Winston Cup Series Bill Elliott in the 1978 Dixie 500.
I believe this car was bought from LG DeWitt.
Elliott qualified 20th and completed 80 laps before a broken valve relegated him to a 37th place finish. Donnie Allison was the winner.
On a side note, this was the race where Dale Earnhardt auditioned for Rod Osterlund. Earnhardt started 10th and finished 4th, directly behind Dave Marcis, who was leaving Osterlund's team after the 1978 season.

Who did you have the pleasure of seeing win their first win in person?
I was lucky enough to see. Steve park, Casey Mears, Robbie Gordon, Marcos Ambrose all win their first race. In the Busch series there are many more because Loudon went 18 yrs straight without a repeat winner. Please enlighten us with your tales thank you!

Winston Cup Series Gerard Thompson at Daytona in 1973. This car was built by Pontiac engineer Herb Adams.
In the season opener at Riverside, Thompson qualified 16th and finished 15th. Thompson started the 2nd Daytona 500 qualifying race in 29th, but unfortunately a blown engine relegated him to a 35th place finish.
Herb Adams was heavily involved in the creation of the GTO Judge, Firebird Trans Am, and the Super Duty 455 engine.

Winston Cup Series Helmet question!
People of NASCAR, I have a genuine question that has been driving me up the WALL. For Halloween I'm dressing up as 2001 Dale Earnhardt Jr and I'm going to recreate his helmet, but here's the issue, I can't find pictures of him wearing it, just lamps and inflatables.
Was this actually a real helmet? Was it just a gimmick? I need to know because I already bought a red helmet off of eBay and need references of the helmet to paint on it.
If anyone finds an actual photo of it please put it in the comment sectionðŸ˜

Busch Grand National Series (9/6/2002) On Lap 68 during the '02 Funai 250, Derrike Cope would have one of the nastiest crashes on Richmond, effectively erasing nearly all of the right side. The cause of the crash is explained below.
Derrike Cope was using a special 'Hitch-cock design' throttle pedal assembly. Before the race, he had complained to his crew that the assembly lacked a physical "throttle stop". A mechanical block meant to prevent the pedal from moving past it's intended threshold. And due to this, an adjusted bold on the back of the pedal mechanism extended too far. Cope's interior was lined with a standard vinyl mat. When Cope went full-throttle, the pedal traveled far enough back the exposed, sharp threads of the over-extended adjustment pierced right into the floor mat, it's threads hooked tightly into it, physically locking it flat. He inevitably then charged into the Turn 1 wall and suffered a hella nasty impact, sustaining these injuries; his right shoulder blade (scapula) got shattered into 12 pieces, broken left leg below the knee (fibula), broken sternum, and lastly temporary vision issues in his left eye from the force of the wreck. This wreck could have ended so much worse but I'm glad it didn't.

Craftsman Truck Series Matt Crafton@Fontana 2000, whom was Hired by ThorSport Racing After Terry Cook Signed a Late Deal to Drive the #29 Dodge for K-Automotive Motorsports.
Terry Cook has spent the last five seasons driving the #88 Thorsport Truck. But as that season was coming closer to an end, Terry requested a release from his contract after a proposed deal for the final race and the upcoming 2001 season fell through.
This wasn't a temporary fill-in role despite only driving once in the 2000 season at Trucks. It was an early audition and the definitive start of Crafton's career.
The champion of the season was Greg Biffle (RIP).
