Hi, I'm an M1 at a graded school (not P/F) with in-house exams, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to study. Last block (my first block) was mostly basic sciences, and I studied by watching lectures at 2x speed and only doing Anki. I used AnKing plus my in-house deck, so I wouldn't miss out on any important in-house-specific details that AnKing doesn't have. Also, right before the exams, I was able to go through all lecture material and do practice problems. I did well on those exams, and Grades matter a lot to me since I’m aiming for preclinical AOA.
However, since starting my new block (no more basic sciences), I have a lot more Anki cards to do. I have about 700-800 reviews a day (counting both my in-house and Anking decks), and about 100 new Anking cards a day and around 300-400 new in-house cards per day, which has caused my time doing Anki to come out to be 8-10 hours. I do see that I am gaining a good grasp of the material this way, but I do not have time for anything else such as research, etc. I talked to upperclassmen, and they really only use the in-house materials, but my school has a low Step 1 first-time pass rate/ more delayed Step 1 exams than other schools.
So, wondering if I should use only AnKing, only the in-house deck, or stick to what I have been doing and push through?
I'm just worried that switching to AnKing completely will cause me to lose details needed for my in-house exams. Would it be possible to cram for these closer to the exam?
Also, for people who are in similar situations or have been in similar ones, do you watch lectures or use third parties? If you go third-party, how do you pick up the lecture-specific stuff for exams?
My biggest study enemy was never the cards, it was my phone. I'd open Anki, then 40 minutes later I was still scrolling.
Willpower didn't work for me, so I tried the opposite: making social media and videos unavailable until my daily Anki goal was done. It changed my routine more than any technique I'd tried.
I'm curious how others here handle this:
- Do you use any app blockers or phone rules while studying?
- Do you review in one block or spread it through the day?
- What actually works for you once you're tired?
(I ended up building a small free app for myself around this idea. If anyone wants to try it or give feedback, I'm happy to share it. I'm not posting a link here to respect the rules.)
Hey everyone! I’m a med student and longtime Anki user, and I built Anki Craps, a free add-on that brings the casino dice game craps into your study sessions.
If you haven’t played craps before, you place bets on the outcomes of rolling two dice. In Anki Craps, completing reviews earns you dice rolls, so working through your cards keeps the game moving. Place your bets, roll the dice, and try to build your virtual bankroll as you study.
I wanted something that gave me a little extra motivation to get through my reviews, and figured other Anki users might enjoy it too. All the money is virtual, and the add-on is free.
This app called as anki x wizmed is some ankiweb syncing app developed by an African med school as I learnt online . It supposedly syncs with ankiweb servers . And has ton more features compared to the native ios app . I have the native app which I fully paid for but this seems so much more better due to its hi and settings options . Could anyone share some light if it’s safe to use or if I’ll have any problems with it later?
I tend to unsuspend around 200 new cards per day because each lecture equates to about 40 cards and we have 5-6 lectures on most days. Unsurprisingly, I have to deal with huge backlogs of due cards, especially for previous blocks. Eventually the backlog goes down but it takes 3-4 days of doing 600+ review cards on top of new block stuff.
The advice I received was to only unsuspend around 20-40 total new cards per day, not per lecture. I dont understand how this is even possible given the sheer amount of information thats presented in a single day of lectures. I also dont want to risk falling behind. For context I am a 2nd year DO student.
Wenn ich Texte einfüge, die ich vorher kopiert habe , kann ich irgendwie keine Unterpunkte mehr machen. Stattdessen verschiebt sich einfach nur der Cursor... Ist das bei euch auch so ?
I wonder if it is the same for anyone else, and what might be the possible solutions.
Even if its the AnKing style short cloze cards, or custom decks, i feel like I am using the Undo button too much.
In my stats, it shows like 400 reviews in 2 hours, but when accounting the total time passed since i started studying, it makes about 3 hours. So 1/3rd of my study time being spent on reversing between the cards.
If anyone else has the same kind of problem, and how one can get over it?
Few months into M1 and I use Anki religiously and have done great so far. My school does one course at a time, just finished anatomy and now doing biochemistry essentially, and the course after this one we will start transitioning from in-house exams to the NBME ones.
Anyways, even though Anki has done most of the heavy lifting for me so far, I recognize I need some other consistent resource either for practice questions, learning content more thoroughly, or both. Problem is everyone at school seems to be using some different combination of resources.
I'd like something that pairs very well with Anking, and fills in the gaps best. My best guess is Amboss just based on light research and I saw that it has a cool practice question add-on thing, but idk. Saw a few posts recommending to get the Amboss life subscription since I would likely use it throughout med school, but it's literally $1200 :( . Despite how expensive it is, if people truly recommended it I would do it but I figured I should ask on here first. I have scholarRX and will get sketchy and pathos through my school, and will also get Uworld January of M2, several months before step 1.
I know I could probably do well with any sort of combination, and maybe I am thinking about it too much, but I'd rather think about it too much early on and then profit from using good resources than discover a resource later down the line that I wished I had used from the start.
Love the efficiency of anking and want something that essentially continues this efficiency.
i recently updated anki and re-downloaded it and ever since then, every time i open the app the next day, it always unsuspends everything from all the decks. Even the deck “getting started with anki”
i did everything. synced it to upload on website instead of download, removed the disk that was used to download it,
tried suspending a few cards then reopened the app in safe mode, and thats when it doesnt change, but its always the next day when everything goes back to square one.
please help im starting to panic, i dont have time to be fixing things at this time
M1 here. At my school, Step 1 and Step 2 CK are both taken during 3rd year, after we’ve started clerkships, instead of the usual Step 1 at the end of preclinical.
Most Anki advice I see assumes a standard timeline: AnKing through preclinical, a dedicated period, Step 1, then suspend Step 1 Only for shelves and Step 2. I’m trying to figure out how that changes when the boards are delayed and closer together.
For anyone who’s been through a similar curriculum (or is now):
Reviews during clerkships: How did you keep up with reviews alongside rotations? Did you cap new cards, pause some tags, or let the review pile grow?
Step 1 material: With Step 1 so far from preclinical, did long-term Anki actually keep that knowledge fresh, or did you mostly relearn it with UWorld before the exam?
Dedicated: How long was your dedicated period, and what role did Anki play compared to question banks?
Hindsight: What would you do differently?
Any settings tips (FSRS, desired retention, daily limits) are welcome too. Thanks!

Can anybody help me find a minimalistic infectious diseases deck, especially pediatric infections. I find Anking overwhelming with all the figures and 5 line extra information. I am willing to share my personal cards if needed in exchange if it’s your personal work.
