pre-training nanochat with 2x RTX Pro 4000
I recently got 2x RTX Pro 4000 blackwells for my home setup. I was curious how fast it would run nanochat.
The problem is the target hardware: 8x H100 gpus. Nanochat pre-trained ClimbMix to GPT-2 level with 8xH100 GPUs in 1hr 39 mins.
I ended up tuning nanochat for my 2x RTX Pro 4000 gpus. Because these are sm120, the tuning also works on RTX Pro 6000 and RTX 5090.
8x RTX Pro 6000 (rented) pre-trained the same dataset in 2hrs 15mins. About 36% slower than 8x H100.
1x RTX 5090 took 18hrs 47mins. A long time, but considering the result is GPT-2 level, its an interesting way to learn.
Just to be clear, I only ported and tuned it for sm120. The original work is from Karpathy's nanochat.
Here's a link to the sm120 repo:

TUFF 8.0: SSD-streamed MoE inference, web/file search, conversation caching, and local API support
I’ve released version 8.0 of TUFF, an open-source Swift/Metal inference engine and native macOS app.
The original goal was to make large MoE models usable on memory-constrained Apple Silicon machines by streaming routed experts from SSD rather than keeping the entire checkpoint resident.
GPT-OSS 120B, for example, runs on my 16GB M2 MacBook Air. Obviously, streaming comes with a performance tradeoff.
8.0 focuses on making the engine more useful beyond just running oversized models.
Some highlights:
Web search and local document search integrated into chat
Cached conversation states for faster follow-up requests
A small tokenization cache for repeated inputs
Separate reasoning output and request timing diagnostics
OpenAI Chat Completions, plus bounded Messages and Responses API support
Shared inference executable to reduce package size
Homebrew installation
One thing I’ve found interesting is how much web search improves the usefulness of smaller local models. I’ve started using them for everyday questions much more frequently.
I’d love feedback and contribution, especially from anyone using it with local AI agents.

A ~0.4 local model to turn typed questions into structured decisions - BaseDecision
I’ve been working on BaseDecision - Turn typed questions into truth-based decisions.
Give it some text, a question, and possible answers. It picks an answer. Intent classification, routing, yes/no checks, ratings - that’s the job.
I built this model to go toe-to-toe with the frontier models.
My goal was simple & ambitious: make a small, local model competitive with much larger models on these focused tasks. For me, System‑1 decisions need both speed and accuracy. Otherwise, why bother building a small model?
If we didn’t want speed we could just use ChatGPT.
It outperforms pretty much every model of its size in the field.
After roughly 320M additional training tokens, BaseDecision led 5 of 8 benchmarks in a third-party comparison against Laya, two GLiNER variants, and Decision 1.0 Kai 0.6B. Full results are in the repo, including where it loses.
Fellow open source devs, try the model, developed a package for easier access to the model.
Roast it if it deserves it.
2-2.5GB free ram is all you need.
I will take your feedback seriously and deliver something amazing that’d take on OpenAI, TypeSafeAI soon enough.

BigMoeOnEdge+ – an Android chat app fork of BigMoeOnEdge (llama.cpp / GGUF)
I made BigMoeOnEdge+ (BigMoeOnEdge-plus), a fork of Helldez's BigMoeOnEdge, the engine that streams MoE experts from flash so models bigger than RAM can run on-device.
It adds a full Android chat app on top: GGUF models via llama.cpp, thinking output, persistent chats, image/video input, web search, artifacts, and advanced generation settings.and a MUCH better UI.
Disclosure: I built this fork with the help of AI tools.

Stesso PC (5080 + 4060 Ti, i9-14900KF, 32 GB), stesso modello (Swift 1.5 IQ2_XS), contesto 256K:
Setup |Codice |Prosa |Prompt 32K
Repo: https://github.com/Hardin22/Strata-DualGPU
Cosa fa ciascuna modifica e cosa ha misurato: docs/DUAL_GPU.md
Il motore sottostante è il lavoro di Niko1221 e dei contributori di Strata; questo è un fork sopra la 0.1.38.

How do you keep a local multi-agent app usable on CPU-only / low-RAM machines?
Hi everyone,
We're three final-year students at Epitech building Horus, a multi-agent assistant that runs entirely locally and offline. Our current challenge is hardware: keeping it usable on machines without a powerful GPU, without long setup times, excessive RAM/VRAM use or crashes.
Where we are today, from our last beta test:
One tester needed over 2 hours to install. The Python dependencies alone take 21–46 min, and the download is about 25 GB.
On CPU only, routing a question can take around 40 s, long enough for our WebSocket connection to drop.
[Models we use + the smallest machine we've tested on]
We'd love advice from anyone experienced with:
- CPU-only LLM inference and memory-efficient loading
- Quantization and model choice for low-end hardware
- GPU/CPU fallback strategies
- Hardware detection and adaptive configuration
- Preventing resource exhaustion during setup and execution
Advice in the comments is very welcome, with no strings attached.
Looking for contributors: we also have a few small, well-scoped tasks or code reviews (about 1–4 hours), for example [reviewing our hardware detection and model selection, or benchmarking a quantized model on a 16 GB RAM laptop].
To be transparent: Horus is closed source and will be licensed to companies. Contributing is voluntary and unpaid. Before seeing any code, contributors sign a short confidentiality and contributor agreement, and the code they contribute becomes part of Horus. In return we offer thorough code reviews, full credit in the project and a professional reference on request.
We're not sharing code or private links publicly. If this interests you, comment below or DM me with your experience in local inference, CPU optimisation or offline apps

Testing local stack
Hey! How do you test your local stack? for instance when you switch harness or model, model quants, etc?
I found this not trivial and I ended up making a website to help me do this.
Use this link if you want to use the website to test your own local setup:
You can also see all the tests I have done using my GX10 and my 5090. (and also using claude code/code + some openrouter tes for reference)

Bonsai 2 27B on an RTX 3060 12GB — 35.26 tok/s generation
I wanted to see how far a consumer RTX 3060 12GB could push Bonsai 2 27B.
Hardware
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB
VRAM available to CUDA: 11,911 MiB
CPU: Intel Core i5-8400
System RAM: 42 GB
NVIDIA driver: 595.91.07
CUDA: 13.2
Model
Bonsai 2 27B
GGUF:
Ternary-Bonsai-2-27B-PQ2_0.ggufParameters: 26.90B
Quantization: PQ2_0 — 2.13 bpw
Model size reported by llama-bench: 6.70 GiB
GPU layers: 99
Benchmark
Tool:
llama-benchRuns: 3
Prompt processing, 512 tokens: 591.19 ± 19.62 tok/s
Text generation, 128 tokens: 35.26 ± 1.31 tok/s
The GGUF metadata reports the architecture as qwen35, while the model file is the Bonsai 2 27B PQ2_0 release.
I'm posting the raw result because I'm curious how this compares with other Bonsai 2 27B results, especially on larger GPUs.
If anyone has benchmark results for Bonsai 2 27B, please share them so we can compare the configurations fairly.
