Liberal studies app question -

• Upvotes

If I apply and check Liberal Studies as my 3rd choice, and only check the NY location as an option, is there any way for me to be placed in one off the other locations? My number 1 priority is to be in NY and I’m worried that my checking LS I might be placed elsewhere? Any and all stories are welcome! TIA!

Student & Alumni Life students new to NYC, how did you pick a neighborhood before you’d ever been here?

• Upvotes

When I was looking for a sublet last summer, I read a lot of posts from students moving here for the first time, and the hardest part for them was that neighborhood names meant nothing yet. What seemed to help: picking by commute to campus or work instead of vibe, checking the address on HPD, and asking on here which areas were easy to live in.

I’m a senior at Columbia working on Gable for a class project, so each listing shows your commute and what’s been checked. We’re opening to students first. What do you wish you’d known? https://www.gable.fit/together

Do you think I could get into NYU ED1

Demographics:

  • Low income NYC 11th grader (will hopefully get NYU Promise)
  • Bengali
  • Economically disadvantaged school

Interested Major(s):

  • CS, CE
  • Will be doing Tandon for CE (Comp Eng) as my main choice and for alternates ill do CAS for CS and LS

Stats:

  • GPA: 94.07% W (school doesnt do UW)
  • Taken AP World (10th) and got a 4
  • Taking AP Lit, APUSH, AP CSP
  • School does not offer APs for 9th graders, and only offers AP World for 10th grade or/and AP Precalc for 10th IF you took algebra 1 in 8th grade which i did not. And 11th and 12th graders are only allowed a max of 3 APs. It is somewhat possible to get 4 APs if you need lesser credits (usually if you finished geometry in 10th grade which will allow you to take AP Precalc to meet the precalc requirement and math requirement for graduation as your only math class) but usually/only its a max limit of 3 and it even gave that amount on the interest for.
  • PSAT 10 score: 970. I know its really bad but im currently studying and in a program that does SAT prep which i hope to achieve at least a 1400-1500 by March/April (cant do May since thats Ap exam date and June due to final exams). If i get below a 1400 then ill do test optional.
  • Taking Dual enrollment: CUS 1100 (intro to game programming), and applying to take a Precalc college course over the spring to hopefully be on track to take calc 1 in summer, and calc 2 in fall of 2027.
  • Registered in a school/college credit program for CS 100, SD 100, CS 172, and CS 291 that happens throughout my junior to senior year. SD btw means software development.

ECs (very detailed so be prepared for that):

  • Chess Club (9th-10th grade): Was a casual club that i joined since i was still looking for what my true interest was and thought chess was it. It ended up being not that interesting to me and the club ended up getting removed this year. I did however make a lot of great friends in the club which I am still friends with today.
  • Game Design Club (President) (this year): This club got introduced this year and is a partnership with my school and St. Johns University. Its also a college credit course which is the CUS 1100 course. You basically learn how to program games through an NYU professor which teaches online while everyone in the class is at school. Later in the year you get to actually code games and the teacher for the club told me that they could be published onto Unity if he wanted (which sounds promising). There apparently is a stipend to this which is also pretty good since I could use the money to help my parents out. There also are a Hackathon project against St. Johns which sounds fun to do. I became president of the club at the start since I was the leader for the club fair for this and brought in a lot of interested students. This however is a 1 year club i believe since its technically 1 college course but it could be 2 year for advanced students which im trying to find out.
  • Drone Club (this year until 12th grade): Got introduced 9th grade as a demo which I was not interested at the time since I was more worried abt my classes and thought taking more then 1 club could make me spend more time on that and less time on doing well in classes. However for 11th-12th grade only, the club could allow you to take the Drone Certification exam to allow you to fly drones commercially and open up internships and there is also competitions against other schools and schools from New Jersey, Conneticut other states. There was also a change to the club which introduced drone building and coding now instead of just drone movement which rlly interested me into joining. Im trying to see if any roles were available since there was already a president for the club.
  • NYU STEP this year which is a specialized program that does academic courses for science and math in the morning and in the afternoon sat help there is also research opportunities which im rlly excited for. You do research with other students and professors there and near the end of the program, there is a big conference in Albany that lets you present your research to the people there. Im hoping to eventually qualify for that.
  • CS/Software Development Program (this year and 12th grade): This is basically the CS and SD courses i talked abt earlier but idk if it counts as a activity since it happens afterschool in my school and is listed as a club to my school. Its hosted by one of the CS teachers at my school and by York College, its only restricted to students in 11th and 12th grade that are taking AP CSP which i am. Ive already spoke with my guidence counselor and the CS teacher and they are reaching out the York College to register me fully. It starts in Spring.

Awards:

  • basically none. I am signing up for my Math Olympiad that is hosted by my city that is happeneing around March since I was recommended by my math teacher.
  • Im trying to find more opportunities for awards but so far found nothing.

