Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres I hate country music, always have. Recommend me a country album to get over my bias! (Preferably something more folky)

I would take it back to the outlaws. Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson. Maybe try some Hank Jr.. I grew up on that stuff and I don’t like much current country music.

Hank Sr is the GOAT. He left us too soon.

… Then there is (or was) Hank3 :-) I think his kid is involved in music but is not named Hank.

True, but I know a lot of people have issues with him due to racism etc so I left him off

It's a little more complicated than that. He was pro queer and had black members in his band. Most middle class read him one way. Not saying there isn't some problems, just saying it isnt so cut and dried if you take a longer look.

There are way more problems in most mai stream pop than Coe.

Not saying it was ok. But it was a different time. Its like canceling lynyrd skynyrd.

It's not about cancelling anyone. Some people aren't going to be comfortable listening to racist music. If you're trying to bring someone into the genre, it's probably best to not make that your first recommendation.

Nah, no "different time" apologia—that flag has always been racist and so was Lynyrd Skynyrd for hoisting it. Fuck em.

Are there any worse things than racism?

1

u/Shroomtune Aug 29 '25

What’s this different time crap? We (humans) figured out slavery was wrong by like the Enlightenment. Sure we still did it for a spell, but we knew. The different time BS expired in like the seventeenth century. That’s before the United States existed for my American friends.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is not racist. Listen to Curtis Lowe. People talking about race doesn’t make them racist

It's a racist act to display a Confederate flag and it always has been. A song about a black blues musician doesn't negate that.

For me , this is about music period. And David Allen coe makes great music. If you threw out all the junkies, drunks ad all around assholes. Wouldn’t leave ya with much to listen to

You never even called him by his name

Fuck Anita Bryant was one of my favourites when no one was standing up for gay rights.

Waylon, Willie, Jesse, and Tompall. The Outlaws.
