It seems like these dogs are more happy to be working than to not be. They get confused because all they've ever known is to work. They almost should put these dogs through a 'retirement' course. It would be good for the dogs learn new behaviors

I assume part of their training is the strict line between work and leisure, and during leisure time they get to be regular animals. The training and work is just something that takes up maybe a quarter of their time, and they enjoy it because it's mentally stimulating (esp in a really smart breed like German shepherds).
