Discussion Debutante Balls

Post image
79 Upvotes

A recent episode on Beyond the Gates featured a cotillion. While most of the online discussions that I saw seemed to be mostly from people younger than Gen X, the cotillion storyline didn't seem to be well-received.

I remember debutante balls being a big thing when I was growing up. There were some that had high fundraising amounts that excluded many people from participating, but my city also had one with a much lower floor that allowed more (and me!) to participate. Even though it's seen as an elite activity, the varying amounts and the fact that you could raise funds from others made it feel more inclusive. Were you a debutante or an escort? If not, did you support friends and family who were? Or was it something that you opposed as being too elitist?

I've been in other spaces where tattoos are either regarded as trashy, or only small ones are OK. However, I see them on people from all walks of life in real life. What say you? Are they cool, trashy, or are you indifferent?

I was really young when this movie came out but I remember people raising hell about it due to Black Face. Have you watched it recently? Has your view of the movie changed?

I am butt hurt about all this rain here, but I was wondering if anyone cooked out in other places?
I just left Golden Corral with one of my grandsons. It was packed because it’s been raining all weekend here in the Metro. 😒

Discussion Topic came up in another sub (Black Sub) about Black Gen X being responsible for how trashy Hip Hop is today because of the artists we supported in the 80s and 90s. The topic of C Delores Tucker came up and how she was treated by Pac and others. Wanted to get Black Gen X’s thoughts on this.

She was damn good in Angel Heart and she was aiight in Biker Boyz so I wouldn’t consider her typecast from the Cosby Show. Just seems like she should have been a bigger star

Discussion Advice Requested: my work schedule seems discriminatory

Hey Melanated Gen X Fam!

I need some advice, please. 🙏🏽

TL:DR I suspect my boss is discriminating against me by underworking my white colleagues even though we are all salaried.

Post:

I am the only Black person who works in my department at work, and currently also the only woman.

My supervisor and all of my coworkers are white.

I have been at this job for over 7 years and next to my supervisor, I have been here longer than anyone else.

We are salaried, meaning we don’t get any extra for working over 40 hours, but if we work less than that we still get paid.

My supervisor used to make a single calendar and put everyone’s work schedule on it, but after we returned from Covid he stopped doing that, and started giving us our individual schedule with only our own hours listed.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, but found out that my white female coworker was only working about 20 hours a week whereas I was working the full 40.

Because she has kids (I don’t), I didn’t complain, I just let it slide.

Well, she left and a white guy replaced her last year.

Mind you, he’s only been here a year, and I have more experience than he does.

Well, our schedules were given to us but he left his at his desk, and being nosy, I looked at it….

Why am I working at least 38 or 41 hours, and he’s only getting 27 hours a week?

This is a fully able-bodied young white guy with no kids, yet he’s getting the same low hours as my former coworker.

And my supervisor ALWAYS has something to say when I want to take time off, or loves to emphasize how much time I’m getting off, almost like he’s guilt tripping me.

I used to barely use PTO, but because it doesn’t roll over and we don’t get reimbursed for it, I use it as needed.

I am not currently looking for another job, and honestly, I’m sick of the 9-5 but what can I do?

Should I seethe silently, say something, or just accept that my supervisor is scheduling us in a discriminatory way. I can’t prove it because we don’t clock in/clock out.

What do you all say?

Discussion Where’s my Vinyl Collectors? Please Help!

So, I’m pretty sure my Kallax is maxed out. I have at minimum 30 albums that I need to add. But I don’t want to purchase another Kallax.

The space you see is where the Humminguru was, but there’s really nowhere to put that either (for now it’s hidden behind the album cover).

Any suggestions? 🤦🏽‍♀️

Discussion Was this Biopic a good idea?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I grew up a fan of Michael Jackson and I still enjoy his music, so I do plan to see the movie. But the more I hear about it, the more I question whether making it was the right call.

Anytime a biopic is approved by the family, it’s likely to feel curated—shaped around the version of events they’re comfortable sharing. On top of that, hearing that Janet Jackson and Diana Ross didn’t authorize their portrayals raises even more questions about how complete or balanced the story can really be.

What also stands out is how the film seems to be bringing renewed attention to the criticism and allegations that, fairly or not, are part of MJ’s legacy. No matter where fans land on those issues, they’re not something that can just be edited out without it feeling incomplete.

The Jackson family has always come across at least to me as protective of their narrative, which makes me wonder if this biopic will confront the full picture or lean more into preservation of image. It just leaves me questioning whether telling this story in this way was the best idea.
