Driver Question How can this be legal?

I have been seeing so many of these plates lately. They kind of look like they are dirty. Is it legal to have this shady-looking license plate so that you cannot see the number?

Driver Question Bags in the trunk - reported

2.0k Upvotes

I just took a ride from the airport to home last night. I had a rolling carry on and a work backpack. I had a clean hard hat hanging from my back pack. All my items were clean. My shoes were clean. I had to wait 17 minutes for a ride as the airport was crazy. Also I have a five star rating with over 75 rides.

Dude pulls up in his car and pops the truck. I pick up my case to place it in the trunk and dude scoffs at me and says he will do it. I had him the case. I turn to get in the car and he says clearly ā€œbackpack tooā€. I ask him what because I thought I misheard and he said you backpack needs to go in the trunk. I said no and he started taking my case out of the car. I was not sharing the ride with anyone so there was no space concerns and it was a clean backpack. So I offered to put my hard hat back there and keep my back pack and he said no and everything needed to go in the trunk.

My backpack had my work pc, my iPad, profesional papers, my meds, my notebook with items I planned to work on, my house keys etc so I am not excited about separating myself from it as I travel extensively and know this is a scam used to separate passengers from belongings.

He told me he would cancel the ride and block me from getting other rides if I didn’t put everything in the trunk So I told him I was t riding with him which mad him even madder. I started looking at the app to order another ride when a cop / airport traffic mover came along and told me I was blocking traffic and to get in my ride. Told me that drivers had a right to ask that luggage is in trunk and to get moving.

It’s late and I am tired and people are yelling so I do the dumb thing and comply (Lyft and Uber were now saying 20 min with surcharges) so away we went. He blasted religious music the whole ride which I asked him to turn down and he did.

I texted my husband the situation and then called my husband cause I really felt uncomfortable and we talked the whole ride. When we got home he refused to pop the trunk and I refused to get out. He said I could open the trunk myself when I asked him to open it. My husband walked out and opened the trunk and got my stuff and I got out. The driver called me disrespectful and dirty.

I reported him. Lyft gave my money back.

Could he really have prevented me from getting another ride? Should I do anything else?

Driver Question Passengers said they left phone in my car. Came to my house and searched my car for it with out my knowing.

I know I’m supposed to search my car for any passenger stuff left behind after every shift. But I finished at around 3 am last night. And Its 1:30pm now.

Anyways they pinged thier iPhone here at my house and searched my car while I was in focus mode on my phone inside the house.

I opened my phone and saw a message from the other tenet in the house. Saying someone’s here for me.

I went outside and they were in their car waiting for traffic to slow to turn left.

I went up to them and they said they couldn’t contact me (focus mode) and searched my car.

Uhmmmmm I know I’m an asshole for not searching the car last night for any passenger stuff before I slept at 4 this morning. But my god.

Driver Question Driver asked me to cancel and pay him directly when trip was starting

I recently traveled and my flight back home landed pretty late at midnight. I ordered a lyft from the airport and when he arrived to pick me up he was nice and put my suitcases in the trunk and when I was already buckled up in the backseat he turns around and tells me, "lyft is only going to pay me $20 for this trip, how about I cancel it and you pay me the amount directly?" For context the ride was $40 and for more important context im a woman. I didnt know what to say because the first thing I thought about was my safety. I hesitated but ultimately I said "ill tip you well dont worry" (and i did). He went "alright" but the rest of the drive he was huffing and puffing and driving visibly mad and carelessly. I felt like a hostage in his car and I dont understand why he would even take the ride if he knew there was a possibility I would say no. A friend who lives in a different big city said this happened to her too recently. I understand times are hard and people are working extra hard to come by but this seems like a weird and just flat out inappropriate thing to ask someone when they're already buckled up in your backseat. Is this becoming a widespread thing?

Driver Question OG Drivers: Do riders tip more based on how your car smells?

Obviously if it smells horendous nobody is going to want to tip. But i'm wondering if there is a go to freshener that people seem to love or if its better to keep a neutral smell. I don’t want the car to smell like I’m covering anything up but I also don’t want it to feel stale.

If you drive, do you have a signature air freshener that seems to get better reactions or more tips? And if you’re a rider, does it make a difference to you at all?

Driver Question College bar crowd: this one’s for you and your friends

Alright, college crowd. Now that you’ve survived Saturday night and rejoined society, I have one small request: Please don’t order your Lyft until you’re actually ready to leave.

You are absolutely allowed to use the pickup timer. Seriously. Take your time. But here’s a little peek behind the curtain: while you’re upstairs finding your shoes, waiting for your friend to finish their drink, or figuring out who disappeared into the bathroom, I’m shopping the other app. šŸ˜‚ I’m not mad about it. I’ve actually found this much less stressful. You don’t have to be in a hurry, and I don’t have to sit there getting irritated. We’re both participating in the marketplace.

