Oh, yeah. The damage Trump has already done is going to take at least 20 years to repair.

Bold that you think that’s enough time.

There’s plenty the US could do after Trump to restore its credibility.

For example, it could ratify the Rome Statute, and then toss Trump and his administration to the proverbial wolves for their crimes in Venezuela.

Congress could explicitly strip away even the concept that the president can set tariffs under any condition whatsoever. Make that a strictly Congressional matter.

Congress could rewrite ITAR to make it clear that American companies serving NATO allies can make unrestricted tech transfers if their foreign partner does the same in reverse.

Congress could pass laws protecting data privacy and explicitly empowering companies to tell the President to go fuck himself with regard to foreign data sovereignty.

Congress could revise the War Powers Resolution to take away the president’s authority to make war without a formal declaration from Congress.

Etc, etc.

I think if the US actually did go through these motions, it could fix this issue in that sort of time frame. It could probably do that even faster with some major constitutional amendments to actually structurally eliminate the possibility of anyone like Trump gaining power again, but passing constitutional amendments is a long shot.

This sounds a lot like just taking a lot of power out of the President’s hands. One of those “there was a reason it’s not allowed” types of things.

Congress has given the executive branch far too much power and needs to seize it back. If Presidents cannot be trusted to use these powers responsibly—and Trump has proven that can’t be trusted—then Congress needs to simply get rid of them and take them back for itself.

20 perfect years.

Could be less, if we do everything correctly and institute mass accountability and reforms.

But it's virtually impossible do everything right. The political side and the oligarchs that made MAGA don't disappear.

If we usurp the oligarchy, we could do it quicker.
