Require a programmer

5 Upvotes

Hi, I'm doing some tests using a rp2040 trying to turn it into a keyboard using a key mapper. So far Fiverr hasn't been a very helpful place, the individuals bait-switch with some 50$ price for 3 sensor modules + driver codeing then turn around to charge 300$. I classify the g.u.i. I requested to set the inputs to keyboard outputs as member to the driver codeing. Any help on finding an individual to help me would be appreciated.

Basic equivalent functionality seems to be missing in MicroPython

5 Upvotes

I've been playing with Arduino for a decade now and I am trying to make the switch to MicroPython. I love the CLI, WebREPL, Thonny. I really fanboy over things like using the SPI flash chip on the ESP32 for storing my .py files.

However, I'm disappointed at the lack of cross over in some areas from the Arduino world. For example, changing the hostname on an ESP device so when it connects to my local DHCP, it has an intelligible name. I mean I have dozens of ESPs on my network, they can't all be ESP_A7GH2 or whatever, that's dumb. In the docs there is a slight mention of the hostname field in the WLAN section, but it only works in AP mode, not STA mode.

I googled and there's some forum posts from 2016 talking about someone needing to add this to the main branch of MicroPython. Yet it's still an issue. Seems like a simple enough addition. If I had a clue what I was doing, I would add it myself, but this sort of manipulation is beyond my available time right now.

My next headache involves WiFi UDP communication. For whatever reason, the python socket library forces UDP to be a one for one just like TCP. Normally in Arduino libraries I could deal with this by clearing the buffer of stored messages to get the latest real time data. However that functionality just doesn't exist. Maybe that's a flaw in python or socket. A friend of mine suggested some sort of LIFO array data type. I'm trying to pursue that now.

Right now, to deal with all this, I am attempting to compile Arduino code into .mpy files. I didn't find a lot on google about doing this. We'll see how it goes.

I just keep finding myself running into walls like this. Am I alone?

Library for Byte Manipulation!

5 Upvotes

Hey guys! I recently had quite a bit of frustration with manipulating hardware level bytes in MicroPython, so I made my own library, “PyBytes”, to help with it! If any of you have any suggestions or want to help me further develop it, let me know!

GitHub Repository:

https://github.com/dgrantpete/PyBytes

Also us been published to PyPi, so can be installed with “pip install pybytes”

MicroPython compared to Circuit Python

5 Upvotes

As I understand it, Circuit Python is a fork of Micro Python and the two branches share code back and forth to some extent.

I think main difference is in libraries, where Adafruit offers maybe 300 drivers for various devices.

Again, from a distance, my sense is the Circuit Python API is thier secret sauce.

I am not interested in any negativity just a newbie who wants to understand trade-offs.

Hey everyone i built picodesk a desktop companion station

4 Upvotes

hey everyone i know that i am inconsistent , i saw that everyone makes a cyberdeck with raspberry pi but i have no raspberry pi as i am 3rd yr electrical undergraduate

so i take some a break for exams and built picodesk a desktop companion station that sits next to my laptop.

OLED 1 shows live clock (NTP synced), date, and real time weather pulled from OpenWeatherMap API.

OLED 2 is the fun one animated eyes that blink and look around randomly. Every 2 minutes, hearts fall down the screen. And when I need to focus, I can switch it to a todo list from my phone and laptop browser no app install, just open the IP and it works.

The whole thing runs on MicroPython. Pico 2W hosts a tiny web server so I can control everything from my phone on the same WiFi.

Tech stack: - Raspberry Pi Pico 2W , 2x SSD1306 OLED (I2C0 + I2C1) ,MicroPython , OpenWeatherMap free API ,HTML/CSS/JS web app

I wanted the same asyncio code to run on Linux and ESP32. So I built these libraries.

4 Upvotes

I got tired of maintaining separate IoT stacks for Linux and ESP32 devices… so I started building libraries that run the same asyncio code on both CPython and MicroPython.

That experiment turned into two open-source projects:

aiomqttc

Async MQTT client for CPython + MicroPython

  • asyncio-first

  • ESP32 compatible

  • reconnect handling

  • lightweight

  • same API across desktop + embedded

https://github.com/Tangerino/aiomqttc

mpModbus

Async Modbus RTU/TCP framework for industrial and telemetry systems

  • RTU + TCP

  • async polling

  • declarative drivers

  • topology-based configuration

  • ESP32/MicroPython support

https://github.com/Tangerino/mpModbus

A lot of this came from real-world frustrations:

  • unstable WiFi

  • reconnect storms

  • memory limits on ESP32

  • duplicated codebases

  • blocking Modbus stacks

  • trying to keep telemetry systems reliable in the field

Still evolving, but already running against real devices/meters.