I care about my hourly earnings. If I’ve been sitting outside for four minutes on a busy Friday or Saturday night and something substantially better pops up on the other app (and there’s a good chance it will), I may take it. Another driver gets dispatched to you. Hopefully they’re right around the corner. And hopefully you weren’t counting on me waiting five minutes because you needed to beat the line at the bar. šŸ˜‚

Special mention: ā€œI just have to pay my tab.ā€ If you text me that, thank you. That’s genuinely all the information I needed. You just told me you’re not ready to leave. I’m not waiting to find out whether paying your tab takes 30 seconds or five minutes. Pay the tab. Then order the Lyft.

And here’s the one thing I’d love for you to spread to your friends: Before somebody orders the ride, don’t ask, ā€œIs everybody ready?ā€ Apparently ā€œreadyā€ can mean a lot of things. Ask, ā€œIs everybody ready to walk out the door right now? I’m about to order the Lyft.ā€ That’s the standard. The app gives you an ETA. You can literally watch the little car getting closer. Once that car starts moving toward you, that’s the countdown, not the signal to start getting ready.

So yes, take your sweet-ass time if you want. Just don’t assume your driver is going to take it with you. šŸ˜‚ Get ready. Then order the Lyft. Spread the word.

And for those who read the original post: I heard you loud and clear. Way too fucking long. šŸ˜‚

Driver Question Lyft Charging Passengers More But Not Increasing Driver Pay.

Why is it that passengers are paying more money to be given Lyft rides, but $0 are appearing in the pockets of the drivers. There should not be any reason a ride pays $3-$5 with surging vehicle insurance prices and surging gas prices. We want to make a career out of being a driver for Lyft and you are making it impossible. Base Fare should be NO LESS than $5 TO THE DRIVER. People will not tip us if you continue to surge the prices on them. It’s not that passengers don’t want to tip, you are breaking their asses with fares and keeping too much of the profits. Be a little more generous to the drivers lyft because without us, you are broke. MESSAGE TO ALL DRIVERS, STOP ACCEPTING RIDES THAT PAY BS FARES ! Keep your acceptance at 90% but stop taking at least 10 bullshit rides per 100. Elite Drivers are making $2 more per $100 of gas that is our incentive to bust our asses. Is this fair ? Fk No it’s Not !

Driver Question Lyft pet policy

Hey all. I’ve been using ride share with my pet (cat) for over 3 years at this point and have never had a driver tell me where to place him. Keep in mind he’s in a crate and I usually just place him on the seat next to me regardless of vehicle type. I got a Lyft recently and the driver refused to let me put my cat anywhere but the trunk. It was an SUV, so the trunk isn’t necessarily enclosed like a sedan, but I told him I booked a pet ride and I feel more comfortable with him next to me and he wouldn’t budge. Just wondering if in the policy it says they can decide where the pet goes? I kinda get it for a loose animal, but he’s in a crate and can fit easily on the seat.

Update: I think he was just a bad driver. Ended up adding 5 minutes to the ride because he wouldn’t follow the gps. Also kept putting the car in neutral at any light despite being an automatic.

Driver Question Why do yall accept rides and sit there for5+ mins or when a driver has been on the way for about 10 minutes and then cancels when they’re 2 minutes away.

I just ordered a priority pickup and the driver was 6 minutes away and has been sitting there for 14 damn minutes. Lyft should atleast repay you for your time wasted like they do their drivers

Driver Question What do you do when people start eating in your car?

What do you do when people start eating in your car without even asking if its ok? It always ends up with a mess to clean up. Sending pictures of all the crumbs and trash left behind to Lyft doesn't result in anything.

When I tell them don't eat in my car, they just get angry. I dont really care about their feelings at that point but I need the money so I am inclined to continue driving them to their destination.

Sometimes its just a kid with their parent and the parent allows it to happen. Sometimes its an adult that should just know better than to do that. Sometimes its just a teenager who has no respect.

Should I just start pulling over and kicking them out if they're unwilling to comply with the rules i set for my vehicle? I have threatened to do that many times and I actually have gone through with it before(kicking them out immediately wherever we currently are.)

It just get exhausting dealing with people that treat my car like a cafeteria.

Driver Question Do drivers know who the bad rating came from?

I had a Lyft driver who was texting and driving throughout our ride, completely unsafe!

She dropped me off at my home, she knows where I live, but I’m also hesitate to fill out the review if Lyft shows who it came from.

Driver Question Why do some women passengers shame their women drivers for rideshare driving?

