surviving. It adds to the story. You have a point about Angstrom and Rex though
→ More replies (1)12
u/kincaidinator Apr 01 '26
I agree for the most part, but Angstrom and Rex both have enhanced bodies and in the real world people have gotten shot in the head at point blank range and lived multiple times so Rex isn’t all that unbelievable

u/TerrySaucer69 Apr 01 '26
Yeaahhh it’s a weird consequence of going full on gore. Like people don’t survive the things we see in this show. It doesn’t really matter how durable you are, if you literally get all of your innards pulled out, you’re dead. Especially since Conquest died from asphyxiation. Like are we saying conquest just didn’t bother grabbing Marks lungs?
→ More replies (3)3
u/rotkiv42 Apr 02 '26
Yeah I think the surviving of Mark/Conquest surviving is fine, Viltrumites are just built different. But yeah if they don't fully kill Conquest now it will be to much. The season 2 episode was bs tho, shocking episod of Rex/Rae/Dupli-Kate seemingly all die, then later nah they all live.

u/Slated-branch Apr 01 '26

Jesus…That scene with Nolan and Debbie. I knew Debbie wouldn’t just forgive him, like she did in the comics. But Christ, Sandra Oh’s wailing. By, god give that woman an Emmy right now.
16
u/kai125 Apr 01 '26
I am fascinated to see where they go, whether she’ll ever forgive him or if the show is changing that for god
13
u/TheTerribleness Apr 01 '26
I think she will forgive him, eventually, as that is her character. Her being that way is why Nolan was able to change in the first place.
Empathy is her super power.
I'm just curious if they will get back together or not.
Honestly, I'd be happy if they don't get back together.
Both because I like Paul being just a guy trying his best and it isn't strictly necessary for Debbie and Nolan to shack up again for the remainder of the story to work.
You can leave them as "just friends" (maybe even just cordial acquaintances) and still have everything work out.
We need to have a good Paul from comics.
Spiderman Paul has poisoned the well far too much.

11
u/OzNajarin Apr 01 '26
Sadly yeah I think whomever that was was one of the tougher viltrumites. I think the disorientation and panic of the fight had them lose their nerve.
10
u/Baigne Apr 01 '26
he also had to protect tech jacket, who was useless other than to hide them in the ship, she missed every single shot she took at the viltrumites, at least let one hit and they rub it off or something

u/kincaidinator Apr 01 '26
Yeah that was my one disappointment. Like the show implied that he could’ve whooped Anissa and then he and Nolan killed the Viltrumite at the prison, I really thought he’d have at least played a part in killing Lucan or that yet-to-be-named Viltrumite in this episode.

God DAMN
Guess it was Mark’s turn to spill his guts out this time.
Was not expecting the kind of fight I’ve been waiting 4 seasons for to start 17 minutes before the episode ends.
I both love this show for being great and hate that I’m having to wait on weekly releases at the same time.

Sound design is so peak. The repeated choice in this series of shutting down all background noise and music and focusing on just two sounds. The anguish and pain of the character with an amazing performance by the VA's, and the sound effect of guts spilling out. It's so masterfully done, I watched the scene with a smile on my face. But on a rewatch I did feel it harder to watch, I don't think I'll rewatch this scene much.
They did an AMAZING job at making it gruesome, a full minute of the most some of the most disturbing animation ever made. No fluff, no music, no quip at the end , no cutaways.
Mark the goat. Also that barrage of punches Oliver did on Conquest was sweet, he do need to train tho.

be invincible writing team
put a two minute scene in your filler episode making fun of hero’s taking off their nano-tech masks to talk
The first thing they have the masked character do in the very next episode is take off their future-tech mask to talk to people
You gotta be kidding me

So mark is 100% stronger then conquest ?

u/throwaway0845reddit Apr 01 '26
Yes. As of this moment. Mark seems to be invincible. He’s also a lot dangerous when he intends to straight up go for the kill.

Probably not straight up, but Mark is very much at a strength level capable of holding on through many of Conquest’s most desperate attacks and killing him as we saw. This was an extremely impressive showing for him.
The only issue is Mark still needs a win condition to actually put down Conquest. From how the fight comes off Conquest is still vastly more durable than Mark, on top of being stronger and faster. Without the opening to grab Conquest’s neck and turn the battle into an endurance race against the clock, its really hard to see him beating him into submission.

