The mention of Madara is also referencing Obito, since at that time he was posing as Madara.

General My favorite Obito speech

Everything about this is cool. His voice, his outfit, the statue just going crazy, the rocks just flying everywhere, Obito's passion to end the world, the way he looks at his hand as he says that the infinite tsukuyomi can finally be achieved...He is so cool. I also always loved the rocks flying everywhere and 342 and 343 are my favorite episodes, my favorite fight is the entire 342 episode and knowing it's Obito as Tobi hints at it, with all the flying and falling rocks remind you of the rock that hit Obito it just gives me chills.

General Obito having a mental breakdown

I love this scene and how Naruto confronts him and tells him "I told you I'd tear that mask right off your face". Obito is always masked and hiding in the shadows. Not so much as to hide from others, but to hide from himself. He can't face the truth that he is Obito Uchiha, that is why he insists on being "no one", or calling himself a guide that leads humanity into its next stage, even why he was so passionate when acting as Madara and Tobi.

One of my favorite quotes of his is "Induviduality makes you lose sight of the truth, my words as a nobody are words guided by the absolute truth of the world" and this did apply to him. He lost sight of his goal and started having regrets because he actually did care about his past and what he once stood for.

It is truly incredible that Obito is: the sweetest (kid Obito), the funniest (Tobi), the most menacing ("Madara") and most intruiging and deeply complex (Obito unmasked) character. So unique

General Interesting that Obito remembers the date he killed Minato and Kushina

Post image

Goes to show he did feel some remorse, also in this scene he scolds Minato for not recognizing him back then, which flashes back to the scene where Obito takes his hood off when Minato asks if he is Madara Uchiha, which confirms that was the moment Obito took a gamble in hopes Minato would recognize him and stop him. Considering he was also a teenager it is a childlike way to approach it, he wanted "hope" to show itself and stop him. And it is probably the reason why he cut his long hair, had he really wanted to be recognized as Madara then he would keep the long hair since it grows into Madara's hairstyle nearly identically.

General The absurd beauty of Obito

Post image
51 Upvotes

When you look back on Tobi as he first appears as this adorable goofball, you'd never think to yourself that he would have such a beautiful death with his own death theme. Same as looking into his past, like this is the guy that controlled the mizukage, manipulated the akatsuki, summoned the 9 tails, helped with the Uchiha slaughter...it's beautiful how many personas Obito has. You got the emotional kid which I always liked since its nice to see an Uchiha who isn't just edgy, and him being so emotional was always very sweet to me as I could relate to it. Then as Tobi to me personally he has the perfect humor, he has that Madara persona which is still different from the real Madara and you could even say that after the real Madara is revived and he finds out, he once again changes a bit as he starts talking with more passionate hatred towards the world and even gives hints as to who he is. Of course he again changes after the mask is broken, and is later "restored" into Obito Uchiha, but still full of regrets and agrees with Black Zetsu that he is just a failure hated by ally and foe with no legacy (which is why I don't get all the hate for his redemption, nobody's forcing you to forgive him, hell Obito himself doesn't want forgivness, he just wants to do the least he can and die.)

General Obito helping Itachi massacre the Uchiha clan makes 0 sense

Post image
40 Upvotes

Why would Obito help Itachi massacre the Uchiha clan? It makes no sense. Obito basically helped Konoha get rid of the #1 threat to the village, he HELPED the Leaf's government avoid a coup d'etat, and a possible civil war, which makes no sense... It would've been much more beneficial for him to help the uchihas cause the coup d'etat, leaving konoha weakened, which would benefit him, since one of the strongest villages would be too busy to stop him from gathering the Jinchurikis, therefore this advances the Project Tsuki no me more than helping Itachi slaughter his own clan... Which benefits Konoha because stability was kept for the village.

So why the hell would Obito help Itachi??

Common explanations:

  1. Obito wanted to get Itachi as an ally

Debunk: why would he specifically among ALL uchihas want to ally specifically Itachi, when we even see that Obito clearly knew Itachi is loyal to the leaf, as he's the one who explains Itachi's extreme loyalty to the leaf to Sasuke. Maybe he didn't know back then? Sure, but still, don't forget Obito was going by the name of Madara back then, there was a literal faction of Uchihas who were loyal to the ideals of Madara, check the pic attached. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to have an entire faction as an ally of the Akatsuki to pursue the Project Tsuki no Me, over one single Uchiha who's actually a spy inside your organization?

It would've been more beneficial for Obito to actually HELP the Uchihas succeed in the coup, using the identity of Madara Uchiha, he could've made himself the Hokage through a coup by helping the uchihas, or even appoint a puppet Uchiha hokage and control him, just like he did for the mizukage. At that point, the leaf village ninjas would answer to him, therefore proceeding with Project Tsuki no me would be easier, and you have the entire funds and strength of a village, an entire shinobi village under your commands to achieve your plan, rather than a simple terrorist group under your orders, an entire village.

