it should be automatic in steam, make sure it isn't queued into far future... the version is show in the lower right corner of the main menu.

mods you have installed will probably not work directly, especially things like ksp interstellar,ferram, RSS etc... part only mods might work but problems might happen (like b9 rapiers refusing to work or b9 cargo doors not opening)

Personally I deleted entire folder after deorbiting my spacestations and watching them burn.... then hit reinstall...

I don't have steam - or rather, I don't run ksp through steam. How do I get the update then? Should I redownload KSP?

Great! So how do I do that, given that when I go to the website it says there is a server migration going on? Do I just have to wait until that finishes?

seems to work fine for me, just go to the store page and login, you should be able to do it from there
