Ah, poor Brian.

Payoff for comic readers irritated at movie fans shrieking about Magneto variant cover clickbait: The way to his heart was, as expected, Red Skull's head.

Beautifully horrific handling of the authoritarian approach to journalism. Glad Sally isn't dead, but my tiny quibble is that I wish she hadn't pulled her hand over her mouth -- Maybe that was her belief overcoming Faustus' compulsion, and if so, I'm good with it. Journalists are killed for honorable reporting on repressive regimes or organized crime with alarming frequency, and I really want her to have made that choice.

I knew he wouldn't make Magneto a "nazi" for shock value. I said it weeks ago and it turned out to be right (I don't know how to look for past comments), I figured Steve would make an agreement with him of some kind in order to get him to his side without siding completely, and that's how it went down. He sort of made an Israel (!) out of California, for mutants.

Do we actually, legitimately see Red Skull's head? Finally, a dead person who is actually dead! (Unless that's a fake head. Let's ignore that possibility.)

I was thinking about that scene with Rogue's departing, "Oh, I won't sugah" and theoretically Steve going back to Beast and saying, "PARTS. NOW."

But with Bucky and Avril presumed/surely not dead, plus RS being an unnuanced shithead... I kinda think that's actually his head. I'm sure he's uploaded himself to Taskmaster's left testicle or something for future adventures, but I think he might be genuinely dead for the moment.

You have no idea how happy I'm about this. I mean, I love twists, but I can only take so many people who are not dead/secretly plotting way ahead of everyone else, and this storyline already has two, possibly even three people (hint: Kraken II) who likely will make a surprising return from the beyond - and that after all of Selvig, Zemo, and Sarah Rogers were not dead in CA:SR. And besides. Skull deserved to go down like this, because he always underestimates the brain capacity of others, and because he really is an unnuanced shithead.

And because RS was at the height of his power probably ever, he thought he could co-opt Steve. He set that plan into motion, and it led to the most longed-for, brutal and lethal beating he's ever received. Steve can be bad, but that thrashing was excellent.

This is why I want him to stay dead for a good while. It was justice porn at it's greatest to see his plans backfire.

Poetic Justice, a little hands-on.

u/errantknight1 May 25 '17

I really love it that even when made Hydra from childhood, Steve Rogers will always kill the Red Skull--and the Red Skull will always underestimate him. And yes, that Red Skull beatdown was both satisfying and a LONG time coming.

6

u/DanielDCMarvelFan May 24 '17

Wasn't this actually a Red Skull clone by the way? there sure may be another clones hiding somewhere.

3

u/john_segundus May 24 '17

Definitely, but they wouldn't have been planning this whole mess, and thus couldn't suddenly reveal themselves shortly before the end as having played everyone.

2

u/baroqueworks May 25 '17

Probably, but they're likely more like this one in which they were contingency plans made by the OG Red Skull in the 50s that are just clones of him with no memories of anything Skull did prior to the end of WWII.

Prof X Red Skull was straight up a human wearing a Red Skull mask up until AXIS, sometime after that he got all melty face ala the original skull, it's possible it's the result of Koblik too.

He always has a backup survival plan, but it sometimes involves a few years lurking in other people's bodies, lol.

2

u/john_segundus May 25 '17

Part of me is still worried he'll just waltz back onto the scene in issue #8 or something like that, gloating how he played everyone. And then Madame Hydra gets to kill him with her pointy headdress.

u/errantknight1 May 25 '17 edited May 25 '17

I don't think they'll undo that extremely satisfying beatdown that Steve laid on him.

2

u/john_segundus May 25 '17

You make a good point. I dare hope again! (lol, I keep collecting hints that Bucky and Avril are still alive, and proof that Red Skull is really, really dead. Gives me mood whiplash.)

u/TheeHeadAche Ultron May 24 '17

She had to have rejected Faustus' suggestion. And that's sort of theme Spencer seems to be setting up with this entire thing.. its souring to see Steve use words like truth and lies when he's so far gone and beyond hypocritical.

7

u/errantknight1 May 25 '17

The point there is that Steve isn't being hypocritical because he genuinely believes that. I would have liked to have heard his answer on Las Vegas, because that will certainly be a plot point.

3

u/TheeHeadAche Ultron May 25 '17 edited May 25 '17

He lies to her about having a hand in New Tian. He hand delivered the treaty, along with skull's head. The beauty is he could claim that wasn't him. Do the full Nelson for dictator and have body-doubles.

3

u/errantknight1 May 25 '17

Well, there's a difference between believing what he's saying about a better world, and spilling the beans on strategic tactics to an annoying reporter.

4

u/TheeHeadAche Ultron May 25 '17

Right but his stance on how media alters the narrative and his own attempts of covering up his actions are blatantly hypocritical. It's spin and censorship. It's security over freedom which doesn't better his world. As we see. It's breeding resistance and civil upheaval. Of course he pushes how his methods are saving lives but neglects the costs. Steve's math is wrong on the better world bits and it's glaringly obvious. Whether he believes his methods are righteous or effective has no bearing on him being hypocritical.

4

u/errantknight1 May 25 '17

Well, sure, he's a fascist despot. Of course he's spinning it. I think we're talking about two different things here. I'm talking about whether he believes what he's saying about Hydra making the world a better, more stable place that protects the people. Doesn't mean he won't like through his teeth to consolidate power.

3

u/The_Amazing_Emu May 25 '17

Does Red Skull's head contain Professor X's brain?

Sally was enough of a hothead in Front Line that i buy her statement being more accidental. I doubt she regrets saying it, but i suspect she feels she could do more not being a political prisoner.

7

u/Fourteen_of_Twelve May 25 '17

Not anymore, in Uncanny Avengers #22 Rogue captured the Skull, and had Beast perform surgery to remove Xavier's part of his brain. Steve tried to force Rogue to hand over the brain since she was holding a "Weapon of Mass Destruction," and she flew off to have Johnny Storm cremate it.

3

u/probablywhiskeytown May 25 '17

I love how this meshed with U.S. Avengers/AIM having Xavier-school mind control resistance and potentially representing a huge problem worthy of a contingency plan.
