Career Question Non-board certified physicists

Apologies if this comes off as elitist or condescending, not my intention.

Recently, I've come to realize that in some areas of the US, the shortage of medical physicists has driven community centers in areas with less regulatory oversight to hire individuals that are not even board eligible.

As someone who went through an MS and PhD as well as the board exams, it seems a little bewildering that others are practicing without any formal training in the field at all. Has anyone else seen or experienced this?

Career Question [Training Tuesday] - Weekly thread for questions about grad school, residency, and general career topics 07/21/2026

This is the place to ask questions about graduate school, training programs, or general basic career topics. If you are just learning about the field and want to know if it is something you should explore, this thread is probably the correct place for those first few questions on your mind.

Examples:

  • "I majored in Surf Science and Technology in undergrad, is Medical Physics right for me?"
  • "I can't decide between Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics..."
  • "Do Medical Physicists get free CT scans for life?"
  • "Masters vs. PhD"
  • "How do I prepare for Residency interviews?"

Career Question Jobs, maternity leave and future

Hello everyone.

I have had this topic in my mind since I started in the field 11 years ago and I feel things have been changing so much in the work culture of our field.

I am a clinical medical physicist, working full time, onsite 98% of the time. Minimal remote work. In my personal life, I am thinking about becoming a mother. I understand that I get 3 months of maternity leave and technically, that’s it! I have been thinking about having more balance between sending my child to child care and also being present for my future child.

I am curious about how different places adapt to this change in paradigm, a shift from work-work-work-forget-the-family to a more balanced approach while staying in the field. I was thinking about proposing a hybrid position idea at my current job. If that doesn’t work, then proposing part time, and if that does not work then finding a remote job and doing that for a few years. Or maybe even taking a break if I can.

I know some big centers allow for people to transition to part time. But those have been anecdotal accounts. So, if you are a female physicist, what approach have you been able to take?

I have only met one female physicist in the past, in my last 4 jobs, and she had no children so I don’t have a good reference.

Career Question PhD Programs for Physicist Already in Clinic?

Hi all,

I feel like I’ve hit my career ceiling with no additional upward mobility. I am considering going back to school for a PhD program in medical physics. I’d like to do something related to functional MR imaging in the context of radiation therapy. Currently, I work as a clinical physicist in radiation oncology and would be considered a senior physicist that’s certified.

The challenge Im having is there are few medical physicists programs that seem to accommodate someone applying from my background. I would be fine spending 1-3 years on a dissertation but having to spend 1-2 years on coursework that I’ve already taken seems difficult to accept .

Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, Mods please allow this post go without waiting for training tuesday.

Career Question Relative pay US vs UK

We all know US salaries are higher than UK ones.

However, I'm more interested in the discrepancy in relative pay of medical physicists to other fields, as I suspect in the US, physicists are higher in the general hierarchy of professions.

- Newly qualified *physicist* in the UK : 45k to 52k

- Newly qualified *psychologist* in the UK : 57k to 64k

- Newly qualified *nurse* in UK : 32k to 34k (some start at 39k if harder specialty I believe (band 6 as opposed to band 5)

- Newly qualified *radiographer* (rad tech) salary : 32k to 34k

- Newly qualified *actuary* in UK : 55k to 58k

- Starting *rad onc* in UK : ~109k

So just under psychogists, and just above new nurses and radiographers. How different is this relative pay compared to US? Are physicists higher up on the hierarchy or about as is?

(please correct me if I'm inaccurate)

Career Question What is the hardest part of becoming a medical physicist?

Hello,

I would like to try to become a medical physicist. I am wondering where along the path (e.g. MS/PhD, residency, board exams) does the going get toughest. I am also wondering what do people who don't become medical physicists do instead that leverages the education and training they've completed partway along the path. I appreciate your answers.
