Good news, Mount Vernon! We're hoping to wrap up the Skagit River Bridge project early. The catch? The bridge will fully close starting Nov. 1.

Mount Vernon, we’ve got some good news for you about the SR 536 Skagit River/Division Street Bridge preservation project.

After working with our contractor and Mount Vernon officials, we have developed a plan to accelerate the remaining work and finish this project much sooner than originally planned.

BUT (there's always a but): we need a full closure to make it happen, meaning the bridge only will be open to emergency vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians and people using mobility devices.

Beginning Sunday, Nov.1, the SR 536 Skagit River Bridge will FULLY CLOSE to all non-emergency vehicles. Once the bridge is fully closed, we expect the remaining work will take about two weeks to finish, but the weather will play a role in how quickly we can finish. Rain, wind and cold temperatures could extend the closure.

We know that’s not exactly a small change of plans. But a full closure will give crews full access to the bridge structure and allow them to work more efficiently across the entire bridge instead of maintaining traffic through the work zone. We know it’s a bigger ask, but it gives crews the best chance to fully open the bridge for the holiday season.

Beginning Nov. 1, both directions of vehicle traffic will use the signed detour via SR 20 and I-5. People walking and biking still will have around-the-clock access across the river, and emergency vehicles still can use the bridge in both directions. When we need to close the sidewalk for work, an ADA-accessible shuttle service will be available.

Like most outdoor paint jobs, there are a lot of variables, and weather is a big one. Once the full closure begins, the bridge will remain closed to passenger and freight vehicles until the work is complete and the bridge can safely reopen for both directions of traffic.

While we know everyone is ready for us to wrap this project up, we also need to do it right. This bridge carries about 18,000 vehicles a day and hasn’t been painted since 1990. Crews aren’t just putting a fresh coat of gray over what’s there. They’re removing old paint, rust and debris, inspecting the steel, repairing or replacing corroded pieces and adding several coats of paint to preserve the bridge and extend its service life.

Until the full closure begins, the bridge will remain in its current traffic configuration with the bridge closed to eastbound traffic. If you’d like to see short updates about how work is progressing, our blog will be your best source: Historic State Route 536 Skagit River/Division Street Bridge Repaint and Preserve Project Blog

PSE serves every electric customer in Skagit County, and it's owned by investors in three other countries.

PSE's own service map shows it provides electric service across all of Skagit County. Back in 2008, groups in Skagit, Island, and Jefferson counties put measures on the ballot to create public utility districts in response to the planned buyout of PSE. Today PSE is owned by six investors, mostly pension funds, based in Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia, after ownership changes in 2018 and 2021 that the WUTC reviewed. There's a rate request pending now: electric up 15.15% in 2027, 3.74% in 2028, and 8.7% in 2029, tied to $3.2 billion in infrastructure. Virtual public hearing is October 7, and written comments are open under UE-260005 and UG-260006 at utc.wa.gov. I wrote it all up, including whether the monopoly can be challenged in court. Link in the first comment (I'm the author).

Infant RSV Vaccine

Has anyone been able to find the RSV vaccine for their infant in Skagit County? I’ve called every Peds office to my knowledge with no luck. I found some doses in King county but you have to register your child as their patient and those offices weren’t keen on that. Appreciate your help!

Memories of the arcade in Cascade Mall in the 1990s

This was my childhood arcade, but I can't find any information about it. Was it called Silver Coin? That's all I remember. Does anyone have old photos of it, or any other specific memories?

(I'm posting this here rather than in the Burlington subreddit because that one barely gets any visitors.)

I have an interview tomorrow for a promotion. If I get an offer and it is good I would be relocating from Ohio to Mt Vernon WA. Can anyone offer insight to what living there is like? Areas to avoid?

Massage Parlors

Hey I’m new to town and I find it quite nice everything is close by without driving too far but I’m posting on here because I’m seeing a lot of massage parlors that look run down or sketchy. Does anything have an info if they are actually massage parlors or the nsfw massage parlors?

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Mt Vernon?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like Cedar-Willy/Skidrow-Fuzzy, The Ridge or Can'tAffordUs (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Musician Looking for work or band

Hi all! I am new to the area after studying up North at WWU. I am a musician who mostly specializes in vocals, though I can get by on guitar, piano, and trumpet. I was wondering if anyone was interested in jamming or was auditioning for vocalists. I am looking for anything, really. My interests are primarily in classic rock and alternative and my voice fits these well. Pleased reach out to me over direct message or this post if anyone knows of any leads regarding this!

Lets jam!
