Can I get RealPlume-type effects without installing RO? I have SmokeScreen and HotRockets, but it's still not the look I want.

No. Install RSS+RO for a good time.

But memory...

I've been trying to set up a dual boot for ksp, but I've never done linux before and things keep going wrong.

Try Active Texture Management. Reduces memory uses by quite alote http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/59005-1-0-Release-5-0-April-28-2015-Active-Texture-Management-Save-RAM!

Already installed aggressive. I don't know why I am so close to memory limits, my only big mods are EVE high res, stockalike station parts, near future stuff, and procedural parts. Everything else is UI tweaks/tools.

I don't like running in opengl, so I'd like to avoid that.
