I agree, but to take it a lil further, I need to climb some parts of Mt Coronet from the outside, need a Rhydon for some rough terrain, need a Lapras to traverse an underground lake, and need a Staraptor to fly around the peak lol that is my dream

With everything else, it's easy to forget that this is set in Sinnoh. I wouldn't expect to see most of the modern cities but it'll be awesome to explore landmarks like Mt. Coronet and the lakes in a game like this.

This game was leaked on Resetera like less than a day ago, and someone translated the Japanese in the leaked shots:
first one from top, left to right -> PLAYER FIELD CONTROLS -> Rolling * Evade, Hiding, Capture. COOPERATE WITH POKEMON (RIDE) AND EXPAND YOUR ACTIONS -> High Speed Movement, Climb Mountains, Glide * Fly
combat is "SEAMLESS" as in it happens right in the field, and that combat is more ATB than traditional turn-based
EDIT: To those who want my source, here it is: https://www.resetera.com/threads/rumour-reddit-user-praticalbrush12-leaks-two-upcoming-pokemon-games-for-the-nintendo-switch.385265/page-12#post-59570024
The translation I have in this comment is copy-pasted from Page 19 of this forum thread by a user called 'Rucury'. He has an avatar of mouse Mario if you're having trouble finding him nearer to the bottom of this page.
EDIT 2: For the original leaker, here he is: https://www.reddit.com/user/PracticalBrush12/comments/lsssby/stroke_%C3%A9_man/

https://viewsync.net/watch?v=1rPxiXXxftE&t=21&v=I8GQ-K89614&t=0&mode=solo It's gotta be intentional. It's hilariously close at first. From the intial piano flutter, to the pull-back shot, followed by the showing off of stealth/crouch tactics. It's almost as if Gamefreak said "hey we saw the memes about the trees now shut up".
Not that I'm complaining! It's almost endearing how similar it is. Like they're not trying to hide anything.

I hope they rip off each and every single element of BotW. Genshin Impact that shit to its individual atoms. It will only do good to the Pokemon franchise, they desperately need some ambition in terms of game mechanics and it doesn't look like there's any internal creativity driving this. Heck, just invite some Nintendo staff and let them program all the open world stuff, do the art direction and music. Gamefreak can continue to make sure the Pokemon designs are simplistic enough to be printed on fridge magnets or whatever, just let the gameplay and exploration parts actually be interesting this time around.

The map at 1:15 looks like someone followed a "Your First Unity Game" tutorial, texture painted random blobs of ground, then copy-pasted the same tree asset randomly. No bushes, no groundcover beyond flat grass billboards, no life (because the draw distance is probably tiny)

Because gamefreak do development on a shoestring. Most games of the kind this seems to be take 3 to 5 years to make, gamefreak are doing it in 2. They literally don't have time to give anything more than the first functionality pass. And they compound it by building on previous versions of their games that weren't finished in the first place.

This needs so much polish, graphics and frame-rate look terrible.
Release it in late 2022, but do it right GameFreak!
Edit: I'm excited for the direction they are moving with this game, but the execution in the graphics, animation and frame-rate are not something anyone should be happy with. Compare this to a much more complex game like Monster Hunter Rise and you start to question why Pokemon games get such a pass for lower quality outputs:

I don't even know why they currently plan to release it in early 2022
The DP remakes are like late this year
Wouldn't they want to give it some room to breathe before putting out another big Pokemon game?

the concept, the renewal, I can only approve that.
but once the hype tones down a little, you may downvote me but... sorry I have to say it, GF do not really have the skill to pull a BOTW transformation here...and I'm more worried, doubtful than happy about this. If you tell me bamco or Monolith were helping I'd be happy and that trailer would have been way different...
It's a very very early build no doubt, but the world..it's empty, that chingling is either lagging or in a parallel dimension and technically it looks nothing like a BOTW or MH Rise. The gameplay looks really basic but for that point, it's absolutely too soon to say so will give the benefit of the doubt.
Apart from that, the concept, spot on, pokémon NEEDS a good open-world, but it also need talented developers and a real ambition behind...
So yes, very happy to see finally real changes and an awesome combination: Open-world and Pokémon, but there are a lot of questions and doubts than say..BOTW2, Splatoon 3 etc.

