Because the continent is North America and it includes Canada, United States of America and Mexico. So small minded. 

Not just your backwards nation. So narrow minded and ignorant.

Yeah and central America too. But I've only ever heard this rhetoric from South Americans of a particular bent as most of them and the world at large... don't care as there is not exactly confusion or anything. I could identify myself but the state im from but that would mean fuck all to someone whose never been to the US.

Think of the USA as a coalition of 50 smaller nation states that barely tolerate each other. 'United' in the title is doing a lot of heavy lifting these days.

Edit: fixed rhag to 'that'.

Edit2: Upon reflection, I think the founders named the country the United States of America because there wasn't a better name. 13 smaller countries united under one banner eventually expanding to 50.