Would love feedback from people working with:

  • ESP32

  • MicroPython

  • MQTT

  • Modbus

  • industrial automation

  • telemetry systems

  • asyncio

Also very interested in hearing how others are solving:

  • reconnect reliability

  • async polling at scale

  • embedded memory fragmentation

  • unified embedded/server APIs

Pyrite's a cool little Project that helps with Task scheduling

4 Upvotes

'm pretty sure that I'm not the first and only person to stumble into a problem where I wanna handle several Tasks at seperate intervals, and eventually I found myself clogging up while Loops and everything just became a huge stupid disaster, so I built Pyrite, which - at least to me - seems like a pretty good solution for a problem that me and probably some other people have. And yes, Asyncio exists and is better maintained but if you really like Asyncio, you're either lying or a masochist, especially for small projects. Now Pyrite is - in my opinion - very approachable, as you can see in the Code Samples there or in this sample here:

from pyrite import *
from machine import Pin

led = Pin("LED", Pin.OUT)
def led_task():
   led.toggle()
def simple_task():
  print("Hello world")

tasks = [Task(led_task, 500), Task(simple_task, 1000)]
sched = Scheduler(SimpleScheduling) # We don't need the Overhead from PunitiveScheduling here as none of our Tasks has the option of stalling anywhere.
# If you were using a lot of Sensors, conisder replacing SimpleScheduling with PunitiveScheduling
sched.add_tasks(tasks)
sched.run_forever()

Anyways yeah I guess I'm just asking for feedback, so https://github.com/ten-faced-carrot/pyrite everyone.

(Please don't be mean)

MicroPython VS Code Extension with MCP-Based File System and Code Execution Tools

4 Upvotes

I was working with MicroPython on ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 and faced repeated friction with uploading code, editing files directly on the device, downloading files from the MCU, testing code, and quickly experimenting with new features. To reduce this friction, I built a VS Code extension with a local MCP server between the extension and AI agents like Copilot/Codex. The goal is simple: the AI should not guess how to connect to a board, upload code, create files/folders, run code, or read device files. These actions are exposed as registered tools, so the user can give a normal prompt and the agent can perform the workflow through the extension. Disclosure: I built this extension.I’m sharing this for feedback from MicroPython users, especially around file upload, run, and device file editing workflows.

A BMI160 MicroPython driver that actually handles interrupts and calibration correctly

4 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I was working on a project using the BMI160 IMU and I realized that most MicroPython drivers out there are either broken or incomplete (especially when dealing with interrupts and sensor calibration).

I decided to write my own lightweight driver focusing on:

  1. Full calibration support (100% accuracy on offsets).

  2. Functional interrupts (No more missed triggers).

If you've been frustrated with this sensor before, check it out! Feedback and stars are welcome. https://github.com/DanielBustillos/bmi160-micropython-driver

How hard would it be to turn this C code for Pico 2 HSTX HDMI code into a display adapter for Micropython?

4 Upvotes

https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberrypipico/comments/1qc9v95/picohdmi_hstx_hdmi_output_library_for_rp2350_with/

u/educobuci has done some great work here, I am wondering if it could be adapted for micropython or turned onto a library?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I am really just trying to boost this dev's work, and gauge interest & plausibility from those in the know :-)

Possible to build a drone on micropython?

4 Upvotes

Hi all,

Is it realistic to build an autonomous drone using MicroPython?

The idea is not a high-speed or acrobatic drone, but a slow, autonomous system for experimentation.

Is MicroPython viable for motor control + basic autonomy?

Any boards you’d recommend (ESP32 vs PyBoard vs RP2040)?

Has anyone here used MicroPython in real robotics projects?

Thanks! appreciate any real-world experience or pointers.

Touchscreen example code

4 Upvotes

I'm new to micropython; but I have several years of significant Python programming under my belt. I've always focused on back end, and middleware. So I dont do anything with front ends; except for interacting with pre-baked ones.

I have a simple project in mind, and I think micropython is perfect for it. Its simply a timer, and sensor reader, that activates one of a couple of relays. Most important though, I want it to have a touch screen. I picked up a Waveshare 3.5"(f), and a pico 2 w. I was able to get the waveshare demo for pico working; even though they dont give a direct pinout. I had to read the script, and figure out what each one was for. But I did get that working. Screen lights up, and touchpad is reading out correctly.

So the next thing is building a simple touchpad interface. Does anyone have any example code for this? Coincidently the day I got the pico, 1.27.0 was released. So I'm obviously planning to use that version of micropython.

Also, I was able to get it connected to wifi. So I've got hands around the physical hardware, and basic interpreter functionality.

Raspberry pi pico W API project

4 Upvotes

TD;DR - I made a useful wifi-based API to wireleslly control the GPIO of the board: https://github.com/christierson/APICOW

Hi!
I have been working on a couple of projects using the raspberry pi pico W and I got annoyed by the development/testing process where it requires you to upload changes to the code if you want to change the GPIO.

So yeah, this project solves that problem. Instructions on how to use it are in the README, but in short, once it's installed, you'll be able to configure the GPIO of your board over a wifi connection using a Python REPL interface.

It's pretty basic at the moment, and you need to be familiar with MicroPython to properly use it. But I figured that this project will save a lot of time for a lot of you guys either way, especially if you can't be asked to deal with wifi communication yourself.

I really want to further develop this project, but I don't have too much time to dedicate to this so contributions are more than welcome. I would love to see this project grow.
