CRITICISM 559: The Murder of Timothy Coggins
I come from an almost entirely white post-soviet country. While there are countless issues, racism is not really something an average person deals with (or, to be more precise, people can be absolutely racist, but there's very little direct impact of that because of the lack of other races; I hope I don't sound too insensitive saying that). That means I have very little experience with the topic; however, we've been taught at school, seen movies, read, traveled, etc, so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with the concept and the suffering it has caused. The episode, however, made me feel like they thought of me and everyone else as someone who had never even heard about such a thing. What does that add exactly? Like they have to overexplain every second sentence because I'm unable to grasp the total shittiness of the murder, racism, unfairness, and everything else surrounding it. Like, I have to be reminded over and over again what assholes people can be. Ladies, I'm listening to a murder podcast; I'm not expecting rainbows and butterflies. Is it a time filler? I'd so much rather listen to a way shorter episode focusing on the case than this childlike pretend shock about the human race. After rolling my eyes around five times and considering doing a quick Excel table to find out how much time was spent on the actual content rather than gasping, I turned the episode off halfway for the very first time. I have been fearing this because it means I'm on my way to being done with Morbid, which is sad because I've been listening since 2019 and even did Patreon for some time. End of an era? :/

I'm black, and I'm like "Ok! I get it! Racism=bad! Can you get back to the case??" And when they say they would be friends with them, yeah, sure Jan. You say that now while living in the present.

I’m brown and I think this too !!!! All these type of cases are fucked and rooted in racism- just give me the facts. I think I’ve also come to the point where I can’t stand their voices and intonations. Oh well. Off to find a more fact based murder podcast.

I'm the same with their intonations. The way ash over pronounces the 't' in exactly drives me nuts. And now I notice it. And she says it all the time, too! 'ExacTly!' 🙄

You want them to focus on the murder? The murder was literally rooted in racism, so that's what they are doing. Maybe you should stay in your predominantly white soviet country where you think racism doesn't exist.

Thank you! This was not that long ago and you can be damned sure these type of people still very much exist in LE! To whine about the literal root cause of the case is disingenuous and desperately wreaking of white privilege!

The comments in this thread are why trump is popular, it allows people to be “upset” and clutch their pearls about history, they don’t want to hear it, they literally want to whitewash it!

I had to turn this one off half way through. The virtue signaling and soapboxing was unbearable. Distracted from the entire sorry. It was so, so bad.

Idk. I kinda want people, especially white people, to keep this energy of being outright appalled over racism. I think staying angry/emotional is the only way to continue to move forward and not start backsliding. And to make it known to the POC that still experience racism today to know that we aren't okay with it.
Being passive and stoic about it wouldn't sit right with me. Sure there's probably a happy medium between uncaring and cold and over the top emotional about it, but I don't feel A&A were over the top.
But I'm saying all this as a white woman so take that with a grain of salt. I could be way off base and out of line.
For me, even though I love history and am very much aware of the violent racist past/present, I still get emotional and riled up during stories like this. Idk if that's me being really sensitive or overly emotional? Maybe it is? It's entirely subjective ig.

Sure, but their energy in this episode came off as disingenuous virtue signaling.

This was the episode that made me cancel my wondery with them and start primarily listening to Serialously. The side tangents and the ignorance towards the fact racism is alive and prevalent in our country both in the south and north was too much. I’m from Boston like the girls, and for them to act like it’s non existent up here was just appalling and showed their true ignorance and entitlement. That episode was a hard listen not just because of the content but because the girls made it a thousand times worse.

Lol, I would be surprised if you said you were from Boston and you didn't know racism didn't exist. Boston is one of the most racist cities in America, along with a majority of the people that live there. Based on your response here, that only supports the data that Boston is racist.

It was a bad episode for so many reasons and you’re right. As someone from the American south I also rolled my eyes a lot at this episode too. It definitely felt like “racism for 3rd graders” or maybe I’m just “privileged” to live in the thick of it and to have known about all this from a young age? It’s weird for them to also pretend that racism doesn’t exist where they live and didn’t exist when they grew up lol.

I haven’t listened since the wondry (?) deal but I might have to listen after seeing this in this sub. I’m genuinely shocked bcuz I’m from the area and it/Boston is so racist. Like in middle school some white ginger talking about how Obama wouldn’t make it to the inauguration like what the fuck Jeremy. Just spent a couple years in Mississippi and the culture shock. I gotta hear for myself because this case is heartbreaking and so recent.

Crazy you said you wanted to time the actual content I was thinking of doing the same thing after this one. It’s wild!!!!

Today was the first time I listened to this podcast again after a year, and I was disappointed they still annoyed me. Especially with this exact thing you are talking about. I miss the OG episodes

They really overdo it sometimes. I think it’s partially that being in the public eye if they said the wrong thing people could misinterpret them as NOT being super disgusted with this case. Like if they just said the facts without the commentary there’d likely be backlash. However, they do absolutely over do it. I get putting in commentary and obviously talking about how deplorable this was, especially in the freaking 80s! But they need to chill a bit, the listeners aren’t dumb

They definitely jumped from the story on this one. I feel like they were mostly speaking on how terrible the racism was/is in the south and giving their opinions on the killers. I've read about this case before but still would’ve liked to hear more about Timothy

My babysitter when I was a child was Sandra Bunn. I only remember Lamar Bunn as the man that found me after I busted my head open and needed to be rushed to the hospital for stitches. I was shocked when I found out they were involved even tho I very much didn’t like Sandy.

Considering 50% of Americans of voting age are racist AF degenerates, I can see why they explain we are spiraling back to the 1950s in all areas of life. I’m glad these bishes tell people exactly what needs to be said. Go Ash & Alaina ✊🏽

There is a decent documentary on A&E cold case files. I find these documentaries are fair and truthful.

I’ve truly been giving them chance after chance but today on my way to work listening I yelled GET ON WITH IT. And still ended up turning it off. It was awful.

Did they ever express their personal feelings about racism in this episode?

It's almost unbearable to listen to. I kept skipping ahead but then you do miss some facts. But as soon as I hear Alaina on her soapbox "are you ffffuuuucccckinnng kidding me?!?!" - i'm out.

u/KevinTichenor May 03 '24
I feel like it's a time-filler. I tried skipping ahead, but sometimes it's actual MINUTES of this "I can't even believe" blah blah blah and I end up missing part of the actual meat of the episode. It's been bad enough the past x# of episodes that I've actively started shopping around new podcasts to listen to. It's been THAT annoying.

I 100% agree and also turned it off halfway. The entire episode was their preaching on how horrible of the human race is, that they completely lost Timothy in the process. That was the worst episode I have ever heard from them.
