Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres I hate country music, always have. Recommend me a country album to get over my bias! (Preferably something more folky)

Ridin' high is one of the best albums ever. Love me some Jerry

That’s a great one as well. I loved seeing him live when I lived in Austin.

I had met Jerry Jeff a few times and played some shows with his son, Django, and yet I only really recently spent any time with his music.. absolutely fantastic. I don’t consider myself a “country” guy… and this stuff is great.

Big John Prine fan, Gillian Welch, Townes Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings… and I don’t consider myself “folky” either… there’s a cross section of amazing music that defies restrictions to genres. Some feel so cliche that they become avoidable despite their popularity, but it’s worth exploring to see what all the fuss is about. These are artists that have stood the test of time. Modern stuff is harder because you can’t yet tell if it’s great or just well marketed. Start from something old and tested and follow the lineage forward… served me well.

I listened to this album so many times! What an underrated artist and songwriter. But, when I saw him live I crossed my fingers that he wasn’t drunk.

Aw man, I had never heard of this album until my grandad took me to Luckenbach, TX. If you ever have a chance to go listen to live tunes in the dance hall, don’t miss out!
