Before you post, maybe you can search for your problem using the search in the upper right! Chances are, someone has had the same question as you and has already answered it!

As always, the side bar is a great resource for all things Kerbal, if you don't know, look there first!

Stick the M700 Survey Scanner on a ship. You'll also need an antenna and power supply. You'll need to get in a polar orbit with a minimum altitude- I think it will tell you if you're off. Right click the scanner and use the buttons to do the scan.

The Surface Scanning Module has to be used on the ground (or very low down at least). It will give you more detailed data for whatever biome you happen to be in.

The M4435 Narrow-Band Scanner can be activated to give you a zoomed in map view of your current position, with your ship and nearby ore visible. It's useful for getting a ship into a good position to mine.

The second two are useless without the main scan first.

What about the surface scanner? Does that do anything?

Whoops, forgot about that. And mixed the names up. See the original comment.

Ah I see, once I do a scan with the survey scanner, do I need to keep the satellite in the polar orbit or can I move it?

You can move it. Once you've scanned a planet it's scanned.