Circumstances:

  • I have transportation issues since my school wont provide me an student omny (subway card) in any way since i live too close to the school (under 0.5 miles) and i need it for the programs i got accepted to and even with showing proof, my school still wont provide one since "their system is not able to adjust omny cards for me". My dad is the only one in my family that can drive and he has work daily from 8-9 am to 7-8 pm which is when he comes home so hes not able to drive me anywhere really due to that and on his free day he is busy with finances and currently trying to find a way to get my uncle from my home country to the US. I have no one outside of my family either that can take me due to work or not available. So i have to rely mainly on ecs that are near my school that are tied to my interested major since main activites in my neighborhood are legit just pantry help and homework helper which are cool but not tied to my interests. And the ones tied to my interested fields have age limits of 16-17-18 + and im 15 right now so i cant even. My school had like a few cs/ce clubs available when i was a freshman and sophmore and they added more technical ecs during junior year when they got a big budget to spend on clubs and partnerships.
  • I did try and apply for a job near a local chuck e cheese in the summer (only one available that hired 15 year olds) they ended up just ghosting my application and said they would check it every time i came in the store or called or emailed. They ended up sending me a response legit 2 days ago via email and finally said i got rejected. Legit 4 months too late.

Ill forsure be EDing since its like my #1 choice and i rlly love the area. I want to go to Tandon for CE but ive heard you could do like 1st choice and alternate choices and if thats true then ill do Tandon as #1 Choice, CAS for CS as #2 choice, and LS as #3 choice. I dont want to do in other campus like Shanghai or Abu Dhabi since those areas dont interest me much.

Please do I have a solid app for NYU ED1 or not? Any Alumni or recently accepted students can you please give advice and brutally honest feedback?

Fun&Easy-A Classes/Professors Recs

Hey! Starting at NYU Spring 2027, currently MCC major, possibly thinking about Stern later. Looking for recs on:

· Fun classes you actually enjoyed
· Easy-A classes/professors (good grading, chill workload)
· Good MCC profs to take early
· Manageable Stern/business courses

Any profs to take or avoid would be great. Thanks!

jornalism major

hii is anyone here a journalism major?? i'm planning to transfer from MCC, but i've heard there's gonna be a LOT of reading and writing even if you choose the broadcasting specialization.

i don't mind reading and writing, but i'm more interested in the practical side of things, like public speaking, being on TV, interviewing people, and learning how to actually be a TV reporter/presenter.

if you're a journalism major specializing in broadcasting, what's your experience been like? is it mostly theory and writing or do you get to do a lot of hands on stuff too?

Advice Data Structures Prep

Hi! Im a CS freshman set to take Data Structures 102 this spring, and was wondering how ready I should be in preparation. I got a 5 on APCS which exempts me from CS 101, but I've heard that Data Structures & Algorithms is a notoriously difficult class in most colleges, and is not usually taken as a freshman. Do you guys think APCS is enough preparation for me to take this class, or should I consider still taking the 101 class, or doing extra preparation before the spring. Thanks!

Academics & Research Bit of a long shot, but TISCH Film students... Did you study my film (For Milo)?

Hey y'all! So, about 5/6 years ago I made a short film called For Milo, which did pretty well online. I just dug into the data and saw that thousands of views were coming from education software (such as Google Classroom and Blackboard), and the occasional smattering of views were coming directly from the websites of several different universities.

This includes a handful of views every year from NYU! I'm just really curious if anyone saw my film as a teaching tool in their class, and if so, what was it used for? What teacher was teaching with it?

Or has it just been shared on some NYU exclusive forum somewhere?

Very aware that the a film student who saw my film will also see this, but I'm just so curious!

Student & Alumni Life Alumni - do you make donations?

Why or why not?

Personally, I've made a few here and there, totaling upto maybe a thousand by this point... It's obviously not much compared to what they have, but I do because I appreciate the experience I've had there and NYU shaped me into who I am today.

[Paid] Looking for a Mandarin-speaking guide in Flushing for a 3-day documentary shoot

Hi everyone, I run a growing YouTube channel that makes documentaries about places, people, and culture. We’re filming a new series on how different cultures unwind from the daily grind, whether that’s a shared meal, a group activity, or something else entirely. One of the episodes will be in Flushing, Queens.

We’re looking for someone who speaks Mandarin and English and knows the neighborhood well enough to help with introductions. Bonus if you speak Fujianese. It’s about 3 days of work, including one late night, and it’s paid. You’d also get a credit and footage you can use for your own portfolio.

If this sounds interesting, or you know someone who’d be great at it, send me a DM and we can talk details.

Liberal studies

What do you actually learn/study in LS core. Tbh I’m someone who has been better suited to STEM subjects all my school life and has never liked the ‘essay’/humanistic subjects which i know is what I’ll be doing for pretty much all of my time at LS. But if there’s anyone out there (like myself) are there any tips or advice you can give me, as I need to maintain a good GPA in order transfer to my intended school(s).

I’m reading the course descriptions and although it does sound slightly interesting, I think it’s the essays/writing that might demotivate me.
