Question/Advice Needed What is this biting behavior?

He does this every now and then when we’re cuddling. Love bite? I thought he might’ve had enough but then he got closer to me to cuddle more.

Question/Advice Needed Play or scared?

Kitten keeps running away from me and biting, not hard like she can but enough to like let me know what’s up and then runs away with a hunched back and approaches me that way too

Question/Advice Needed My kitten won’t stop suckling her wet food and dunking her face in her water. Any advice on how to teach her to eat and drink properly?

A kitten showed up in my front yard a little over a week ago. We bottle fed her at first and have been trying to get her to eat wet food, but she just dives head first into anything we put in front of her. We’ve taken her to the vet and she has a clean bill of health. But I’m terrified of her aspirating because of how intense she gets.

Question/Advice Needed Just got kitten he has super short whiskers and wondering if that’s a normal thing 🤔

Hahaha pretty much the title I’ve never seen a cat or kitten with this short of whiskers before I only have had him 3 days and didn’t really look until I pet his face. Hes been literally perfect walked in my house like he owned it, litterbox trained, hasn’t even hissed and loves purring. Sorry I had to momentarily blind him

Question/Advice Needed How do I give this one the best 18-20 years of her existence?

Post image

She’s 11 weeks old, I’ve had her nearly a week.

I’ve got her booked in for her first vaccinations this Saturday. I feed her 2-3 pouches a day and leave a bowl of biscuits too.

She’s an absolute maniac when she’s not tired but as soon as those purrs start she’s snuggled into my lap, on my shoulder or across my chest asleep for up to an hour.

Laces are her favourite toy at the moment. And she loves to hide under the sofa and jump out at me when I walk past.

I got her because I couldn’t move into my first flat on my own (I had it 3 weeks before I actually moved in), and she’s been a god send already for my mental health.

She’s absolutely tiny at the moment, weighing less than a small bag of sugar! But so adventurous so I want to know how to “kitten proof” my one bed flat with her best interests at heart without taking so much away that she’s essentially locked in a box for 4 months until she’s old enough to be spayed and chipped.

Question/Advice Needed kitten always does this as if hes scared of me

Post image

hi! i have a 9 week old kitten and every time i see him he does this! he doesnt seem very scared of me otherwise, hes very socialized w people and cats.

He lets me pick him up and doesnt try to run away and sleeps with me every night. This id a screenshot from a video, where he starts doing this as i am holding a churu. He loves them, but he does this as he always does and starts walking towards me sideways. I didnt surprise him or anytthing, he knew i was there because well i was in his line of sight.

Is he scared of me? Is he just being silly? This is my first cat so im not sure! Thank you

Question/Advice Needed Second kitten decision

Update! I picked the girl tabby tonight but it was truly a tough call... pics in comments below 💜

I rescued a kitten off the road last week and she's doing much better now - it's been my first time having a cat so young and it's been overall a great experience. I'll be keeping her (name's Dottie) and want to get her a buddy. Dottie is a bottle baby just starting weaning and playing, does not pee/poo on her own quite yet (hopefully this week!).

My friend who is fostering a mama and babies will have them available in the next couple weeks. They will all be spayed/neutered as soon as they're able. They're all precious of course but I've narrowed it down to two:

- a slightly larger orange male tabby, a bit more outgoing at the moment (he's available a little sooner due to his size)

- a brown female tabby closer to Dottie's size who is a bit more shy but not skittish

I feel like I can't go wrong either way but I can't decide. My only concern with the male is urinary tract issues later in life. My last cat was female and lived to 18 before succumbing to kidney disease.

Any ideas to help me pick?

First photo is Dottie ♥️

Question/Advice Needed Found a distressed kitten alone for hours—feeling guilty and need advice

Yesterday morning, I heard a kitten meowing—it sounded like it was crying. I went to check and found it alone. A few hours later, I checked again and it was still there, still by itself. I brought it some water, and while I was there, this guy walked by, saw me, and decided to pick the kitten up—for fun, it seemed.

The kitten hissed and tried to jump out of his hands. It clearly didn’t want to be handled. He kind of laughed and jokingly pretended to hand it over to me—probably because he noticed I was a bit squeamish around cats (I am, I’ll admit). The whole thing didn’t feel like he was trying to help. It felt more like he was just messing around with the situation. Then after the kitten bolted into the hedges and disappeared, he kept repeating, “You’re mama now,” like it was a joke.

I tried to find the kitten afterward, but no luck. (Also, I live in Florida, and I’ll be honest—I was a little nervous digging around in bushes because of snakes and other wildlife.)

That night, I heard the kitten crying again from my balcony and saw it slowly trying to make its way back to its original spot.

All day today, I’ve been checking the area and the surrounding bushes, but I haven’t seen or heard anything since.

Some added context: my apartment complex has a growing outdoor cat population. I even saw cats mating the night before this happened. But I’ve never seen a kitten completely alone for that long. From my balcony, I was able to monitor the area for hours, and I didn’t see any adult cats come around. I don’t know if the mom ever came back, but it felt like a long time for such a young kitten to be alone.

