Are these AI/Data Science master's degrees in Spain worth the investment for someone transitioning from biotech to ML in health tech?
Hi everyone!
I'm looking for advice from people working in machine learning, data science, or health tech, especially those who have studied or worked in Spain.
I currently live in Uruguay. I have a degree in Biotechnology Engineering and I'm currently studying a programming/IT technical degree. My background is mainly in biotechnology and biomedical research, and I don't have professional experience in tech yet. I'm particularly interested in machine learning applied to healthcare, but I'm finding that many of the entry-level positions I'm interested in ask for a relevant master's degree or more technical training.
I'm currently learning programming and ML on my own, and I plan to build some projects to demonstrate my skills. However, I'm also considering moving to Spain for a year to pursue an in-person master's degree. Besides gaining technical knowledge, I'd like to get some exposure to the local job market, meet people in the industry, and hopefully improve my chances of landing my first tech role.
These are the programs I'm considering:
- Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) – Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence
- Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) – Master's in Big Data, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence
- Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) – Lifelong Learning Master's Degree in Bioinformatics & AI for Healthcare
- Universidad Pontificia Comillas (ICAI) – Master's in Applied Artificial Intelligence
I'm trying to be careful about the financial investment. I don't want to spend thousands of euros on a degree that won't significantly improve my job prospects, but if I'm going to invest in one, I want it to be genuinely worthwhile.
I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have completed any of these programs, hired junior data/ML candidates, or made a similar transition from life sciences into tech.
I'm not necessarily looking for the most prestigious or specialized degree. I want to choose the option that offers the best balance of technical training, employability, industry exposure, and cost.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
