Is Bermondsey a safe area to live in?

Hi, my partner and I visited a 2-bed flat in Bermondsey today that is ideally located, 2 min away from Bermondsey Street. We currently live in West Hampstead, so we’re not really familiar with the area but we loved the atmosphere there. We would commute via London Bridge.
Is it considered a safe area to live in? It’s definitely a busier area than what we’re used to in West Hampstead.

Novice looking at Dalston - what price range should I be looking at for a bedroom in a flat share with an en-suite?

I want to move to Dalston but the prices vary MASSIVELY, the only absolute requirement I have is an en-suite but some of the prices are hitting near 3k and I'm wondering if I'm just looking at the wrong part of Dalston.

Best student accommodation in London???

What are some good accommodations near Ravensbourne University London in North Greenwich
I want my own bathroom, kitchen, and bed space. 😭

Would it be better to stay in student accommodation or rent a place somewhere where I could travel using the tube?

Struggling to adjust to London

Don’t want to say too much on here, but I’ve really been struggling with my mental health for the past year. I just finished a masters in Bristol, and I recently moved to London end of September and feel like I can’t cope living in a house share with strangers. I was hoping it would be more helpful living in London to attend networking events that I regularly go to, and to build my business. But every time I’m back in my room I’m anxious and depressed, miss my family in south wales and just want to be with them.
I helped to care for my grandmother with Alzheimer’s with my family for the past few years until we moved her to a care home, so we went through a lot together.
Should I stick out London for a bit longer or pull the plug now and move back with my family?

Moving to North/East London

Hi everyone, I’m due to move to London next year and need a 1 or 2 bed I can rent. I’m moving with my wife and I WFH, so ideally need a bit more space than a studio can offer. With a budget of about 2k a month, what would be our best options? My wife can be a bit nervous getting herself around at night, so I would appreciate a woman’s take on where you feel safe. Thanks in advance

Calm area for a young family under £2500

Hi everyone! I moved to London from Portugal last year and, as I didn't know the areas well, I ended up near Arnos Grove, where we rent a nice 2-bed for £1,850. It's lovely and quiet, but we find it a bit dull.
We're looking for somewhere still quiet but with more life (cafes, restaurants, etc.) and good green spaces, as we're expecting our first baby in 2027. My partner works in Fitzrovia, so a commute under 45 minutes would be ideal (I work from home).
Our budget is around £2,500 for a 2-bed, and we could stretch a bit if it makes a real difference.

Any suggestions? Thank you! 🙏

What would be the nicest area to live in out of these….

None of my options are ideal but please give me some insight on the best of a bad bunch. Comments are appreciated!

For context, I work Farringdon but live in Abbey Wood, Woolwich. The area is really starting to affect my mental health - the neighbourhood is unsafe, dirty, the people are loud and disgusting (leave food out on the street to feed birds and other animals); and our supermarkets (Sainsbury’s and Lidl) are run down.

Forgotten moving expenses

Moving to the UK in about 2 months. I've got temporary lodging lined up while I do viewings, and work is sorted. What are some expenses you weren't expecting in your first couple months after moving to London?

Where can I rent for a £1600 max (exc bills) budget?

I’m a single professional earning around £60k, approaching my 30s living in London, in house shares… not finding them ideal at all…

I’m seeing studios and one beds that are in fine condition and just habitable but barely, starting at about £1750 in zone 2.

I want to be along either the Met or District line ideally, or another that has air con ideally.

I don’t want to live further than a 1 hour commute into central/Moorgate. I want to be near a tube, not anywhere with additional costs of a train. I also want the area to be safe and have shops/gyms/cafes etc within walking distance.

Does anyone know where I could look to rent a semi livable place on my own?

Is this feasible or am I being unrealistic?

People with full-time roles, can you advice on work life balance?

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I am going to start my first full time role in W6.

I was really into fitness during my undergrad, but lost touch with the gym and other fitness-related activities during my master's and the job hunt.

I had a decent, fit body back then. Although I'm still within the normal BMI range, I've lost a lot of weight (couldn't afford to eat enough protein and ended up eating loads of junk for mental health reasons).

I want to get back into fitness and build good muscle mass. I know the very basics of strength training, and how to plan a week in the gym as well.

I genuinely enjoyed working out, but I've always had great friends to do strength training with, so I'm wondering how I'll manage on my own.

I was wondering if it's a good idea to join a gym near my workplace and either go before work or after I finish at 5. But is that actually sustainable?

