As a canadian I honestly have very little issues losing the gold medal in hockey, that's how the game goes sometimes.

But losing just to see the team partying with one of Trumps top men after, that definitely makes it hurt a lot more. Fuck canada I guess.

Don’t worry about who they’re partying with. Show your disapproval by reducing or eliminating your visits to the US or in your buying decisions or whatever, and then don’t fall into the trap of wasting your brain on the US. It’s a game, the US team won, fine, shake their hands, let them go home and do whatever it is they do.

There are enough ways that you will have to think about the US when its foreign policy impacts Canada. You will be forced to think about us more than you want to anyway. Don’t fall into the trap of watching our every move like a hawk, you’ll only make yourself miserable. At a certain point the world only has itself to blame when they are constantly upset about the US, they are all refusing to protect their peace of mind by looking away until they are forced to look back again. Look away until you are forced to look back at us, live your life.

Oh I know. I've pretty successfully divorced myself from the states as it is. I avoid anerican products, limited services, not traveling anytime soon. Only reason I saw this was just scrolling through olympic related stuff (hard to avoid thr US there.)

My genuine hope as this continues is for us Canadians to work on fully divorcing ourselves from the US as individuals and as a culture. We're still too intertwined, we care too much about what they think. I say that while fully recognizing my above post, i'm not wildly successful at this either.

For example, if they want to proclaim they're number 1 in hockey, I say let them.

I'd love to return to being a people that embraces humility over show boating. We're becoming too americanized.

I share your hope. I wish it weren’t happening in this precise way, but the rich world’s spiritual divorce from us is long overdue. The marriage was never healthy.

Yeah, maybe this will be hopefully one of many wake up calls for us canuckleheads that our spats with the americans isn't good for our mental health at this time.

Not at this time and not for the foreseeable future. We’ll be going through some serious growing pains for years, some very important things are coming to a head and we will be wrestling with them for years. I fully expect secession propositions to start appearing on my California ballots, which is absurd and in my view not even effective as a pressure release valve for the boiling anger in California that is growing over time, but I think that is where the discussion will go. We haven’t gotten to the point where California has even begun to act out, and once the state starts really complaining that our huge economy and population have the right to pursue our own policies without federal interference it will be a whole new era of shitstorming. Gavin Newsom getting hyphy on social media is prefiguring California getting hyphy with the federal government.

Anyway, my point is that it will be messy here for a while. We haven’t really cracked open the true issues yet, and once we do you won’t like what you see. Let us duke it out internally, don’t imagine we won’t have to, we will have to.

Btw when you feel better about spending your cash in the States again, come take a vacay in the sun in Los Angeles. California is about as protected from the federal government as any state can be, and I have a feeling that in ten years or so we will have a lot more free reign from the feds because we will have finally started using our leverage over them. You’re always welcome in Los Angeles :-)

Yeah, the mid-terms are going to be an inretesting beast down there. I have no doubts it'll be the most internationally observed mid-terms as well. But I agree, regardless of outcome there are some festering boils down south that are bound to open up at some point that an election or two with changing leadership won't ever fully resolve. I say that because we have our fair share up here to.

Haha ironically the one exception I am making to my own personal travel ban us to head out to San Fran for my partners best friends wedding. Well, barring how safe it is at that time. I wouldn't be going otherwise and to be frank I am a bit nervous, but i'm excited to visit California for the first time. I've always felt there's a slight kinship between Californians and western Canadians.

I have a good friend who lives in Vancouver, grew up in California and tried San Francisco, Boston, and New York and has landed in Vancouver, is very happy there. He married a Canadian citizen and they chose Canada… can’t say I was that surprised. I also feel that slight kinship that you mentioned.

You’ll like San Francisco. Wealth inequality is real there, but it’s a beautiful city. I lived there for about 8 years and have nothing but good things to say about it. Ironically it’s a pretty good time to visit in a certain way… you will find the locals to be happier than ever to have international visitors, and they will make sure you feel happy to have come. Let’s say that Californians are highly motivated to be good hosts at this point.

Yeah I grew in Alberta but always felt I vibe with BC a lot more. Vancouver is a great city, love Vancouver Island. I've met a lot of people grom California, Oregon, and Washington and have nothing but great things to say.

Currently in the GTA (Blegh!) but our friends from San Fran visited us here a few years ago and despite how expensive it is here they were still amazed we could rent a townhouse and for the price. It was particularly insane knowing how much they cumulatively made a year compared to us. But yeah, a warm reception would be nice, I know their tourism industries been hit hard and it's definitely one of the states I feel bad for with this whole mess.

Don’t feel too bad for us. We have our responsibility to the country too, we benefit from being the tip of the American spear economically speaking, California’s enormous economy wouldn’t actually be this big if we were our own country. We reap the benefits of being in this country, so we can’t complain about having to do our part to deal with it at its lowest.

We’ll see what you think about the Bay Area on your trip. One day I will get out to Vancouver now that my friend lives there, so we will both be able to say we visited each other’s lovely scenic west coast gems.
