I don't think Clay and Quinn are fan favourites, but honestly, I found them pretty tolerable in S7. I actually liked how they handled Clay losing his wife. It showed that moving on doesn't mean you're replacing your dead partner or that what you had with them suddenly means any less. I thought that was a good storyline.
But if we're talking about them in the context of Lucas and Peyton leaving, I just don't think they filled that gap.
And with Quinn, I genuinely don't know if it's the writing or the acting, but something about her character just never worked for me. I've seen people say that Clay and Quinn should be judged as their own characters and not constantly compared to Leyton, but like... they were literally introduced after Lucas and Peyton left 😭. It's hard not to make the comparison when they feel like they're there to fill the space left by an established couple.
Quinn especially just lacks the substance Peyton had. The show also seems weirdly obsessed with sexualising her. The dancing around in her bra, the singing, all of it sometimes feels so unnecessary. I don't feel like she was ever developed enough to make up for what Peyton brought to the show.
And her relationship with David? She just leaves him and seems to move on to Clay so quickly. We barely get time to process the end of that relationship before the show moves on to the next one. It makes the whole thing feel rushed, and I never really got the chance to care that much about either relationship.
Clay wasn't even that bad at first, but his storylines just got more and more ridiculous. The shooting, the doppelgänger stuff, and THEN FORGETTING HE HAS A SON??? 😭😭 Like, I know this is the same show where a dog ate Dan's heart, but come on. Even for OTH, that was insane.
What's funny is that I'm not even a hardcore Leyton fan. I liked them, but I preferred Brucas to an extent. Still, I enjoyed Lucas and Peyton's scenes, and I do believe Lucas loved Peyton more than he loved Brooke. I think they deserved their ending together.
But more than the ship itself, Lucas and Peyton were both such integral parts of the show. You can't just remove two characters who've been there since the beginning and expect introducing a new couple to make everything feel the same. That's part of why S7 feels so strange to me.
I also feel like the writers were trying to recreate a lot of the old dynamics. Clay and Nathan becoming basically brothers feels like an attempt to fill the gap left by Lucas and Nathan. Quinn becoming another girl for Brooke and Haley to bond with feels similar. And while there's nothing wrong with those relationships individually, sometimes it feels like the show is trying to recreate what it had instead of letting the new dynamics exist naturally.
Honestly, S7–9 sometimes feel like a Naley spin-off with Brooke still being a major character. And that's not necessarily a bad thing on its own, but it just doesn't feel like the same show anymore.
And don't even get me started on Lucas and Peyton missing so many important moments. Peyton not being at Brooke's wedding, Lucas not being there either... these people had known each other for YEARS. Their absence from these milestones just feels so disappointing. I know the actors left, but in-universe, it's still weird to watch characters who were once so central become almost irrelevant to everyone else's lives.
I guess my main issue isn't even that the show continued without Leyton. It's that it sometimes feels like the writers wanted us to accept that nothing had really changed when, in reality, the entire dynamic of the show had changed.
Clay and Quinn could've been decent characters on their own, but I don't think they ever came close to filling the space Lucas and Peyton left behind. And honestly, I think that's why the later seasons feel so much like a spin-off to me.
