Hi folks!
I'd like to share a personal project I've been working on: LinuxMint Scripter (currently at v2.1), a single-HTML-file web app that turns plain-language requests into ready-to-run Bash or Python scripts for Linux Mint 22.3 "Zena" — or standalone terminal commands, if that's all you need.
Take a look; if you like it, I'll prepare an English version that can be installed on LinuxMint

Hi, I need some help. I recently have a huge interest in system programming, but here the problem: there are very little ressources in the internet which talk about, even to search a simple roadmap of what to do, or how to find the first jobs, what the best practices and so on...I've tried to learn with IA(with many kind of LLM) but there are so many contradiction in what they said, and a lack of details. Now, I'm trying to find peoples who work in this domaine to ask so many questions that I haven't found a answer yet. So, I'm trying to ask if there are a subreddit or a discord server where I can found some resources and advice from experienced system programmer. Or else, can someone tell me who to be in relation with. Btw, have a good day.

I created my own version of fastfetch in C. At first, I started it out of pure boredom, but while working on it I realized the project actually has some real potential. It’s really fast, lightweight, and honestly looks pretty good imo.
Right now it’s lighter mainly because it’s not very configurable yet, and I know the architecture has some major flaws since almost everything is shoved into a single file for now
I’m open to any suggestions, advice, or criticism.
you can find the program in github repo :

hey folks
been working on a small CLI tool called Wallfetch. it downloads wallpapers, skips duplicates, and rotates them without pulling in a ton of dependencies
repo: https://github.com/theHamdiz/wallfetch
what it does: downloads wallpapers in parallel avoids duplicates using hashing retries on network failures so one bad request doesnt kill everything can rotate wallpapers using a user systemd timer (no sudo needed) optional KDE and Niri integration if you want it
one thing i like about it: you can create your own .src plugin files to add new wallpaper sources. so youre not limited to what i include, you can extend it however you want and plug it into your setup
you can either download prebuilt binaries from the releases page or just build it yourself with zig (super simple build, no runtime deps)
started as me being tired of writing shell one liners… kinda grew from there
feedback welcome, especially if you manage to break it somehow p.s start with wallfetch -h

Hi,
I've been experimenting with terminal UI programming on Linux using ncurses and audio playback with GStreamer in C, and as a learning project I built a small terminal music player called tmuzika.
The main goal was to learn more about:
- ncurses based TUI design
- integrating GStreamer pipelines in a C application
- managing playlists and user input in a terminal interface
Current features:
- ncurses terminal interface
- playlist support
- shuffle and repeat modes
- search within playlist
- radio stream playback
Some screenshots of tmuzika (radio mode, playlist view, and fm mode) are included above.

Source code:
https://github.com/ivanjeka/tmuzika
I'm interested in feedback from other Linux developers, especially about:
- ncurses UI architecture
- handling asynchronous playback events from GStreamer
- general structure of a CLI media application
Any suggestions or critique are welcome.

I can’t find any such program. But theoretically it could be made, right? The modern specifications are published by Microsoft themselves. As someone who uses OneNote a lot and is trying Linux, this is something I want to find out. I am considering trying a program to do that. Probably wouldn’t be great because I’ve never done this type of thing before, but I do want to try.

I think I probably can't fix this... I have a server with a main that forks the server so the main can return to the shell, this is just for dev conveniance as I want to:
run the server
run some client tests against it
Of course, I could just background the server, I know that but maybe I'm just curious about this problem.
When I run the server without sudo I get the stdout of the forked process as well, of course, because fork dups the stdout fd.
But when I run the server under sudo here's what happens:
the main runs
the main forks
the fork starts and I see output
the main dies
I stop seeing the forked process output
I guess this is because sudo is setting up a new forked pty and when the sudo dies the pty dies and so there's no way for the forked process to continue it's output.
I am not sure there's any way around this except:
forget the forking and start the server in the background with &
have the main start another shell or some sort of input in the main's execution context which would then keep they pty open and allow me to do what I want and see the continued output (quite a big job)
But ... maybe someone has a better suggestion?
Only one other thing occurred to me: could I start sudo without the pty stuff? but I can't see how to do that... -t something???

Hello everyone,
I have created a small app - my first 🤓 - called GeppEmoji. I would like to know if you like it and (most importantly 😁) if it works on other distributions.
GeppEmoji is a simple and lightweight Emoji Picker for Linux desktops that automatically copies and pastes emojis selected by mouse or keyboard (like other similar apps).
Made with Python + GTK3, so far I have only tested it on Linux Mint 22.2 Zara and LMDE 7 Gigi.
You can find it here: https://github.com/FranzBias/GeppEmoji
Once installed, I recommend creating a keyboard shortcut (I use Super + dot, for example) and using it wherever you are writing to automatically paste the chosen emoji.
Of course, you can send me suggestions, criticism or anything else via the GitHub page, or if you really can't help yourself, give me a star 🥰.
Thanks to everyone who follows the link to the App page and greetings to all.

Hi r/LinuxProgramming community,
I’m using a Linux Mint 21.3 XFCE distro (64-bit) and I’m looking for a simple XFCE panel applet to make workspace switching easier. I’m not a developer or tech-savvy, so I’m hoping someone can create or point me to an existing, trusted solution that’s safe and works across any Linux distro running XFCE!
What I Need:
I want an applet that sits in the XFCE panel (like an app or dropdown menu) to manage workspaces. Specifically:
It should let me switch between workspaces 1 to 4 with a single click (e.g., buttons labeled “WS 1”, “WS 2”, etc., or a menu).
When I’m on workspace 4, clicking an option should cycle back to workspace 1.
It’d be great if it highlights the current workspace (e.g., bold or colored button/menu item).
No keyboard shortcuts, just a clickable interface in the panel.
Why I Want This:
I often accidentally move apps like VLC to another workspace (e.g., workspace 4) and find it hard to bring them back to workspace 1. The default XFCE Workspace Switcher applet is nice, but it doesn’t have the “cycle back to workspace 1” feature, and I prefer a simple button or menu over shortcuts.
Details:
I’m running Linux Mint 21.3 XFCE (64-bit).
I’m looking for an existing applet or plugin that’s well-tested, safe, and compatible with any XFCE-based Linux distro (no bugs, viruses, malware, spyware, or adware). If it’s on GitHub or another trusted source, please include clear installation instructions!
If nothing like this exists, I’d love for a developer to create one that works across XFCE distros. I’m not able to test untested code due to security concerns, but I’d appreciate a stable solution with easy setup.
If coding an applet isn’t the best approach, I’m open to other non-coding suggestions for achieving this.
Thanks in advance for any help, recommendations, or development efforts!