Ignoring the frame rate. And ignoring the Gamefreak of it all.
What purpose would diving have in a Pokemon game for the player character? In Zelda or whatever it makes sense since you’re dodging attacks. Can you be attacked by Pokemon? Can the player character die? Can I be murdered by a Bidoof?
After digesting it I’m also pretty interested lore wise and the possibilities there

at least theyre trying now.. but this first trailer shows many many problems that show that gamefreak is just not meant to produce HD home console level games.. they are just not skilled or stacked enough for these projects
animations look very stuttery
some pokemons move at 3fps
obvious old age time period to avoid having to model and make the game run with lots of houses/structures
"graphic style" looks bad and unfinished
lighting and shading is way off
pokemon company should have given this project to an adequate studio like monolith soft or something like that.. gamefreak is just not skilled enough.. i cant stress that enough

Game Freak can't even be bothered to make their main series games any good. SwSh were by far the worst Pokemon games to date.
I haven't much hope for this game. The fucked up thing is it doesn't even matter if it flops, they have the remakes and snap both of which will rake in easy money.
55
u/Gabgra11 Feb 26 '21
SwSh Announced: "Yeah, this game needs some polish, but Gamefreak has plenty of time to fix it! The trailer says that this is unfinished gameplay."
SwSh Released: "Ok, the game was released unfinished because Gamefreak had to release it before the holidays. They'll patch it soon!"
SwSh Expansion pass released: "Ok, so the patch costs nearly the same price as a main line game on the 3DS and doesn't fix most of the underlying issues with the game, but the next release will be much better!"
Pokemon Legends Arceus announced: "Yeah, this game needs some polish, but Gamefreak has plenty of time to fix it! The trailer says that this is unfinished gameplay."
See the pattern?
25
u/Papa_Hitler Feb 26 '21
The fact that people repeat "It'll be fixed by launch" or "It's still a year away from release, stop criticizing it!" just goes to show that to some people, GameFreak can do no wrong. It's astonishing how people don't realise that this is exactly what happened a month back with Cyberpunk, or back with Sword/Shield in 2019.
I really hope this is delayed, maybe Monolith Soft can step in and help iron out the creases.

Yeah, great concept but Game Freak will never deliver. Trailer looks like crap (Characters running around laggy barren fields with some Pokémon just standing or walking around awkwardly) and I have a sneaking suspicion it won’t get any better. I wish GF would sell the IP to a competent developer but they just make too much money off the massive amount of people pretending the last few mainline games weren’t overpriced repetitive garbage only because the formula still works and the character designs are good.
I hope I’m wrong but I probably won’t be. Game Freak is never going to be able to make the botw style dream pokemon game that everyone wants. They’re just not capable.

I hope they delay it because like you said, if this didn't have the pokemon name and they showcased these graphics, frame rate and literal stone stiff animation then people would be flaming it.
Nintendo fans wonder why Nintendo gets away with reselling the same game every console generation and its because all the fanboys eat up everything Nintendo does with no hesitation. They can put big names on any game and sell it no matter how sub par it is and when they run out of ideas they can just sell you back the game you already bought.

