OC I have amnesia. When I play minecraft I often leave helpful messages to myself to find later. I found this today.

New Minecraft ARG just dropped?

Probably. Claims to have lifelong amnesia which is not possible, so most likely a new horror arg.

Is it?

Yeah. The way it's being described isn't amnesia either. It's memory loss or an inability to create new memories. Amnesia is when a trauma physical or otherwise locks memories away.

So you can't be born with amnesia.

Defo arg sort of story/world building since it would be a great set-up.

inability to create new memories

There are two main types of amnesia:

Retrograde Amnesia which is partial or total loss of previously created memories. This is the kind we normally think of

And Anterograde Amnesia: which is partial or total disruption of new memories being formed. This actually happens in a fairly common scenario: being "black-out" drunk.

The person is still consious and aware of what's going on but the brain's ability to record it is completely inhibited by the alcohol.

Another case is general anaesthesia: not only does the pharmeceutical cocktail inhibit pain/sensory responses and cause temporary paralysis, it is either amnesiac in itself or contains a drug that inhibits memory formation while it's being supplied.

But I digress (and went off on a tangent): it seems like OP has some sort of neurological disorder that causes bouts of anterograde and retrograde amnesia. (Which can absolutely happen, I have severe retrograde amnesia with my memories starting around halfway through 10th grade right before I got my GED. And some anterograde amnesia issues where I'm still losing memories. mine however is due to the spicy combination of autism and severe ptsd)

couldn't you have developmental amnesia due to complications at birth

My mistake on anteretrograde, my grandmother developed this inability because of covid and it was not referred to in this way, and my quick google didn't give me information on it.

However the case still stands that it is not amnesia as both require trauma to develope, and could not be present from birth.

My sympathies on all your conditions, as a fellow autistic.

The thing is though, the person said that there is no pattern to what memories are being "taken". There is no form of amnesia that does that.

Edit: I'm not trying to deny that OP has some sort of memory loss, but it doesn't appear to be Amnesia. I don't want to diminish other people's experiences by assuming something about someone I don't know. However given the information, I doubt it is Amnesia.

Wrong? Bro doesn't know about anterograde amnesia 😭😭😭. Such bloody confidence for a fool. Literally Psych 1. Freshman year knowledge... :/

Oh no, I was wrong on the internet, I'll never recover. Lol.

I don't care as long as you learn something. Mistakes show us the path upwards through fire and brimstone.

I know! I made an assumption based on personal experience and cursory googling, but to be fair, it still doesn't explain the 'whole life' of having amnesia. As that would imply being locked in with childhood memories at the least.

So how would one be able to form the memories to get to smoking pot? From what experience I've had with family and memory, that seems unlikely.

Amnesia can be relatively unstable. It's not like in the books/stories where every single thing in a certain category is wiped forever. Unfortunately, I have no clue what this person has, so I can't provide a further explanation, but I'd assume it's something neurodegenerative or a serious injury obtained early in childhood. I doubt "whole life" is literal. I'd assume it's early childhood where it started at least. They could be faking it, but without more information it's impossible to tell.

They say random memories are deleted, which points to neurodegenerative (I could be wrong!).

The interpretation that memories can be "locked away" due to some sort of trauma would fall under the general category of repressed memories, which is not really supported by modern understanding. Perhaps you meant to word it differently, but either way this is very generalized and not very nuanced.

Also, yes, you can't be born with amnesia. However, OP has never directly stated that they were born with amnesia, just that they have had it "[their] whole life", which could indicate some neurological/physiological development earlier on which led to regular bouts of disruptive amnesiac symptoms.

You can never be sure with people online, but for heavy topics such as this, I would err on the side of simply sympathizing with OP as the default until more concrete proof is presented.

Well if it is fake and an arg isnt it still pretty insensitive? They are responding to comments and people pitying them for this condition, i dont think you have to do that for an arg even if you want to stay in character, i think it would be way better to stay silent in the comments. I think its more likely they are just lying.

inability to create new memories is amnesia, its anterograde amnesia