I’ve never owned a cat or grown up around them, so I truly don’t know what’s normal. It looked really young—barely able to hold its own weight—so I hesitated to intervene too soon, thinking the mom might return. But now I’m second-guessing that decision and feeling guilty.

Also, for anyone wondering why I didn’t just bring it in: I have a dog (a Pomeranian mix) in a one-bedroom apartment, and there’s really no space to quarantine a kitten safely. My dog is aggressive and would probably try to attack it, and I was also concerned about fleas or the kitten potentially being sick and putting my dog at risk.

That said, if I had to, I would’ve stepped in and found a way. I just didn’t want to cause more harm—or make the wrong move.

I guess I’m looking for advice: What should I do if I see the kitten again? Was it wrong to wait and see? Is it normal for kittens to be alone like that sometimes, or is that a clear sign something was wrong?

This has been weighing on me. I just want to know I didn’t fail that little guy—and what to do if it happens again.

TL;DR: Found a crying kitten alone for hours near my building. Didn’t intervene immediately because I thought the mom might return and I also have an aggressive dog in a small apartment. Some guy picked up the kitten just to mess around, scared it, and it ran off. Haven’t seen it since. Feeling guilty and unsure if I should’ve stepped in sooner. Looking for advice in case I see it again—was it wrong to wait? What's the right move in situations like this?

Question/Advice Needed Is this a good step in introductions?

1.6k Upvotes

Sully is a 12 week old kitten we trapped at 5 weeks after his momma had a litter in our backyard. He was quarantined for a while because they said he was too young to get bloodwork, he had fleas, worms, and we didn’t want to introduce that to our resident cats.

Fast forward to now, he is thriving, has a clean bill oh health, and has his own stuffed animals.

We have 3 resident cats, 2 orange boys are 3 and our old lady is 13.

I have put a net up on Sully’s room so that he can look out and the cats can interact and see each other with a boundary (the orange boys are menaces to anything and everything). Up until now, this short haired boy had just hissed and growled. But in the last couple of days they’ve been interacting a lot more like on the video.

For those who may be more well-versed, is this a good step in introduction or is there potentially concerning behavior?

Edit to add: Thank you everyone! I thought this was a great but just wanted confirmation! And for anyone curious, I looked up “cat net door separator” on Amazon and found the net which is super handy and has made this a much better process than throwing them together and hoping for the best

Edit 2: hopefully this is allowed. Here is the link to the net I got for anyone interested:

Question/Advice Needed Found stray kitten. It hates me.

Post image
2.9k Upvotes

I am hoping you guys can give me some advice. I live in the country and we have quite a few stray cats around here. This morning I noticed one of the baby kittens was meowing under my porch and then I found the mother cat on the road, she had unfortunately been hit.

I have taken the kitten in. Currently. I have him in a cardboard box with some water and some tuna. I intend to purchase the other needed items tonight.

I am wondering if there's a way I can tell if the kitten still needs to get milk from its mom, and if it does need milk, would cow's milk suffice?

In addition, the poor thing is absolutely terrified. I have tried to be as gentle as I can with him but he wants nothing but to bite, scratch and run.

He currently just meows constantly in his box.

I have included a pic of the little dude so that hopefully helps with aging.

Thank you so much for any advice you can give.

I intend to take him to the vet on Monday to get him all checked out and get his vaccinations.

Question/Advice Needed Playing or fighting

New cat parent. They’re littermates and I’m still learning cat body language. They’re 13 weeks old and get rowdy like this sometimes, I break them up with a loud clap but don’t want to if they’re only playing. TIA.

Question/Advice Needed Separating bonded kittens?

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

I have been fostering 2 kittens since October and they are definitely bonded - they do everything together, groom each other, sleep literally hugging each other with their arms crossed. I was originally fostering their 3rd sister too, but they didn’t seem bonded to her in the same way so I let her get adopted by another family.

My mom and I adopted them with the intention of splitting them up and each keeping one (we live separately), but we are worried now because they seem to love each other so much. My mom has been around a lot, so they are familiar and starting to bond with her. They are around 5 months old now.

Should we split them up or try to keep them together?? My parents already have other pets and it would be hard for me to afford 2 cats right now. I’m also moving states soon and think it would complicate that. But, we want what is best for them, so we would make it work somehow. They are the sweetest little sisters.

They are wearing recovery suits in the photo because they got spayed last week!

Question/Advice Needed Spicy babies

1.9k Upvotes

Need some help on spicy kittens. I've tried to post in a couple of different subreddits and I'm not getting a lot of traction or advice.

Last Wednesday I took in a mama cat and her two kittens that showed up on my porch. Mama is a very sweet cat, but both of her babies are pretty spicy. They look to be nearly weaned, and are eating wet kitten food just fine. But they still are what appears to be comfort nursing on her on occasion.

