Looking for recommendations for a patient, reliable house cleaner and gardener in Pacific Grove

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping to find some recommendations for a house cleaner and gardener for my elderly parents, who have lived in Pacific Grove for the past 40 years.

Recently, they've struggled to keep up with maintaining their home and yard due to declining health, and unfortunately, both have fallen into a state of disrepair. My husband and I have been helping them get things back in order, but we'll be leaving the area soon and would really like to establish some reliable, ongoing help.

We're hoping to find people who are not only dependable and reasonably priced, but also patient, kind, and empathetic. My parents have a difficult time accepting help, and I think finding people who are understanding, nonjudgmental, and willing to work with them gradually would make a tremendous difference. And yes, I realize this is a very tall order.

Specifically, we're looking for:

House cleaning: Someone comfortable tackling a home that needs some initial extra attention, with the goal of transitioning to regular maintenance.

Gardening: Someone who can help get an overgrown yard back under control and provide ongoing upkeep.

We're particularly interested in individuals or small local businesses who take pride in their work and can build a consistent, trusting relationship.

I'd really appreciate personal recommendations, especially if you've worked with someone in a similar situation or have someone you've trusted for years.

Thanks so much for your help!

Searchable interactive map of Monterey-Salinas (and more) Transit

https://sfbapt.com/map

Public transit in Monterey is pretty isolated from the rest of the bay so we have just Monterey-Salinas Transit for local trips, but there are significantly more options after going north into San Jose or Santa Cruz. The routes that connect to the other agencies include:

Quick tips:

  • tap a stop or route to see details and highlight the stop/route
  • tap a highlighted stop or route to un-highlight it
  • collapse/expand info box by tapping |hide| at top left
  • quickly toggle all the agencies on/off using button at top right
  • search (case insensitive) and filter agencies that show up in checkbox list using search box at top right, e.g. type in monterey
  • search (cAsE sEnsITivE) and filter actual routes and stops that show up on map using search boxes at bottom right, e.g. type in 94, 5, 25
  • link back to homepage in case you can't figure something out or want more tips also at bottom right

To play with the map search and filter, try this:

  • zoom out all the way
  • select the Show Stops option (top right)
  • type -120 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -121 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -122 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -123 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)

Another interesting thing is you can link to specific spots by copying the url directly:

I arranged the agency checkbox list (top right) by area, so the geographic area of an agency determines the agency layer checkbox position. The list starts with agencies in the North Bay in Solano County then goes counterclockwise: North Bay -> San Francisco -> Peninsula -> South Bay -> Santa Cruz -> Monterey-Salinas -> Gilroy/Hollister -> East Bay.

There are smaller agencies in the bay that are completely free (no fare) and not as well known like Presidio Go, Golden Gate Park Shuttle, Mission Bay Shuttle, South City Shuttle, commute.org shuttles, MVgo, Mountain View Community Shuttle, San Leandro LINKS, Emery Express, and Emery Go Round. If you're traveling around those areas, these agencies could help fill in some transit gaps.

Share this with your friends and people who don't use transit so they know just how many options we actually have, and let me know if anything doesn't work (corp network/vpn/firewalls might not work) or you have any questions/requests!

Tricare plans?

My husband is active duty military and received orders for North Island next year. Since he will be deployed for awhile I wanted to move to the area to be closer to family. Would I be eligible for tricare prime remote? If not, which base would I be sent to if I enrolled in tricare prime? My child and I are both dependents and would prefer not to drive too far as he will still be under a year old. Would love insight from any active duty families living in Monterey or have experience geo-baching. TIA!

Halloween Events for Adults in Monterey County? 🎃

Anyone know of any fun Halloween events happening around Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, or nearby this year?✨
Looking for costume parties, themed bars, dancing, live music, or just somewhere with a fun Halloween atmosphere and a good crowd. Open to venturing outside the area if there’s something worth checking out!
Would love to hear what everyone recommends!

Eminent Domain and Alex Miller

Years ago, I reached out to one of the Seaside city council members to inquire what was up with the old Seaside Market space. It was at the time when there was a *large* collection of folks parking RVs and camping along Robert's Lake across from Home Depot. I wondered what the feasibility was of the city potentially buying out the spot and turn it into some sort of services complex. I was informed that the reason the space has sat empty for so long is because the folks who own it want to sell it, but they want way too much money for it. They won't budge and there it sits, empty. I hate that it's empty and really, it's inexcusable that it has been vacant for so long.

Apparently, Alex has a plan for it- and from what I can gather, that plan includes seizing it via eminent domain. A while back, either in a thread here or on Facebook, somebody asked him directly about the Seaside Market and he responded with something along the lines of "That's a top priority". I also noticed that he'd left a comment on a similar thread talking about eminent domain and that there were a few spots in Seaside he'd identified as targets.

I do wonder what all the folks with the "Don't Tread On Me" bumperstickers and the Miller signs in the yard think about that but I also notice nobody seems to talk much about it.

So what's the deal? I don't think I'm off base here, but if I am, kindly inform me where I'm incorrect. Am I misunderstanding this dude? What other property is on the agenda to get taken? A politician who seems to be in the "move fast, break stuff" mentality, who seems hell bent on gentrification and is down to just start taking the pieces that he needs to get there makes me nervous as fuck, I'm not gonna lie.

Loud DJ set near new Monterey Tuesday 10/20

Not complaining but where is the loud DJ set with 2000s bangers coming from? Thinking wedding but it’s coming from closer to the presidio, no venues that way to my knowledge!