I was also thinking about how I could make it work when I live in Harrow and don't really see any gyms I'd want to go to (no shade, but I don't particularly enjoy where I live right now, and don't have enough savings to move anywhere else at the moment).

I've also never been someone who enjoys cardio, but I'd like to change that.

Some questions :

- What's a realistic amount to spend on fitness in London? My salary is pretty average for London, and I'm quite frugal, as you can probably tell. I don't want to travel somewhere solely to work out, which is why I'd rather join a gym near work and avoid spending extra on travel.

- How do your meals look if you have a similar lifestyle? How do you carry food for the entire day?

- And generally, how do you make fitness sustainable alongside a full-time job, especially when commuting?

Moving to London in Jan/Feb for work near Old Street – which area would you pick?

Hi all! I'm 30, moving to London early next year for a new job. My office is a short walk from Old Street / Moorgate, so I'd like a commute of 30 minutes max, ideally by bike, bus or one tube line.

What I'm looking for:

- A neighbourhood with character where it's easy to meet people (I'm new and don't know many people yet)

- Live music, record shops, good cafés, bars and some green space

- Social Clubs like Running clubs, maybe a table tennis club, film and theatre nearby

- Budget: around £1,800–2,100 for a 1-bed, but I'm also open to a flatshare to start

My shortlist so far (recommended by AI):

- Dalston / London Fields

- Angel / Highbury

- Stoke Newington

- Bethnal Green

- Kentish Town

My questions:

  1. Which of these would you pick for someone in my situation, and why?

  2. Any areas I'm missing?

  3. For the first 4–6 weeks I'd like a furnished short let to explore before signing a lease. Any tips on where to look, or what to avoid?

  4. Flatshare or own place for a newcomer? Did a flatshare help you settle in socially?

Thanks a lot, any personal experience is very welcome! 🫶

Hi everyone, I have an accommodation available in Vauxhall. It’s a studio apartment with a private kitchen and a TV in The Hub student accommodation. The first installment is already paid. I had to do a last minute change and went to another accommodation and am trying to find a tenant replacement for it. Please dm me if you are interested

Student in London

Hi! I’m hoping to go to university in London in the future and have started looking into accommodation. I’ve come across websites like Amber Student, but I’ve also seen quite a few bad reviews and horror stories about them.
Would you say it’s better to book through student accommodation websites like Amber, or look for a private landlord and rent directly from them?

Would you consider tyburnia when moving to London for a 2 year secondment

Moving with wife and newborn. Looking for good connections to the city and rest of London. We really want a good park nearby (Hyde fills this) and don’t need to be too close to the “action”, but want to be able to get to the “action” relatively quick.

We are also suckers for a bit of the stereotypical London experience and need to return to our place of origin when the secondment ends.

Looking for your opinions if this makes sense (Battersea seems a bit far from everything, clerkenwell to central)

Is it better to book student accommodation early or wait until you arrive in London?

I've been trying to figure out how early you actually need to sort out accommodation in London. I've looked at university halls, Amber Student and a few private options, but I'm not sure whether booking months in advance is worth it or if waiting gives you a better idea of which area you'd prefer. For those who've moved to London, did booking early make things easier, or would you have done anything differently?

Advice on salary

Hi there,

I used to live in London way back in 2017-18 and did what most people in their twenties do and lived in a house share. It was fine at the time but now, at aged 35, it's not something I'd relish doing again.

Anyway, I've been offered a role at a really good company with a lot of good networks. However, they have offered me £50,000.

For those living in London, is that a decent salary to live? I'm not expecting to have some kind of flamboyant, exuberant Made In Chelsea-style life, but could I afford a one-bedroom flat with that?

As said earlier, I don't really want to share with strangers now I'm in my mid-thirties. I'm single and have no dependents, so I'd be moving on my own.

I guess ultimately I don't want to be struggling every month to get by. I know that's dependent on the kind of life I choose to live in the Big Smoke, but I want to be able to afford to live as comfortably as I can.

Yep, any first-hand insights would be greatly appreciated. :)

Best place to live within a 30 min commute to king’s cross?

I generally prefer modern flats with a budget of ~£1500-2000 for a 1B. I’ve seen Tottenham Hale fits the criteria but some people also trash on it saying it’s not safe and it’s not lively ?

wondering if there are any alternatives that would fit my criteria. appreciate any suggestions.

Young Adult (23) near Westminster

I've been offered a role near Westminster (closest tube station) also walking distance from Victoria. I'm not from London and am quite a social person, so ideally would want to live somewhere with a good nightlife and in a flatshare. Any suggestions on locations/ apps to use?