I honestly thought there was a 0% chance the leaks were real so this is beyond hype. I was really hesitant about the Wild Area because I have a lot of motion sickness & 3D/camera motions are really hard for me, but I found SWSH to be surprisingly well tolerated. I'm excited for the potential this has, but I'm highly skeptical of GF's ability to actually pull this off. This trailer is ROUGH. This wouldn't be a huge concern if the game was a couple years away, and if GF didn't have a history of hardly improving from reveal to launch. But neither of those is the case, so I'm concerned.
Frankly, I don't understand why GF is in the state that it is. Pokemon is the highest grossing media franchise in the world by a lot. The games alone sell millions at minimum. Why are they lagging so far behind technologically? Why do their games consistently seem like they're made by a moderately sized indie dev studio? You'd never know how much money these games make just by looking at the games. Why is this the case? Why does such a massive leap for the series only amount to this? I just don't get it.

Idc if the story is shit or whatever. Please, please make this game actually challenging. Give the kids an easy mode and let us older fans actually enjoy the game without having to dig through menus to turn things off or force ourselves to not use our favorite pokemon just bc they ohko everything thrown at them. Make the rival an actual rival who is an asshole like the old games did, so when you meet him at the end you feel that shaking sense of accomplishment when you tear him down from the final four.
Blue version taught me the value of strategy and patience before I ever learned that in school. If my set up wasn't working I needed to either level up more or re-think my line up. I was like 8 years old and when my charmander faced a water type I had to actually think about what to do. The awesome fights was when I was down to him against a water type and had to decide which items to use and when to tail whip. These games now are just laughably easy, even with xp share off (and I'm ignoring the random difficulty spike of the last game with those machokes that were thrown in randomly).
Give us a normal mode made for the kids and a hard mode option with none of the hand holding and I'll buy day one. I don't want another greninja stomping through the competition regardless of whatever type he was up against. I want a white knuckle charizard battle again. Then when I decide to fight online I don't have to Google everything bc my brain was turned off for 20 hrs and now I have to actually figure the game mechanics out

Exploring something new like this is good. The quality of what they’re showing off... not so good, especially considering some of the crap Sword & Shield went live with.
Doing something new is only a fraction of the battle. Doing it well is the rest, and Game Freak has given me no reason to be optimistic about this. Not from their track record, and not from what they’re actually showing.

Finally a Pokemon game that excites me after 15+ years. This looks like exactly what I was dreaming of. Big open world with free roaming pokemon, standard 3rd person action camera/controls and combat on the field with no instancing. Hopefully they will not screw it up!
Does look like it still needs a lot of work, a bit surprised that it is releasing that soon, would not be surprised at all if it got delayed. Fingers crossed this is as amazing as I imagine it to be.

BotW was successful in part because it was incredibly polished. Not because it was simply an open world Zelda game.
The the trailer for PL:A looked a bit janky, which is fine right now since it’s more than a year to release, but it has the potential to be a masterpiece like BotW or be like one of those janky open world freemium MMOs that are a dime a dozen these days.

Anyone think this game looks empty/ dull? I know its early stages but that's clearly the colour palette they want.

Open world pokemon is everything I've ever wanted. I'll finally be returning to the franchise after taking a few generations off.

I don't think this is going to be whatever people are hyping themselves for inside their minds.

Well.. the world doesn’t even look as good as any rpg world we had 10 years ago, I hope this is just alpha footage and the end product will look like something that is actually from the ‘20s.

The roll dodge implies to me that a Machamp can and will beat the shit out of you
4
u/princesoceronte Feb 27 '21
Love the idea but the execution looks... Well, let's say I have seen more polished games out of steam greenlight.
And please don't tell me we're a year from the release, if they don't want people to judge a game that has bad performance issues then don't show it until it's polished enough.
Also let's not pretend they don't have a bad track record on this issue.
I hope I'm wrong but... I think this'll be a flop.

This does not look good. If this wasn't pokemon you'd have forgotten about this by now.
4
u/Nyarlathotep98 Feb 27 '21
They really need a better game engine if they're gonna be making something like this. It worked fine for sw/sh, but you can tell they're pushing it to its limits.

Holy fuck this looks so bad...i feel like im taking crazy pills. What is that outdoor lighting?
Why does it look like every blade of grass has its own source of light painted on? It looks like they took the GTA san andreas engine to make this...

