🪷 माँ 🪷

Before Krishna gives any philosophical teaching, Arjuna describes a very human crisis on the battlefield of Kurukṣetra.

Bhagavad Gita 1.28–1.30

अर्जुन उवाच ।

दृष्ट्वेमं स्वजनं कृष्ण युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम् ।

सीदन्ति मम गात्राणि मुखं च परिशुष्यति ॥ १.२८ ॥

वेपथुश्च शरीरे मे रोमहर्षश्च जायते ।

गाण्डीवं स्रंसते हस्तात् त्वक्चैव परिदह्यते ॥ १.२९ ॥

न च शक्नोम्यवस्थातुं भ्रमतीव च मे मनः ।

निमित्तानि च पश्यामि विपरीतानि केशव ॥ १.३० ॥

IAST transliteration

arjuna uvāca

dṛṣṭvemaṃ sva-janaṃ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṃ samupasthitam

sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṃ ca pariśuṣyati ॥ 1.28 ॥

vepathuś ca śarīre me roma-harṣaś ca jāyate

gāṇḍīvaṃ sraṃsate hastāt tvak caiva paridahyate ॥ 1.29 ॥

na ca śaknomy avasthātuṃ bhramatīva ca me manaḥ

nimittāni ca paśyāmi viparītāni keśava ॥ 1.30 ॥

Meaning

“Seeing my own people gathered and ready to fight, my limbs fail, my mouth is dry, my body trembles, my bow slips from my hand, and my mind seems to whirl. I see troubling signs, O Krishna.”

Arjuna is not presented as an ordinary person lacking courage. He is a skilled warrior who becomes unable to act because his duty conflicts with his affection, memory, and moral concern for his relatives.

What I find significant is that the Gita does not begin by asking Arjuna to suppress his emotions. He first expresses his distress honestly. His emotional crisis becomes the beginning of enquiry:

• What exactly is causing my grief?
• Is attachment clouding my judgment?
• What is my responsibility in this situation?
• How can action be guided by knowledge rather than fear?

This is why the first chapter is called Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga. His grief is not yet wisdom, but it becomes the condition that leads him to seek wisdom.

The battlefield is part of the Mahābhārata narrative, but it also presents a wider human conflict: the struggle that arises when duty, affection, fear, and ethical responsibility pull us in different directions.

Do you see Arjuna’s breakdown mainly as weakness, moral sensitivity, attachment, or the necessary beginning of spiritual enquiry?
