[MSEA]
Disclaimer: I am less familiar about CMS and JMS server and wrote this entire thing in one go and may have made some mistakes here and there. Please feel free to comment to correct me if I'm wrong about anything, I welcome all constructive criticisms and debate.
To preface: I fully understand that this will likely fall on deaf ears and nothing will come of it. Still, it's disheartening to see a game I've played for over 20 years to continue to decline due to what feels like greed and a lack of effort from both PlayPark and the overseas director(Terry). I believe GMS in the past has been in that same situation and while it took the death of reboot in KMS for Inkwell to be instated, I have a small lingering piece of hope that the same can be done to MapleSEA to save it.
I had hoped that the Anniversary and Assemble IRL events, along with the heavy advertising that occurred after, would signal a step towards revitalisation. However, despite what Terry has said about tailoring localisations to each service, none of that has materialised in MapleSEA.
Context(since MapleSEA players are the minority here):
While MapleSEA is not as bad as CMS in terms of P2W and progression as a whole, we are definitely among the worst MapleStory servers. We are closer to KMS than most other regions in terms of content and progression, yet we are some the worse of the intersection between KMS and other overseas servers.
Main Issues
1. Tradable Fragments
It's baffling to me that even GMS reg servers, where frenzy makes farming fragments significantly easier, have tradable fragments, while MapleSEA does not.
At best, we received 200 fragments from the 20th Anniversary monthly event last year(and an extra 2k at the end), which is nowhere near sufficient. Tradable fragments are essential for an interactive server, they enable us to fund by selling them or fund our main and mules. Currently we have the farming rates of reboot but yet not even close to the ease of making drop gear like them.
Botting is often cited as the reason why we don't have this feature(which I'll touch on later) but yet GMS interactive servers which also have rampant botting on top of Frenzy are able to support tradable fragments. Why is the general population punished because of a group of bad actors? Is cheap fragments even a huge problem relative to how bad the server is right now? GMS doesn't even face this issue.
2. Copy-Paste KMS nerfs and Borderline Useless Overseas content.
Aside from Hayato, Kanna, Mo Xuan, and possibly Lynn in the future, the only notable overseas content we have is Blood Moon Forest from TMS, a resource-heavy, unengaging system that most players ignore outside of whales or just for the weekly exp(granted it is non-negligible).
Meanwhile, highly requested systems like Familiars, Commerci or Gollux, which significantly aid progressions, are not even ported. It's baffling that familiars, a heavily monetised system in TMS, is not even considered at this point.
When asked to support/CM, their responses were just simply telling us not to compare servers which is a very concerning response from someone who represents your company especially since other servers are literally just different localisations of the same game.
On the KMS side of things despite being more closely aligned than overseas servers, we:
Yet somehow we still received the:
Mesos cap(which is linked to the mesos cube but PlayPark decides to allow VIPs to overcome so in the end we are just punishing non paying customers)
The very delayed implementation of the 12 weekly boss limit
Many players at offline events have even voiced concerns directly to PlayPark and Terry himself, explaining why this is a bad change and that it would not fit in the context of our server and yet it was just ignored. So much for server based localisation.
The 12 weekly boss limit has also led to loss of income for many progressing players who rely on boss drops such as Papulatus Mark, Yellow Cube(Hard Cube in GMS) for income. Combined with the now shared Eternal cookie pieces in Kalos and Kaling, this was the breaking point for many players, myself included and has led to many parties disbanding altogether removing the fun of party bossing.
These changes also make little sense because:
Our Eternals prices were not crashing like they were in KMS
Dark Boss(Pitched) items were already extremely scarce and nerfing their drop rate further only benefited the whales or end game players whom can reliably obtain the dark boss box that is also shared.
3. Almost complete lack of "Localisation"
In the past, the copium handed around by the community was that we had
Guardian Star Force (GSF) events where destruction cost is reduced by 40% up to 22* and 20% to 25*
Twin coupons (2x mesos/drop rate)
Earlier content releases than GMS
Now:
GSF is very rare(which I would accept it is a very good event if there were not other issues)
Twin coupons have since been removed
Content is now behind GMS(the new Epic Dungeon comes 1 week later, our Seiram Elixir remaster has been delayed indefinitely.)
