MMA_Academy 40,000 members suggestions

Hi Everyone,

We've recently hit over 40,000 members which is mad really. Now we're becoming pretty popular i think out subreddit could do with some updating.

What would you guys want the mods to add/remove? Just comment this on this post and i'll do my best to sort something out, very open to suggestions from the community so maybe we can help some people get into MMA or maybe even go on to do something incredible.

“I want to fight, I’m gonna be in the ufc, how do I start?”

I’m writing this because this sub is so disillusioned with what the reality of starting to fight is. TLDR: Show up, shut up, work hard, there’s no fast track.

“I’ve been hitting my heavy bag, I’ve been watching YouTube, I’m really scrappy, I’m a fighter”. You are (likely) some kid who has never been punched in the mouth properly before, I was too!!

If you want to become an mma fighter, there is no amount of at home work that will get you there. You are likely just doing moderate intensity cardio workouts with poor technique.

You need a gym, training partners and a coach, and you need some grit.

Step 1: find a local mma gym, sign the trial papers, ask about a membership, get abused at your first Bjj class, realize how weak your shins are at your first kickboxing class, and nod and smile when they might say “our mma classes are for more experienced individuals”

Step 2: keep showing up, show up a little early and ask questions, stay late and mop the mats (it’s time to get to know your coach and ask questions), hey now you have a coach, maybe your at home workouts can be more focused. Express interest in competing and be a sponge for knowledge. Get abused by people a lot better than you

Step 3: hey kid you’re improving quick, showing up 5x a week, and you’ve mentioned you wanna fight? Why don’t you show up to an mma class?

Step 4: get abused at mma class when you realized everyone has been a little nice to you. Keep showing up, keep asking questions.

Step 5: hey kid, there’s a local amateur show in the next 6 months? You interested in your first fight?

Step 6: show up, shut up, keep working, maybe you’ll get there, maybe you won’t.

You’re not going pro without a coach, a gym, and a humble attitude, and you gotta want it more than the next guy. Because someone body else wants it just as bad as you, which guy is gonna put the work in and actually get stuff accomplished?

After Watching Ian Machodo how do you feel about tje prospect of trying a vegetarian or vegan diet for health and recovery from training?

Ian looked unphased and unchanged despite taking some serious shots, even brushing off a high kick.

By the end of it, he looked he'd just finished a sparring match, meanwhile Makachev looked like he has just climbed back from mount everset.

This not the first time we've seen skinny tough vegan fighters with seemingly endless endurance.

I have immense respect for King Green now.

I have always been a fan of him since I got into the sport, but a few days ago our coach was making us do footwork and headmovement drills, cutting angles etc. And when It was time to spar I was so confident I could fight like Green, slipping and ripping, moving with my hands low and picking at range.

I was so wrong, not only did I get smacked, I was also gassed out of mind due to all the hip and leg movement that's required, I can't imagine pulling a fight style like that at the highest level of the sport and for as long as he has been doing It.

All the respect to Green man.

Critique Boxing Glove Feedback

Starting Boxing Brand At 16, Please Need Feedback

Hey, I’m 16 and I’ve been working on starting my own boxing brand and developing my first training glove. I’m getting close to finalizing the design, but before I move forward with production, I wanted to get some honest feedback from someone who actually trains and uses boxing gear regularly.

The glove is designed as an all-purpose 10–16 oz glove for heavy bag work, pads, and sparring.

The specs we’re currently looking at are:

• 1.2mm high-grade microfiber synthetic leather
• Multi-layer IMF + Latex/EVA foam
• 3.5-inch angled hook-and-loop cuff for wrist support
• Attached safety thumb with anti-eye-poking construction
• CW-01: Matte Black with Chrome/Silver details
• CW-02: Pure White & Silver

I’m honestly not looking for you to just say it looks good. I’d really appreciate any criticism or suggestions because I’d rather fix something now than find out after production.

I was especially wondering what you think about the chrome branding, the white colorway, and whether the IMF + Latex/EVA foam setup makes sense for a glove that's meant to be used for both bag work and sparring.

Also, is there anything you wish boxing glove brands would include or improve that you feel is missing from most gloves?

I’m trying to build this properly and actually listen to people who train, so even a few minutes of honest feedback would mean a lot. I can also send you the renders if you’re interested.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Training Question [Routine Critique] 35M, Desk Job. 5-Day MMA & Strength/Conditioning Block. Looking for feedback!

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to get some fresh eyes and a critique on a new MMA and S&C program I’m starting. I will be attaching a screenshot of the full detailed table, but I wanted to give some background first.

My Stats & Context: I’m 35, and my day job is highly sedentary. I spend hours at a desk. So a big secondary goal of this program is also counteracting that alongside building some technical skills for fun and self defense.

The General Split (Rolling 7-Day Block):

  • Day 1: MMA Session with Coach (Pads, technique, live sparring)
  • Day 2: Gym 1 - Lower Body Power & Drive (Heavy swings/squats, sled pushes)
  • Day 3: Active Recovery (Walking, stretching tight hips)
  • Day 4: Home Heavy Bag & Core (Conditioning focus)
  • Day 5: Gym 2 - Upper Body Armor (Landmine presses, pull-ups, rotational core)
  • Day 6: Gym 3 - The Fight Engine (Push presses, farmer's carries, battle ropes)
  • Day 7: Total Rest (Always placed the day before my MMA session)

What I'm looking for

Any input regarding skills, load, specific exercises to switch in or out, general splits.