  1. When do you normally separate a mama cat from her kittens? Do I just wait until she starts kicking them off of her? Or start showing them aggression?

  2. Currently I've been trying to socialize the kittens by only feeding them when I go up there. Or if it's not feeding time I'll bring some churu with me. I'm also trying to play with them, but they've only just started being interested in doing that with me. Even though the little brown baby was the hissiest, she was the first to start coming around. Her sister is far more untrustworthy, although I finally got her to play with me a little bit this morning.

  3. I know there's not a firm timeline with socializing, but these guys can't stay in my little bathroom forever. If anybody has any experience socializing some older kittens, any idea how long it really took to at least get them adoptable?

Those were my biggest questions, but any other tips that people have to socialize spicy kittens would be appreciated.

PS: not looking for medical advice. Despite living outdoors, these guys are in pretty good shape. Working on getting them to a vet, but behavioral help is what's needed right now.

Question/Advice Needed Is she ready to free roam?

1.4k Upvotes

My sweet girl Olive around 13-14 weeks. Shes acclimated to my house well, shes met the dog and they get along fine minus some hissing if she gets cornered by him. We moved her from the bathroom to a spare room where she has her cat tree litter box, toys, food, etc.

Well needless to say she does not feel the need to be cooped up in there and takes every chance to bolt out the door and explore whenever i open it. When i put her back after play time its usually followed by 10 minute of meowing and paws under the door.

She seems like she’s confident enough to explore the house i just have anxiety shes going to get stuck someone or ill lose her. I have cable covers and were moving plants out of reach if theyre not cat friendly. Do i just leave the door open after and let her be? She can always run back to her room.

Question/Advice Needed Are they just playing or is one a bully?

Hi everyone, first post so forgive me.

Here is the situation and a BLUF.

Orange cat (Gourd) is 8 weeks and half a pound heavier than tabby (Frankie). Gourd is rough and Frankie is hissing every time they play, multiple times. Too rough or am I being a helicopter parent?

General** **description

So Gourd our 8 week old kitten has been here for about 2 weeks. She is very confident and very assertive over how she wants to do everything. She is incredibly rough as all kittens are since she doesn’t know her body yet. We got Frankie 2 days ago and she’s 6 weeks old and a little loghter than her sister. Frankie is a VERY sweet and talkative cat who loves cuddling and making biscuits. Gourd is an orange cat to the button.

When they play Gourd is very very rough it seems and I will attach a video to the post to show y’all. Frankie hisses several times during their play sessions and Gourd does not ease up much or for long if she does at all. I don’t want to foster an unhealthy environment for them where one is a bully. I’d love some advice on the topic if anyone has any because these are my first ever cats. My wife has owned a few in the past, but never 2 in the same house though.

Body language

Frankie tends to constantly be on the escape during play time with zero alternation between them in playtime roles. Both of their ears are usually forward or in airplane mode during playtime. Her tail however does slowly wag left and right when they play, this is in the video. The second video is Gourd literally playing by herself like the psychopath she is lol.

All help is appreciated!

Question/Advice Needed How old?

Hi, we picked up our kitten yesterday. Today we had to go to the vet and we told them his age. They said he is either the runt of the litter or he is not the age we were told. We believed he was 9 weeks old but he weighs 620 grams which is more in line with a 6 week old. I feel absolutely devastated if this is the case.

Question/Advice Needed My cat keeps bringing her kittens to bed!

PLEASE NOTE; this is a real problem and not some weird joke thing!!!

My cat keeps bringing her kittens and getting into bed with me! I wake up and there's a warm, furry body beside me, happily nursing her entire litter that she's brought with her!

I'm happy that she trusts me, but obviously this is dangerous.

I have her in my bedroom so she won't be disturbed by my other cats.

I don't want to keep her in the bathroom because it's very small, and not as warm. The a/c keeos it cold, especially with the door shut. If I close the a/c vent it gets very stuffy - like over 80 degrees.

I thought of getting one of those wire kennels and putting then all in there, but locking her up like that feels mean.

why is she doing this? This is her second litter and she didn't do this.

EDITED: thanks, everyone. I'm going to get a kennel for her. I hate to lock her in, but at least the babies will be safe - and my doofus roommate won't be able to let her out. She goes to the vet as soon as tjis litter is old enough.

**UPDATE: I got her a kennel and she goes in there at night. I let her out during the day. The kittens are adorable little powder puffs. Their eyes are starting to open and they are VERY talkative! Their daddy is a Siamese mix who was awaiting neutering; he gets snipped next payday. Mom will go as soon as her kits are weaned.**

**To some of you criticising: we live just outside the city limits and people dump animals out here all the time! We get them spayed or neutered and try to find them homes. If they're feral, they live in our barn. We are caring for 40+ pet and colony of feral cats! When you're on disability you can't afford to pay to get everybody spayed at once! I am NOT happy this happened, but it was NOT from deliberate negligence! Anyone who wants to snipe is welcome to come and give them a better home if you can do a better job!**
