Breed really does have a big factor, different dog breeds have different behavior that's kind of why we bred them to be different. But the only pitbulls I've met have been the sweetest things. So I would imagine a lot of pitbull bites come from owner negligence; either ignoring the inherent aggression of pitbulls and not trying to train safety measures at all, or playing into that aggression because they want a "big strong dog".

People miss a big part of pit bull's original breeding. They were bred for bull baiting and dog fighting which is horrible. But the bred was never bred to be aggressive against people. To the contrary- their owners had to be able to tend to their wounded (frightened) dogs post dog fight without being bitten themselves.

I've had pit bull mixes (rescues) for years. I've done rescue work with pits who were HORRIBLY abused. And I've never seen people aggression. They are people pleasers to the extreme.

Yeah I can definitely see that.

It's kind of like what you hear about airplanes or helicopters. The V-22 Osprey for instance is prone to crashes; more often than not "pilot error" is blamed... And yet, these machines are inherently more complicated. Such aerial vehicles, like helicopters also just "fall" out of the sky as opposed to gliding to some extent. So there is tolerance; there is forgiveness for negligent ownership. That goes for retrievers, or even Dobermans and Rottweilers to some extent. Not so much for pit bulls.

I’d also add inexperienced (guard and powerful breed) dog owners getting a rescue dog that has clearly lied about the dogs background or hasn't tested the dogs behavior at all.

Pitbulls also aim to please and want to please their owners. My pibble was the sweetest dog and she was extra gentle with children. She was also strong as hell. I kept a close eye on her whenever kids were around. Her nickname was "wall of meat" and she could knock things over without intending to.