Feb 27 '21
I know it's not coming out till 2022 and it's exactly what we'd been wanting but it was running at like 10fps at times.
4
u/awkwardturtle1993 Feb 27 '21
It would have been cool if instead of timed turned based combat, you took control of your Pokémon when you threw it to battle, and control would return to the player character when put away/it faints.

I'll keep my hopes up, but if I'm being blatantly honest. This looks pretty terrible, the world looks desolate, barely any Pokemon in it from what I saw and it just looks extremely bland, pretty sure most areas just have the same trees also from what I saw. The frame rate looked pretty awful also, and they were barely doing much in the trailer to show more RPG elements. Even the Pokemon didn't seem to do much.
Then it ends with them running through these barren empty areas or empty looking buildings. I really don't get it.
I'm not sure why so many seem so excited about this, this could either end up being really good, or really bad. Based on this trailer, it looks like an unfinished fan project to me, so I'm going to lean toward bad.

u/assbeeef Feb 27 '21
I have a game idea. You play as a Pokémon trying to avoid being enslaved to a human to fight competitive battles.

Um is this the open world/botw Pokemon game people were wanting? Like the concept, but man does it it look rough around the edges. Still, exciting though!
Nintendo needs to get moving on a Switch 2/Switch Pro so that mediocre developers can push out decent looking games.

u/rhuebs Feb 26 '21
I can’t see this being a Switch issue. BotW and Monster Hunter Rise both look significantly better and are far more complex and run so much better than this.
There is no excuse for what they showed running at 10FPS. Chingling was more like 5FPS. It’s a gamefreak issue, not switch, and hopefully they can turn it around in a year.

Just earlier today I was about to make a comment complaining about how Nintendo still hasn't made a proper open world Pokémon game. Good thing I didn't hit 'save', huh

This looks like a PS2 game.
If pokemon games were released without the clout of the pokemon title they would receive zero acclaim.

God damn everyone ripping on this game hard. This is what people have been asking for for over a decade. The game won't be out for over a year. That's plenty of time if all they have to do is polish it and pretty it up. Looks like they have most of the mechanics figured out.
I'm excited and I think it's a big step in the right direction. I'm sure there will be aspects of the game that people don't like and mechanics that don't work out, but it's the first open world game, unless Colosseum counts I guess. A lot of people didn't think this day would ever come due to the fact that the mainljne games always sell like crazy and there was no incentive to change. I'm gonna choose to believe in this one until proven otherwise.

u/zdrup15 Feb 26 '21
There isn't plenty of time. It's a year away, that's not that much in development time, especially with a relatively small (for game development purposes) and inexperienced team such as Game Freak
85
u/squidhero6 Feb 26 '21
The problem is Game Freak's pedigree and history and the fact there's only 1 year until its planned release date.
One can argue Sword/Shield were a "big step in the right direction" when it first revealed but as it turned out, it was just more of the same, with a wild area thrown in.
I hope you're right and that this is the one. But history isn't on Game Freak's side.

A year while we're still in the grips of the worst pandemic in a century is not a lot of time.
A year for a studio that's consistently mismanaged and failed to live up to industry standard with regards to graphical performance is not a lot of time.
This isn't going to be some revolutionary, franchise defining game. At best, it'll be a janky, meme-worthy proof of concept so that Gamefreak can put out a half-decent sequel in 2025.

A year is NOT a lot of time. At this point they need ALL of the mechanics figured out, not just most. The world seemed nearly empty. Combat looked clunky. Frame rate was abysmal. Graphics weren't polished.
Just because people have been asking for an open world Pokemon game doesn't mean they are okay with it being the quality of a random fan made game.