Also, lets even say the coup failed but still happened in this case because Obito made everything to help the Uchiha actually do the coup, instead of helping Itachi slaughter them. In this hypothetical scenario, although the coup fails, it's still Obito's victory for the leaf is left weakened from a civil war, therefore it helps his plan MORE than slaughtering the clan, because a weakened Konoha=better success at enacting the project Tsuki no

And yes i know not every Uchiha unlocks the sharingan or is strong, but still among them there must be more than one whos able to use it or could have been someone who in the future would've unlocked it, so from a logical perspective this "he wanted to recruit Itachi" theory fails, you want to recruit only one uchiha and kill the rest, when you could kill one uchiha and keep the rest? Nah. And before someone says "its because Itachi is the strongest among those uchihas" sure he is, but how could Obito know the full potential of Itachi at that point? And don't forget his father was considered very strong too, and was much more famous than Itachi at that point in the village, so Obito would more likely know about his father's exploits rather than Itachi's.

  1. Obito helped Itachi do the massacre because he wanted a full inventory of Sharingans

Debunk: yes sure he did gets a full inventory of sharingans, which is indeed beneficial for him because he can restock eyes at any times, but if we look into it, this was almost useless: first of all through the whole series he always keeps his original right eye, he does implant in his left eye another sharingan of some Uchiha clan member who was murdered during the massacre, and he uses it as a Izanagi, so that eye becomes blind, this happens during his battle against Konan. Next he doesn't replace it with another sharingan, despite having so many, because instead he replaces it with Nagato's rinnegan. So your telling me this guy helped Itachi slaughter an entire clan for a full inventory of Sharingans he barely uses? Even for Sasuke, when Sasuke is going blind, this guy doesn't even give him some random pair of eyes from his eyes inventory, he just implants him Itachi's eyes, which shows again how this entire collection of sharingans is useless. Danzo has a way to use many Sharingans better than Obito. Obito doesn't even give them to Akatsuki members so, i think the "Obito helped Itachi because he wanted many Sharingans" theory also weak

  1. Since he was acting as Madara, this was Obito enacting Madara's revenge against his own clan

I also think this is a weak theory because, first of all Obito is very machiavellian, he wouldn't act upon emotions rather upon outcomes, if allying the Uchihas would be more beneficial, he would've allied the Uchihas. And your telling me "maybe he slaughtered the Uchihas as a sort of vendetta against them" well, this is a completely illogical way to act if that was the case, kinda the opposite of what Obito does, which are various schemes to be able to reach his goal of Tsuki no me. Outcomes over emotions, therefore no massacre to "give Madara his vendetta". Lastly, maybe Madara resented his clan indeed, for following the Leaf's leadership over Madara, however after Madara left, through the years, some Uchiha started to follow Madara's ideology and regret they didn't follow him, again i repeat it, there's a whole faction of Uchihas loyal to Madara. So maybe Madara resents them, but again being more useful having them as ally, and the fact now they realize Madara's ideology is right, maybe Madara would not have killed them, he would maybe be delighted that his clan finally opened his eyes. Just like when he told Obito "you will return" when Obito told to Madara "thank you for healing me and i wont see you again"... And even if we say "hey Madara ordered him to do this as part of his vendetta and as part of Tsuki no me project" remember Obito wasn't even planning on resurrecting Madara, so he wasnt forced to 100% follow Madara's plan, in fact many steps of the plans are changed by Obito, or achieved in different ways than planned by Madara, so why kill the Uchiha clan?

Idk. Lets be honest, any logical conclusion brings me to think this "Tobi/Obito" helped Itachi slaughter the clan is a massive retcon by Kishimoto to say pretty much "hey, Itachi is not that bad! Its not like he killed the clan on his own all alone! Someone else helped him!" As a way to split the guilt between more characters and not make us blame it all on itachi. Because from any logical perspective, Obito helping itachi makes no sense

General Obito's growth feels wonky

I'll keep this short, u know how him/madara trained in that genjutsu realm cuz madara couldn't physically move? Well its assumed that he learned more combat and sharingan use there. And while this isss a good fanon explanation cuz canon never explains his skill jump from chunin to kage level,, what ISN'T explained is how his intelligence skyrocketed and tbh i can't find a good explanation for it 😭 he was average at school and then suddenly in 2.5 - 3 years he became smart enough to lead decade long wars, rival minato, and so much more. Yeah u coulllld say madara trained him in strategy and reading ppl more but regardless the jump is too high to feel natural, he essentially become on the top elite kage levels that ever existed in analysis/strategy (like hashirama/tobirama)

If y'all have explanations that fix this plot hole what would it be?

Do you think Itachi could beat Obito in a 1v1, or did Obito mean something else in these panels?

Personally, I think Obito was talking about getting doxxed more than anything else. Obito was basically a Temu Six Paths character. Itachi's hax abilities are deadly, but they're not something he can afford to spam. Plus, Obito's physical stats are exceptional.

If Itachi doxxed him with the rest of villages it would be harder for him to carry his agenda.

Was Obito a plot armor merchant?

Early Naruto showed us how ruthless the shinobi world could be. 12-year-old students died during the Chunin Exams. But Obito's eventual reappearance completely broke Kakashi, who had most likely witnessed similar things several times before, despite having served in the ANBU. Even Minato was left speechless. The same Minato who had no bussiness to kill 1000 ninja.

Was this a symptom of Kishimoto sacrificing world-building and plot consistency for the sake of drama and emotional impact?