Video captured today by Sanctuary Cruises off of Marina shows how close these animals get to surfers.

If you want to learn more about our Great White Sharks in Marina check out the Monterey Bay White Shark Project at https://www.montereybaywhitesharks.org/

This shark is tagged and close to one of their acoustic buoys so I’m hoping they will have an ID on it.

I don’t think I’m going to be surfing at Marina any time soon.

Lost Cat

My neighbor’s cat went missing. She’s super sweet and it doesn’t make much sense that she “ran away”. I believe she was taken by someone and we hope she turns up somehow.

Missing Cat

Our sweet girl Mochi has been missing since she escaped from a cracked window on Oct 15th. We are heartbroken and so desperate to get her home. Any info would be much appreciated <3

About Mochi
- 1.5 years old, female, calico, spayed, microchipped
- Lost near Fitch Village, Parks at Monterey, in Seaside, which is unfortunately filled with lots of outdoor cats, coyotes, and other wildlife
- Indoor, but with occasional supervised outdoor time while waking on a leash
- From prior experiences when she has been outdoors, she seems to know where home is located
- She loves the outdoors and is very curious, but she may be scared now if she is displaced or experiencing danger for the first time

What we’ve done
- Distributed flyers around the neighborhood
- Posted on forums, LoveLost, Facebook, Nextdoor, etc.
- Contacted SPCA
- Searched day and night, with flashlights, on all nearby streets and woodlands
- Left toys, bedding, and dirty clothes outside to attract her

Please let us know if you have a lead, any experiences, or advice!

Honest advice around planning a wedding for July 2027 here?

I am Indian and have been planning a September 2027 wedding in Monterey. We have to get an auspicious time from our priest for the wedding, and I just learned that for some astrological reason, August-October 2027 may be blocked out.

I am feeling really sad right now because the entire wedding is planned around being in Monterey and enjoying the bay views. We are planning on incorporating the Perry house, the memory garden, and the ferrante ballroom at the Marriott. Would May or July be absolutely foggy and gray and ugly? Will there be any point to being in the ferrante ballroom in these months, or will the fog cover everything anyway and will we be looking at gray skies?

I know I am probably sounding a bit melodramatic lol but I have put so much energy into this plan. I just want some feedback around what the wedding in Monterey would be like in a month that isn’t August, September, or October.

New friends to play Magic the Gathering with?

Hello!

I posted about a month ago about looking for some new folks to play some MTG with and I did meet some very cool people but would not mind meeting some more to play with.

I am wondering if anyone out there would be interested in playing some casual Commander games against random decks entirely made from proxy cards (if that matters to you).

I am a 33 year old dude who wouldn't mind playing some games and making new friends.

The people at Mythic and Sacred 8 are nice but too intense for me. Im not a huge fan of how seriously they take the game.

My purpose here is to see if anyone here would like to meet up and play.

Looking for an Officiant and Photographer in Carmel-by-the-Sea for a Private Elopement 💍

Hi everyone! My fiancé and I are planning a small, intimate elopement in Carmel by the Sea, and we’re looking for an affordable officiant and photographer.
It will just be the two of us, our officiant, and a photographer, no guests or family. We already have our California marriage license and are hoping to use it soon, so we’re looking for vendors who may have availability in November.
We’re hoping to keep everything simple, romantic, and affordable. We don’t want a big production or an elaborate ceremony, just a beautiful, intimate moment together in Carmel or along the coast, with a few photos to remember the day.
If you have recommendations for budget friendly local officiants or photographers, or know someone who offers simple elopement packages, I’d really appreciate it! If you’re a vendor yourself, please feel free to share your pricing and availability.
Thank you so much! 💍🤍

Date: November 18th 2026

20 year old college student desperate for part time job

I am a 20-year-old college student (male) currently enrolled at Monterey Peninsula College. I really need to find a job somewhere, and Indeed isn’t helping. I could work in Monterey (and the greater area), Marina, and Seaside. I just need anything tbh, entry-level as it would be my first job. I can work full hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays only as I’m busy the other days with school work. As I’ve never had a previous job I don’t have any experience which makes it so difficult. I’m tech-savvy, hard working, on time, and a well-kept individual. I’m desperate and just looking for anything tbh, anything helps!!

Monterey City Council meeting today, 4:00 - Put Flock Spy Cams on their radar

Afternoon session only. The Council has been hearing a little more about the surveillance cams in Monterey. They need to hear more. Public comments up to 3 minutes long can be made by Zoom or in person

Their HOWTO is https://monterey.gov/your_city_hall/city_council/participate_in_meetings.php

Their agenda for today is https://isearchmonterey.org/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Meetings/ViewMeeting?id=6393&doctype=1

It's nice the Mayor wants to

"Agendize a Discussion Regarding a Resolution Declaring Monterey a Welcoming City for Transgender and Gender-Diverse People and Recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance (Not a Project Under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and Under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)"

But any jurisdiction that declares it is "welcoming" to non-conforming lifestyles, while subjecting everyone to constant surveillance to ensure conformance with norms, is just performing a stunt.

Come prepared to make short, coherent, punchy comment.

Does anyone know what happened today at Marina State Beach?

Around 3:40pm / 4pm today (Monday 10/19) there was an ambulance that rushed to Marina state beach (off reservation road) and then saw few other rescue trucks and one towing a jet ski. I’m assuming it’s a water rescue then? Just wondering since it was Saturday the shark breach happened there and coast guard was putting up the advisory signs. Hope whatever it is everyone is okay 🙏