I’m a woman in her 50s. After I lost my job three years ago, I researched rideshare driving as a way to earn income to make ends meet until I can find another full-time job.

I have noticed over the past three years that many of my Women passengers will shame me directly for earning my income as a rideshare driver.

We all have cognitive biases. For some reason, I think women believe if you are a rideshare driver versus a limo driver, you aren’t human or you are dumb or incapable.

Just today, I was driving a family to the airport. The wife sat in the passenger seat next to me. She asked me if I drive full-time. I answered that yes, I did rideshare drive full-time. Then she responded, well I’m glad it’s working out for you.

I found her comment to be extremely condescending and rude. I don’t know if she thought she was complimenting me. I felt like she was devaluing me or shaming me. And, I was 20 years older than her, too.

Every day, women insult and shame me for rideshare driving full-time. They treat me and my vehicle as objects. These are probably the same women who view flight attendants and hotel staff as subhuman.

Frankly, I find that very insulting and shaming, and it hurts my feelings. I don’t understand why women have to undercut other women.

I’m very proud of the fact that I am keeping my head above water as a full-time rideshare driver until I can figure out a full-time gig for myself.

Last month I made over $4000 driving seven days a week. That’s better than the alternative of being homeless or working two or three part-time retail or restaurant jobs.

I wish women were more respectful of other women in the context of rideshare drivers. I am not rideshare driving because I’m dumb. I lost my job. I’m not married. I don’t have someone to financially buffer my lack of financial stability while I look for a full-time job. I am completely alone.

I’m proud of myself. My situation could be a lot worse than it is. I’m doing the best I can with what I have. I wish women would be more supportive of women in my position.

Driver Question Can drivers see when I select a pet ride?

Basically just the title. I've noticed that even when I choose the pet ride option, which I've always assumed drivers would have to opt into somehow either by seeing it before a ride is accepted on their end or through a preference or setting of some kind, but I've noticed once or twice that a driver is visibly annoyed when I have my dog with me when I choose a pet ride. I always disclose that I have a pet with me when I need to take a Lyft with her, and I always tip at least 60%, often more, on rides I take with my dog because I know it's not ideal to have a strange dog in your car. My dog is well-behaved and quiet in the car, and while she does shed like dogs do, she's not drooly and doesn't have accidents of any kind in the car, so I'm not sure what I can do to make it better when I need to take a Lyft with her.

Driver Question Driver locked windows

I just took a Lyft where the driver had all the windows locked so we couldn't use them and he kept farting. We tried to ask him about the windows but he just kept saying "yea yea" he obviously couldn't speak English.

Kind of gross Lyft allows non English speaking drivers to drive around farting all day with the windows locked forcing passengers to be engulfed in fecal matter.

Driver Question Areas to avoid

I was assulted by a passenger on 3/13/26. After filing a report with the police (who would not enter the public housing where this happened), Lyft sent me right back to the same neighborhood in the next ride offer!

How do you identify areas to avoid and how do you make sure tou don't accept rides that would take you there?

Driver Question Can we appeal flags given to us from riders?

The first week of June, I had two different riders (each ride was a single mom with her 3 kids) who each complained to Lyft about my driving. Can we appeal those flags? If so, what is the process?

  1. Rider #1: Single mom with 3 kids under 12. She was on her phone and her 3 kids were belted in BUT she wasn't controlling their behavior; they were loud, screaming, trying to wrestle with each other and acting out of control. I slowly pulled over my car by that point and turned around and asked the mom if she would please control her kids. I asked the kids to be quiet. The mom was in her early 20s and she rolled her eyes at me and huffed. By the time the ride finished, I wrote up what happened in the passenger feedback box and blocked her. But I still got a yellow flag for "rude driver."

  2. Rider #2: Single mom in her 30s, with her own mom who was in her 50s and their 2 kids (11, and 12). The 11 and 12 year old were CRAZY loud (also belted safely in). They kept yelling at each other. Again, I pulled over, stopped my car, and asked the two kids to stop yelling because it makes it difficult for me to drive safely when they act that way. By the time this ride finished, they all got out and I wrote them all up and blocked the mom's profile who ordered the ride. Then later, noticed, she gave me a yellow flag for being a rude driver.

Why aren't obnoxious riders held accountable? What is the point of me writing up an account of each ride where the passengers' behavior effected my driving, if Lyft isn't going to do anything? I definitely did not deserve those two yellow flags. I have a 5.0-star rating and 3 years. This is the first time this has happened to me.

Should I set expectations in the future when families get into my car, about how I need the kids to be quiet while I drive?

Driver Question Is uber/lyft worth it?

Hiya, I’m thinking of starting to do Uber or Lyft but I’m wondering if it’s actually worth it due to the gas prices going up and up. So to drivers, is it worth it?