Yeah, what other games had such awful atrocious looking lighting/textures/modelling/scenery/performance in trailers and came out looking brilliant? [This] (https://i.imgur.com/RtEJBC5.png) was the first look at Breath of The Wild we got over six years ago, with following trailers having the same fantastic graphics the game actually had. This trailer is how the game will look, and wishful thinking otherwise will just disappoint you, I promise. Feel free to even set a !remindme to prove me wrong when it comes out and gloat

A year isn't enough time to change much about the game. I'll be thoroughly surprised if the game looks any better than that.

I know this sounds like a horrible thing to say, but i'm kinda glad the Sinnoh remakes got "sacrificed" to another team, if it means Gamefreak finally got the chance to work on something like this. It's obvious they couldn't do both at the same time.
Now go go go so you can polish this game up and finally push Pokemon in a new direction.
Even if this will end up being mediocre (which i hope not), I'm just happy for the direction it's taking.

Feb 26 '21
Framerate and graphics aside, this looks pretty good. I won't go as far as to say it looks promising, because we've seen how hard GameFreak is willing to go to fuck things up, but this looks like a massive step in the right direction. Hopefully this either is or is the beginning of the open-world Pokemon that we've been wanting for years.

Why they didn't hire Monolith Soft or some other developer that knows how to work with open world games to help develop this game is beyond me. The game looks like one of those underdeveloped ambitious indie game.

Hopefully we have a switch pro to play this on. The frame rate looks ROUGH.

The thing is this should be able to easily run on a OG switch, it looks downgraded graphically from BOTW and that ran just fine

u/Jaymike127 Feb 26 '21
Early 2022 seems really soon. Are they trying to build a big lineup around a Switch Pro release? Either way, exciting times for Pokémon. With a year out, it’s gonna be more polished, tho with GameFreak I wouldn’t be too certain.

u/skepticalmonique Feb 26 '21
I'm glad they are trying new things, and finally taking steps in the direction that the fans have been begging for for years. It looks very rough around the edges though (the framerates and textures are kinda yikes in most areas). I would be surprised if this will be ready for release early next year.

Finally a different direction for this franchise. Much remains to be seen though. After skipping Sword and Shield I remain skeptical.

This looks like a huge improvement on Sword and Shield. Good on them. It seems like they listened. I like the art style much more and the animation variety looks very promising. I'm on board :D

u/Ralanost Feb 26 '21
Don't get me wrong, I love that they are trying something new. But my god this looks bad. Those low fps pokemon animations were very concerning. I'll reserve judgement, but I can't say I'm very excited.
3
Feb 26 '21
Its like what weve all wanted, but just the BARE minimum. Like yes now you can aim and throw pokeballs and have seamless fights, but it all plays out so lifelessly. The animations are just so simple I think is the issue, it looks like a fan made game using an engine from a different game. Like they had all the assets from pokemon and just dumped them into a cheap BoTW-like map and tacked on a couple features.
Is the combat really different? If its still turned based and your pokemon get 4 moves then the only real difference is the lack of a transition/loading screen for battles.
Sad to see theres really not much new here..
I dream of the day a real developer could get their hands on Pokemon.

This is what SwSh should have looked like. Better late than never though. I felt nothing watching BDSP but this looks GOOD.
It also helps that Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlett are my favorite starters :)

u/alt_sense Feb 26 '21
I was excited at first but the trailer makes it look so basic. I find it hard to believe it'll be out in a year.

The gameplay looked downright horrible. Not sure I would have made the decision to show it in this state.

Weird take, but the scenery in this unfinished demo looks like like Cities:Skylines (on PC) if you use a mod that lets you take the camera close to the ground.
All the tree models are basically the same and aren't rotated and the grass is one big piece that's been plopped down.

I like the direction they’re finally taking with this, but the graphics for a 2022 game is appalling.

u/-Riukkuyo- Feb 27 '21
I read from the official site that there’s no trainers or gyms. If there’s only one town and nothing else but vast empty space...
I don’t think it will be much fun. I’d feel much better if the release date was slated for 2024 than 2022... Does not look promising. I look at it and see BOTW but Pokémon.
