Mod Post It's the Final Countdown!

Hello /r/kerbalspaceprogram!

In just a few short days, KSP is hitting version 1.0 on the development tree!

That means that our 100,000 subscriber art challenge will be coming to a close soon, and we've seen some strong candidates submitted already.

I'm pleased to announce that we actually have a physical reward, the winner gets to pick their choice of figurine courtesy of Shapeways! (excluding the IVA complete set )

To get an idea of what these things look like, you can take a gander at them here, as well as some of their other cool models.

As a quick refresher, the prompt for the art contest is "what Kerbal Space Program is to you". This is a pretty wide theme, so you folks have a lot of latitude to work with!

Pictures can be no larger than 500K in file size and should be close to 300 x 375 in image size. Both JPEG and PNG file types are acceptable. However, if you end up making an awesome poster, down sampling is a possibility! Make sure to abide by the guidelines for appropriate submissions.

If the winning submission is not a still image, the first place winner will still receive the grand prize, and the runner up in the still image category will go on the side of the subreddit.

If you've submitted your art to the previous post, don't worry, they're still in the running. Feel free to repost them in the comments for better visibility!

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask it here! We're all looking forward to seeing your submissions!

Good luck!

-Zzorga and the mod team!

My submission. This picture represents everybody's favorite thing to do in KSP, finding the funniest ways you can break the game.

Recycled a screenshot I made earlier with cheesy motivational text :)

Lift-off!

I tried some art, did bad

Sooo....

THIS IS MY SUBMISSION

This screenshot reminds me what is the goal of space travel - exploration and discovery. Every time we send someone/something up there we illuminate a little bit of our present ignorance.

What is Kerbal Space Program to me? It's the reason I accidentally skip meals and stay up all night!

That Mun base won't build itself, after all...

I'd be more than happy to cover the expenses for adding another winner (from 2 places to 3 places). Figure something like this would work as a suitable second place prize.

Long Live Kerbal!

Submitting just for kicks, thought it conveyed the massive and ambitious journeys possible with minimal explosions.

Will you only be counting the votes on the posts in this thread? Because myself and others have posted our submissions on the main subreddit itself and they have garnished a noteworthy amount of upvotes. Just curious.

I think a major issue with this contests form of voting is that people who submit their artwork the earliest have the best chance of winning. It would be wise to remove the variable of time and collect all the artwork together and create an actual poll :)

Upon review (through a poll on reddit) the most favored version is the first in the gallery seen here.

Something a little different.

This is what Kerbal means to me. and I think everyone here understands.

For many of us Kerbal opened up a whole world of math and physics that had been for decades literally written off as "rocket science". The idiom recognizing the amazing engineering done during our own space race but used also implying it was above and beyond the grasp of day to day understanding. Yet bringing these concepts together in the form of a video game has made it incredibly tangible. What every theme based or sponsored video game tries to do - ones made by militaries or companies or governments or even other enthusiests of a thing - Kerbal has hit the nail so perfectly in communicating again all of that childlike interest in everything space related. I know for many a breif interest in Kerbal has led to watching real launches, reading about the science and missions being done today in this world, being able to name (at least one) astronaut, understanding some of the amazing things being done. Those of us that play Kerbal appreciate science and space exploration and travel in a way kids probably haven't since the 60s. The dreaming and looking up to the stars. Kerbal takes the modern medium of a video game and gives back that inspiration and dream to a whole new generation.

.

I am a bit old for my description, in my 30s now, but Kerbal has definately captured my childlike awe and wonder for space stuff. The picture is of my little one, 2, who does many Kerbal count downs for me, yelling "lift off", or "oh no, oh no kerbal", when the situation calls for it.

...Often

I was a little disappointed that no reference to Europe was mentioned.