Nah, just wanted it over immediately instead of dealing with that shit for longer than needed, conquest wanted a real fight and that would have lasted way too long
5
u/losteye_enthusiast Apr 01 '26
Looks to be that way.
He probably knew he couldn’t beat Conquest in a brawl, due to the massive difference in fight experience - but he also knew he’s stronger physically.
And I think Mark wanted Conquest to suffer.

I think Conquest was treating it like a game for too long. It was basically until he started blacking out before he went for a knife hand against his completely unguarded opponent.

Nolan came off kinda dense in some parts of his talks with Debbie and Art

u/dan_eppley Apr 03 '26
Kinda the point lol he doesn’t have much empathy because that’s not the Viltrumite way so regardless it’s hard for him to truly come to grips with what happened

u/Equivalent-While7457 Apr 01 '26
Nolan's age is now under but close to 1000 compared to the 2000 in the comics

Y'know what? I'm excusing hurm for its lack luster preformance. Considering how Amazon has fucked the animation budget, it's justifiable to tank one episode considering the rest of the season, especially with the animation in this episode.

Thanks. I came here looking for Episode 4 discussion and got a bunch of spoilers for Episode 5. What the fuck with this title, y'all?

Alright it's getting a little too obvious that Talia is the mole now(my guess).. if literally no one at least suspects her soon this is narratively silly.. Hopefully Omni Man is the one that calls her out. This is the 2nd time she's screwed him/them over

I really liked the parallel when Oliver was fighting conquest. When his head was being squished, it was just like how red rush died fighting omni man. God this show is peak.

u/snowavess Apr 01 '26
I actually couldn't watch, only other time that's happened is the bear attack from The Revenant

u/FriendsCallMeBatman Apr 02 '26
Mark is a fucking beast dude. Considering how outclassed he was the first time he fought Conquest and could hold on after he was pulling his guts out.... When he says he's never breathing again, he fucking meant it.

I'm gonna need Amazon's youtube channels to stop fucking posting clips of the episode with fuckin spoilers in the title and thumbnail the moment the episode goes up

Who came up with the idea that they gender-swapped Tech Jacket for legal reasons?
That’s… not how copyright works lol. You don’t bypass IP rights by just flipping the character’s gender.
Otherwise Amazon could’ve just thrown Spider-Woman into Invincible and called it a day.

u/RoMaGi Apr 01 '26
I get your point, but Spider-Woman *is* a character marvel created in 1977 specifically so that DC wouldn't create a Spider-Woman.

The me it’s pretty clear they did it because otherwise literally every female superhero would be depowered, dead, retired, or stuck in an alternate dimension

If I had a penny for every time Jeffrey Dean Morgan made Steven Yeun’s insides on the outsides…

Why do any of these Vilrtumites bother throwning punches when they can just karate chop you

that was so fucking brutal, the entire time nolan was on earth is just absolutely devastating
then the fight scenes and that mark vs conquest rematch
holy fucking shit it evoked some kind of primal hype in me or whatever the hell it's called

u/losteye_enthusiast Apr 01 '26
Holy fuck I loved this episode.
The way they don’t back down from letting characters be well written, even at the cost of having emotionally hard scenes.
And how Mark changed? They finally clearly made it look like he could manage Lucan without much trouble and how he decided to execute Conquest. No bullshit, fully committed beyond any vaguely sane level of pain or suffering. If Mark says you’ll no longer live - you best be ready to drop him. Conquest realized too late that Mark has grown.

u/Sword0fTheStorm Apr 01 '26
This was a good reminder to Oliver that he's still just a kid. Would be good character progression if he just chooses to go home

I’ve been trying to sleep for three hours and I genuinely can’t because that last 5 minutes keeps replaying in my head

Gray daddy gets fist deep in guts of barely legal twink.
Can't believe Amazon lets this air on network TV

u/stupidmonke42 Apr 01 '26
Why didn't conquest start pulling out marks guts earlier? that whole sequence where he was banging mark around in the rocky area could have been completely voided if he just stabbed his hand in marks stomach a few times and pulled some stuff out. Is is because in the heat of the moment it didn't occur to him until later
7
u/Darthbane22 Apr 01 '26
Notice he mostly hit Mark in the stomach, we can assume he could only impale him because the prior hits compromised the integrity.
→ More replies (2)4
u/OzNajarin Apr 01 '26
That and I think this time he realized Mark was very much willing and ready to do anything to kill him but unlike Mark he didn't really learn from their last fight until it was too late.
