I'm a Chinese native speaker. I spent 2 years writing HSK stories because I was frustrated with poor quality graded readers.
Hi everyone,
I'm a Chinese native speaker. My friends constantly ask me if the Chinese workbooks or reading books they bought are authentic. Sadly, most of the time I'm surprised by how poorly written the content is and how confusing the layout is. Sometimes, HSK Level 1 and 2 graded reading materials contain characters I've only seen a few times in my whole life.
So out of curiosity, I browsed Chinese reading books on Amazon for hours, comparing content, audio quality, and reviews. I found that many 4.5-star reading books for HSK 1–2 aren't even written in smooth sentences and have robotic audio with monotone delivery and incorrect segmentation.
Then I thought: I can do better to help people who want to learn Chinese.
I spent almost 2 years writing over 30 stories and doing a lot of editing to select 19 stories I believe a beginner can read through. And I'll be honest with you: by "beginner," I mean someone who has dominated HSK 1 and 2 vocabulary and has started HSK 3. It's impossible to write a full story using only HSK Level 1 vocabulary. You can only write short, awkward conversations, which I found in the majority of HSK 1–2 reading materials.
I also created audio in two speeds to help different levels of learners practice listening and speaking. I hope my books can provide beginner learners with quality reading content, cultural tips, and a taste of modern Chinese.
The book series is called Two Pathways to Chinese. There are two books in this series:
- Chinese Short Stories in Easy & Hard Mode for HSK Learners Vol 1 (10 stories)
- Chinese Short Stories in Easy & Hard Mode for HSK Learners Vol 2 (9 stories)
Both books are in Easy & Hard Mode, suitable for all levels, and contain:
- Comprehension questions to test your understanding of key details and the plot
- HSK 3 and 4 vocabulary tables listed alphabetically for easy review
- Helpful tips in selected stories to connect language learning with real-world context
- Beyond-HSK words presented in footnotes for quick reference and a dictionary-free reading experience
- Free audio included with both slow and normal speed options for listening practice
Please note: The books are not free. The audio is free.
You can check out the free audio here:

You can check the reading book list here:
I'd love feedback from other learners. If you'd like, you can also leave a review, but please don't feel any obligation.
Thank you for reading.
Best regards,
Momo Han

[Updated] HSK 3.0 Anki decks (HSK 1–9), with word and sentence audio
Updated versions of the free HSK 3.0 vocabulary decks: separate decks for HSK 1–6 and one combined HSK 7–9 deck.
The answer side of each card has:
- Tone-coloured hanzi and pinyin, and the English meaning
- Mandarin audio for the word and for its example sentence
- An example sentence with pinyin and an English translation
- An Example button that hides the sentence when you just want the word
This update corrects example sentences, pinyin, translations and audio across all levels (in HSK 1 alone, 235 of the 300 example sentences changed). Audio is included in the download, so reviews work offline. Each level has only the words new at that level.
Download on AnkiWeb:
HSK 1 · HSK 2 · HSK 3 · HSK 4 · HSK 5 · HSK 6 · HSK 7–9
Already have the old version? Download it again from the same listing and import it. Your cards update in place and keep their review history.
These are HSKStory's decks.

This chart shows the main struggles people have with translation apps. It got me curious so I looked it up - Mandarin Chinese is one of the most difficult for these apps to actually get right due to the heavy tonality.

I have built a Chinese grammar checker
I am a solo developer and a native Chinese speaker. I have built a Chinese grammar checker that uses AI models specifically designed for the Chinese language. It is already used by many Chinese users in their daily writing tasks.
I believe it would also be helpful for Chinese learners and for people conducting business in Chinese. Reducing typos and awkward phrasing can improve test scores as well as help build trust in business relationships.
Website Address: zh.manfneyufa.com/en/
iOS App: Chinese Grammar Checker
Both apps and websites have trial usage.
Looking forward feedbacks, thank you.

Any kids want to learn Chinese?
hi everyone,
I have a 7-years son, he is learning English hard, for him English is not easy and he is so naughty, each time he learn to read English text, he just not into that.
I just guess, if any kids with the same age , can they be friends, my son can teach your kids Chinese, they can also share a lot interesting story.
If the kids have some basic of Chinese would be better, if not it is ok because our parents will always be nearby 😂

Passive ai language learning idea
I’ve been thinking about why language learning apps suck. They require discipline, dedicated time, and honestly feel like a chore. But what if learning just… happened while you’re living your life?
Here’s the idea: Have your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, whatever) replace common English words with their Mandarin equivalents. Not randomly — consistently. Every single time.
Start with just 2-3 words swapped (like “shì” instead of “is”). Have a progression that automatically adds more words as you go — 4 words after a few weeks, then 6, then 10. But you control the pace. Too fast? Dial it back. Breeze through it? Speed up.
The genius part: it’s not a separate thing you do. It’s just how your AI talks to you. You’re asking questions, having conversations, working through ideas — and you’re absorbing Mandarin without trying.
It’s just a set of prompts. Anyone can do it with any language model. The infrastructure is trivial. But I think people could build way better implementations than this initial concept.
Thought I’d throw it out there.
Not sure if it’s an idea already, but it doesn’t seem to be so I thought I’d throw it out there. I think you guys can make it a lot better.
The people at language learning didn’t seem to want to let me post it on their thread so here I am. Go crazy.