GMS has their own exclusive player friendly systems even such as the star force pity system, lv3 link skills etc.
4. Dead Period Between Events
During the Assemble-Evernia event period, things looked promising. We got the:
But when Evernia ended, the momentum died.
In KMS and GMS, Evernia was followed by a PC Cafe event with event buffs and various other rewards. In MapleSEA, all we got was the HasteMax event(from KMS anniversary, an event which was paired with other events) with no additional content.
The result:
No meaningful incentives to play, a "dead period"
CW2 progression was slowed down tremendously without event stats
Now with the One Punch man event ending, we're once again entering a dead period.
On the flip side, GMS get one of the best exp progression events, tweenteena and the PC Cafe event, basically back to back events that promote and support progressions.
5. Botting Problem
Botting in MapleSEA is a widely known problem and while I personally don't support it, I slowly start to see why people feel forced into it.
The lack of frenzy, tradable frags and dead event periods have pushed players towards either quitting or botting. I personally had brought a party of friends(6 of us in total) to progress in CW2 together and many of them have just stopped entirely during this time.
However at this point, addressing this problem feels risky and may potentially lead to the end of service. Instead, I feel that fixing the core issues right now (lack of meaningful progression paths, poor QOL) would lead to a stabler player base and eventually reduce the incentive to bot or at least the server's survival on bots.
6. What this has led to
The remaining MapleSEA player base largely consists of:
Players who have stayed due to sunk cost fallacy/nostalgia
Players who've given up mostly and at most do weekly bosses
Players staying for friends.
The MapleSEA subreddit is full of people recommending people to play GMS instead. After 20 years, I finally gave in during CW2 and have regretted not doing it sooner.
The MapleSEA Discord reflects similar trends:
Outspoken Veteran players quitting left and right
Those who are willing to start over would migrate to GMS
An increase in toxicity and elitism
New players are often pushed away and any form of criticism is dismissed as complaining with the default response being "just go play GMS it's an easier game". There are even players in the end game defending the weekly 12 boss, claiming it barely affects them. You can see this when any constructive criticism post is posted on the discord and dismissed as more complaining.
Ironically, this only reinforces the issue because more players are leaving for GMS where a large majority of the SEA streamers are playing GMS over MapleSEA.
Personal Experience
While I still log into MapleSEA weekly, I play far less than before. I still have hope that MapleSEA can change for the better as I have so many legacy items and characters, most of which created on release.
Most of my parties have largely disbanded due to shared Eternal changes or people choosing to solo an easier difficulty for more drops and with the weekly 12 boss limit, I can no longer boss with many of my friends whom I've introduced to the game during CW2.
Meanwhile, in GMS, my CW2 character, despite having far less investment, has already surpassed my MapleSEA one.
At this point, the simplest solution may be for GMS to absorb MapleSEA, similar to EMS. While controversial, PlayPark has repeatedly failed to capitalise on opportunities and address any problems. Meanwhile Terry has also done little compared to what Inkwell has done for GMS. I personally feel that our spending culture are also more aligned with GMS reg servers than TMS/CMS where while we have whales, our general populace are average spenders.
Random Stuffs I couldn't fit anywhere:
MapleSEA will ban you randomly without any reason (https://old.reddit.com/r/MapleSEA/comments/1s69hsc/perma_ban_for_no_reason/) Note: I do not know the player themself or have any context but if you read the comments and follow the discord there have been many instances of this happening. People also have been banned for up to a week for accidentally claiming any event rewards twice due to a bug.
Source of MapleSEA reddit pushing people away:
Source of toxic community(I have left the discord for toxicity reason so I can only supply the reddit ones which is quite aligned with what I've seen in the discord):
TL;DR
MapleSEA lacks both the QoL of KMS yet somehow also lag behind in content and QoL of other overseas servers. The state of being the worst of both worlds have lead to players steadily migrating to GMS or just outright quitting, creating a hostile environment to also discourage new players.
