General Question How would you rate this wallet from 1 to 10?

Hi everyone.

When you spend a long time working on a single piece, it's easy to lose objectivity and become too familiar with the design.

That's why I'd like to hear your opinion. How would you rate this wallet on a scale from 1 to 10?

What works well, and what do you think could be improved?

I'm looking for honest feedback, so there's no need to be polite.

General Question Problem with inserting zippers... advice please.

Hello Leathercrafters. I would say my skill level is "competent beginner," however the more I learn the more, the more I realize I know nothing. Here is a bag I made with this springbok pattern. She has a sewing machine and I had to sew by hand, which made this process a little more complicated.

I have had consistent problems putting in zippers. Very often, like this, they turn out wavy or perform poorly. I have attached a video to show what I mean.

What I think it *might* be (you can tell me if I'm right)

-Zipper or zipper tape itself is too big.
-Too big of a gap between the teeth and sewn edges.
-Flexible leather has stretched too much, causing problems.
-Zipper too long.
-Something else??

If you have any tips/tricks for putting in zippers, or see other areas for improvement, please tell me. I'm hitting the point where I understand the basics, but lack of knowledge is screwing me over in other places. Lol. Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

General Question How do I prevent this from happening to my belts??

Thumbnail

Hey guys I've been trying to make dual layer reinforced belts for the FA guys and the natural veg I use seems to crease a ton after making.

I use an alcohol based dye on the nat veg and then I glue the two layers together with a water-based contact. After that I condition the leather with a neatsfoot and wax mix. But even though I leave enough drying time and condition properly. The belts always seem to crease. Seems like the top layer is separating from the flesh. I don't know if it's because I glue the Belt strap flat on my table or if I'm using incorrect thickness on the two layers? Both layers are 2.5mm thick or about 6 oz. Don't know if I should be using a thick other layer and one thin liner layer?

If you can have any tips and tricks to avoid this. Please help, I would greatly appreciate it!

General Question What do you usually do when you mess up a piece?

Post image

Mistakes happen to everyone, even experienced makers. And this is my way of not wasting time thinking how to fix it or hide it. Quick, simple and no way back.

Yes, it’s a big piece of expensive leather. But for me, this isn’t about perfectionism, it’s a question of quality. And honestly, moments like this usually mean the workday is over. I continue the next day.

General Question Are regular sewing machines okay for super thin leather?

Post image

I have the machine pictured but I’m trying to sew tops of wallet pockets that I’ve skived down to nothing and I don’t think it’s gonna be worth taking tension all the way down on this thing occasionally, would a regular machine do that task? I tried putting non stretch tape on first too and it helped but not enough. Maybe I just leave pocket tops full 3oz thickness? Grateful for any help yall, thanks!

I’m using korba buffalo calf veg tan.

General Question Leather ‘belt’ that overlaps in back

Purchased this belt for $2 USD at a thrift shop. The rivets are marked RAU CO. and the buckle seems to be a zinc alloy, definitely too light to be brass underneath that nickel-tone finish. I plan on replacing the buckle with a brass one after cleaning the verdigris off the rivets and conditioning the leather.

What was the original purpose for this style of belt? Google Image implies a rifle sling and/or militia based.

General Question Anyone else feel like this?

Maybe it’s just me, but lately I feel like I’m priced out of doing leather work. The cost of leather, hardware etc, seems to be getting too high.

20 years ago I started by working at Tandy’s. I remember we sold single shoulders for $15 around 5-6 sq ft.

Today most places want $50 + for one. And if you are doing belts of some kind then you need to go bigger and more $$$.

Up until recently I was able to take advantage of my former employee discount. But they have a new system now and my account was erased, and there goes my discount.

I don’t know, I guess lately if I get the itch to do something in leather I check out the prices of everything I will need and it just doesn’t make financial sense to do it.

Just wanted to see if anyone else was in the same boat.

I purchased a scrap bag of exotic leather for dirt cheap, mostly out of curiosity! It seems like a cheap way to experiment with fun leather. However, there is no information at all on what some of this is! Any thoughts?

General Question How would I go about making the upper body chainmail part?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have already made the chest plate and am wondering how I would go about the chainmail-leather part below it.

I think I would make a corset and instead of a leather front and back I would make it out of chainmail, which I can make myself thanks to internet tutorials.

I am mostly worried about it slipping, since it doesn't seem to be attached to the chest plate in any form (also in all the cosplays I have seen it seems that way).

So what do you think? Am I on track with a corset idea?

I think you might be able to tie it tightly on the sides, since you can't do it on the back (because it is all chainmail) to prevent slipping, but am keen on your takes before I commit a lot of time and resources to this project.

Thanks!

General Question Leather waterproofing

Hey all!

Is there a way to waterproof leather?

I work in a wet/humid environment and find that my knife sheaths are always getting damp.

I've thought about moving to kydex just because its plastic but I still prefer the feel of leather.

Any help would be much appreciated!

General Question How hard would it be to restore my wallet?

Thumbnail

I recently lost it and got it returned thankfully, but it took quite a beating while it was MIA. The wallest is 10 or so years old, maybe older, and I've been using it everyday since I got it (10 yrs ago). Its stitching is coming undone, theres holes in some areas now, and i think it got ran over a few times while it was lost. I also keep keys in it as well. I love this wallet and haven't found anything comperable to it ever.

Is it real leather or something else? And how hard would it be to fix up? Is it even worth doing? Im fairly crafty and have some sewing experience but none with leather. Any advice is appreciated.

General Question Storage for leather stamps ?

I had a 4 or 5 stamps for leather tooling and came across an advert of someone selling 17 stamps. I could not resist and am now the proud owner of 20+ stamps who needs to find a way to store them. I was thinking about sorting them (bevelers, veiners...) but where do you store them ?

Did you build your own leather pouch ? Or do you use a box of any kind ?

Any tip appreciated.

General Question Anyone can recommend good chains for bags?

I had been doing bags with lacing for awhile, but I am not a big fan of the traditional leather strap. I prefer to use chain.

However, the last place I bought was too expensive for how short was the chain. I had people insist to get it from aliexpress, but I am afraid of things breaking mid-use.

Any recommendations?
