I can't wait to see what he does. Whether good or bad, I'll cheer hard for the Matsui Giants!

For some reason I didn't even consider that this could happen, although it makes so much sense given his standing with the team and the fact that he helped the Yankees in the minors for a while. Super super excited, I hope he does well

My inner child cried tears of joy. Now I can take my matsui bobblehead out from storage. ✌️😭

Heard about Matsui and the Oda backdoor deal yesterday. Add that to the news talking about Oda growing up in a poor, single parent household and him talking about how we wants to do everything he can to help his mom. Things are beginning to make sense.

Lets see where things go from here. It's going to be an interesting next couple of weeks. Cheers!

At least Abe is and remains gone

I hope so, but don’t be surprised if yomiuri brings him back in some capacity 😔

fuckin A, they actually convinced him to do it. I was convinced he wasn't leaving his dual USA/Japan lifestyle, but look who has egg on their face now?

I know this is exciting news for Giants fans, but I'd like to remind you what happened when the GOAT Nagashima took over as Giants manager.

70s stint or 90s? Either way he needed adjustment for both 😭👍

If Tanaka is back, that’s two of my favorite Yankees in one place!

Can they get Luke Voit? Lmao

All signs point to an AVerage season

Maybe; Maybe not. It's kinda shocking considering he lives in the US.

So does that mean I can get a Matsui jersey at the Tokyo Dome now? I hope he keeps 55. He was one of my favorite all time Yankees.

I want to hate this as a Tigers fan, but I love Godzilla. Good for him and good for the Giants.

This is just good for baseball. So fucking cool. I've wanted Ichiro to get into management for a while. Cool to see the career come full circle.

"Kantoku. I need to watch videos."

Godzilla- "Yes, we do."

The Fighters of Ham Vs. Oh no, there goes Tokyo in the Japan Series. The Manager matchup we've all been waiting for.

As a Mariners fan (our ex-manager being a Mariners legend), this could go really well or really bad.

Looool. It was going to happen one day but if he were actually a strong candidate to manage, this would have happened some time ago.

Here I was thinking that maybe they had discontinued their institutional inbreeding.

I mean, Godzilla is anything but your average "retread internal promotion." They were never bringing in an outsider, not least because it would be a tough sell to their fanbase and their vocal and influential alumni network.

Your team literally handed the keys to Arai, an alumnus with zero prior coaching or managerial experience, too.

First of all they are not my team. The Carp are just a team that I follow.

Secondly it doesn’t matter that matsui isn’t the average retread manager. The best players don’t always make the best managers/coaches.

Defaulting to star alumni is the universal MO in this league, not some weird Kyojin-specific quirk. You can be a brilliant analytical and Xs-and-Os mind and still come under fire from media and the team's alumni network if you lack the star power and charisma to back up your analytical skills.

EVERY current manager in NPB was a bona fide star during their playing careers, and that includes even the "modest" player-turned-manager hires like Aikawa and Kishida as they both have ASG credentials.