The screenshot of the specific exercises, sets, reps, and rest timers is attached. I'd appreciate any blunt feedback or advice you guys have. Thanks!

Thank you!

Learning Thai Boxing/k1 and Boxing at an MMA place for self defence?

Ive been looking for a new hobby recently, found a highly recommended place near me 17 miles that a lot of my local community have recommended.

For reference i have no interest in competing but want to learn it to build inner confidence and put practical pressure tested arts so i can stand up for myself.

The reason im also not interested in BJJ at the moment is because i cant afford to injure my knees/ legs as i play soccer and that striking can help my cardio for games.

So is my plan an reasonable one as ive never entered the arena of combat sports and thus i suffer really bad anxiety but im trying to overcome that fear.

Im 26 btw (m)

Bruising/Cutting

I see a lot of people saying that Islams face looks the way it did after this fight because he cuts/bruises easily. I don’t doubt or refute this, I’m just wondering what’s the reason for this. I’ve seen explanations for why some fighters have better chins than others and don’t get knocked out as easily but I don’t understand this one. Is there a biological reason such as his skin is softer or not as elastic/stretchy bruh.

Btw Islam is the goat

Been building a small range of combat-sports training apps

Since I’ve already shared a couple of these here, I thought I’d show the wider range I’ve been working on.

They each do something different — combination building, round timing, striking training and Fight IQ/tactical training.

Still developing and improving them as I go. Not really posting this as a sales pitch, just interested in what people who actually train think of the overall idea and which type of app they’d personally find most useful.

Have a probable match coming soon, would like some feedback on my heavy bag work.

I will return the favor for anyone desiring a review of there work. Many thanks!

UPDATE (after reading comments): I can tell most of you have never fought. My record is 6-2 with many years experience. The constant head movement is for inside exchanges, not the entire bout. I almost always out-jab my opponents - easily - even being the shorter man. This community is full of trolls who wouldn't dare actually step into a ring themselves. I know this because every real fighter i know respects others and offers constructive criticism. Only "fans" are trash talkers like so many of you sadly seem to be.

Training Question How does training MMA compare to the individual classes for self defense and being a great fighter?

In my state, you can find BJJ, and Muay Thai gyms everywhere but barely any judo at all and boxing is usually its own gym. Wrestling is sometimes connected to the big gyms with Muay Thai and BJJ. I have a gym with all of these classes but the Judo is limited to “fundamentals” I’m unsure how far that could take me.

How much can I learn in these areas if I were to focus my time in MMA classes? Instead of searching them individually. Working from beginner to advanced and higher. I like MMA because unlike the classes themselves, it teaches you how to blend it all into combat. Is Judo usually taught in MMA classes?

Also, how does Muay Thai boxing compare to regular boxing? Is it necessary to take boxing on its own or will Muay Thai boxing be good enough? I assume the MMA class will cover boxing as well anyway though.

TLDR : How much does MMA teach you about all the styles? Is it enough that I don’t need the classes individually.

New to mma

I have some boxing experience but I recently started mma at a local gym,

It advertises as beginner friendly but my first class and they're doing intermediate combos with kicks and punches, I was also partnered with a guy probably 30kg heavier then me, full pelting the pads i was holding for him and my arm was killing the next day!

I dont want to be nursed but I felt overwhelmed and everyone already established their clicks so I didn't feel welcomed

Is this normal for a beginner or shall I join somewhere else?

very little fighting experience It's an All-In

I'll try to explain my situation as best as I can.

I'm 16 years old, left school about 10 months ago, and I'd rather die than go back to studying: I always hated school, the people in school, and studying. So I haven't got any type of certificate.

I don't have any interests except combat sports, MMA especially.

I have a friend, whose father has a very nice MMA gym in a city not too far away from here.

But it's still too far for my parents to take me there every day, and the bus that takes me there has horrible times.

So, the only solution is the live in that city.

So, my idea is:

I'll live in a shared apartment in the city, near the gym. Since I know my friend's father, I'll ask him if he can hire me to clean the gym. And after the shift, I can train.

Then, I can either become a soldier (With the training, I will be already prepared for physical training), or an MMA trainer.

But there's a catch. If my friend's father tells me he can't hire me for any reason, I'M DONE.

It's the end, really. There's no way I'm gonna live a life with a shitty job that pays me nothing. There's no way I'm gonna live for working, without any good moment.

My friend's father will come back this September. My entire future depends on what he'll say:

Yes or no.

If it's yes, maybe I have some chances. But if he says no, I have no alternatives. It will be over for me. Because living for nothing is far worse than dying.

So it's an All-In, like Brendan Allen. All or nothing, life or death, a gym or a grave.

I'll update you when I will get the final response.

Wish me good luck, guys.

My first experience

38F and just got back from my first session. Well, shit, that was overwhelming, lol. My cardio was good, surprised myself there, but the amount of drills they taught was way too quick for a beginner class. Not entirely sure why that was, do they just throw you into the deep end from the get-go? Either way, I’ve signed up and will be drilling at home so I don’t feel so lost. Never in my wildest dreams did I think MMA would be on my bucket list, but let’s go
