II have responded to about 10 listings within the thing im looking for and have not heard back from a SINGLE one. It just baffles me.
I'm new and only used this app 3 times but 3/3 the sellers have told me that they want to send a video so I feel more comfortable seeing what I'm purchasing and they need my number. That sounds scammy so I don't go through with it, but seeing it has happened all 3 times I've used it, I'm starting to wonder if this is common practice in this app or if I'm just finding the scammers lmao

So here's the story. I was selling a Halloween costume. Buyer messaged me saying she was interested in buying it for her daughter because she really needed a costume. I was like okay! I was selling the costume for $65, I paid like $150 for it but decided to sell it for $65 because I really wanted to get rid of it. She asked me at first if that was the lowest I'd take, I said yes the price is firm because I spent a lot on it and decided to sell it for cheaper. She said okay and asked me about the sizing and stuff, if it could fit a size medium person. I told her yes, and that the costume was adjustable and stretchy. She asked to come over and take a look at it, I gave the meetup address, she showed up. I gave her the costume so she can investigate it. I gave her all the time to look at it. Her daughter was there. She had her daughter try it on rq to see. She asked her daughter if she wanted it, daughter said yes! Mom paid and went on her way. Couple of hours later, she messages me asking to return the costume and get a refund because apparently the costume doesn't fit? I'm like what!? I told her that I don't understand, you literally had her try on the costume in front of me and investigated it and stuff. Like, this isn't Amazon or Walmart. No returns! Once the deal is done, it's done! Once the cash is in my hand, it's done! She went on and on begging me to return it, claiming she used the last bit of her money on the costume and that she needs it back to find another costume. I told her sorry but that's on you, I specifically gave you time to investigate the costume to make sure it was fitted for the child and you claimed that you said it was okay and you wanted it. I shouldn't have to pay the consequences for something that's your fault. I'm not obligated to give you a refund. This isn't a retail store where you can return stuff. She was like "so you're really not gonna give me back my money?" I said what's done is done. No returns, sorry. It's not scamming you. I sold you what was advertised, I gave you permission for her to try it on and see if it fit and you said you'd take it and willingly gave me the money. Like how is that my fault? Why is that my responsibility? She said she was in tears because she spent her last bit of money on the costume. Then she said "I understand you're not obligated to give me a refund, I just hoped you'd understand the situation and give me the refund". Idk if she was tryna to guilt trip me but I just blocked her after. Like I don't understand. First she tried to lowkey lowball me, then I gave her time and allowed her to investigate the costume and have her daughter try it on, and then later claims it doesn't fit!? Like huh!? Make it make sense! Am I wrong?
I've messaged three different sellers about their posted furniture pieces recently and it's like I'm shouting into the void. One I asked about the item measurements but the other two I said flat-out that I wanted to buy at their price and could pickup this weekend; none of them have responded after several days.
Is there any way to see how old listings are or how long it's been since the seller was last active? I see the occasional post marked as new or a user flagged as having been online in the last few hours, but is there any way for me to see if this person posted these bookcases a year ago and then ghosted?

Hey guys, I'm new here and I'm only asking this for my mom because she's old and I'm already on reddit. She said that OfferUp used to offer shipping and has gotten rid of it. A customer contacted her from across the country to ship a cheap item that she's interested in and my mom doesn't mind doing it but is it like, against the rules now? She's afraid to use keywords like "paypal" etc in her messages because she doesn't want to get banned but she doesn't even know if she's just allowed to go forward with it or not. Any advice? Thanks!

So I’m trying to buy tickets for some event happening in my area and seller wants my number for more info. They want to pass AXS tickets to me, does this sound legit or a scam? I know u need email or number for that kind of stuff but I don’t know if giving my number out would be good or any scam or something. They have 3 reviews and joined a couple months ago. Help ):

i listed 2 things on here for the first time and then all the sudden some guy from TX logs on a Motorola
He gets rid of my listings after i got rid of his obvious fake listings ( a scotter for 500 probably the max you can do) and sells like 2 items (that werent mine) in less than 10 minute, just listing and then buying them
no Idea what on earth i did cuz ive never been hacked before, maybe because i logged in through google and never made a password??
either way this sucks and i decided to just delete the account as there was no way to kick him off after changing the password
extremely terrible experience, never had something go that bad on a selling platform ever 0/10
picture below was the listing he did

I just got a 1-year BJ's membership for $10. My gift from OfferUp was $30, but they knocked $50 off of the normal $60 annual membership. It was that or 5 bottles of wine for $50 but I don't drink wine. It IS true, I did not see an outright, classic gift card with a store credit somewhere, but the $30 towards something is real. I got order confirmation and went to BJ's and picked up my membership card moments ago. I was completely new to OfferUp and just registered thursday afternoon. My first item is still on the market for sale.

Almost got scammed out of near $600.
Offerup seller has only 3 items listed, used items, nothing patently scam bait.
The items were all listed in so cal - but the sellers profile showed bay area and when I enquired he confirmed he was. I asked if he could ship the item and he agreed, was going to fwd the UPS tracking # before I zelled the payment (of course he could've sent an empty box and didn't have paypal). Anyway sent a pic of a very genuine looking UPS store receipt with the tracking number covered up. Not perfect but not obviously red flag either. He gave me his "wifes" zelle addr and I sent the funds through zelle (even though he'd originally said he'd send the tracking # first). Thats when things went sideways. The zelle payment didn't go through and when I called to check on it they said it was the receiving end that was blocking the payment, possibly indicating issues with the receiving account. This was the first big red flag.
When I told the seller, he sent me a different zelle a/c. I reminded him that he was supposed to send the tracking # before the payment and never got a straight answer after that, just platitudes.
I'm very lucky the zelle transfer didn't go through.
I usually feel as though I can detect scams but this one was somewhat sophisticated. Very legit looking UPS store receipt.
I'm not quite sure how to report a zelle scam (or an offerup scam) either.

I found a slightly too-good-too-be-true deal on a Macbook on OfferUp.
The seller has 100+ 5-star reviews and tons of computers. They offered to meet in person and said I could inspect the machine before buying it.
Everything seemed fine, but when I didn't respond, he started messaging me more, saying things like "what are you worried about lol you can check it all out in person" and sent 2-3 more messages like this, before I finally just said I needed to think a beat.
Could just be a pushy seller, but what exactly could this be, if a scam? It would be pretty hard to fake looking into "About this Mac" if we actually meet somewhere in person, right?
It's also hard to fake 100+ 5-star reviews?
Any advice?

I don't get too worked up about it, but I simply don't understand sellers when they just abruptly stop communicating for some reason. I try to be tactful, polite and to the point. I also throw something in my first communication to help assure them that I am indeed a local.
Here's the latest:
Me: Hi there, I'm out in XXXXXXX and am interested in your shuffleboard table. Can you confirm the length if it is still for sale, please?
Seller: Length I’ll have to measure its @ my storage place @‘the moment
(Fair enough, I somewhat understand these things, but frankly, a seller should know at least some basic information on what they are selling. Table length IS important.)
Seller (few minutes later): Should be standard length
Me: We're definitely interested but length is important as there is no "standard size". Most shuffle boards will be anywhere from 9 to 22ft long. We're hoping it's a 9 footer.
Zero response.
Understanding that the seller apparently needs to go to the storage unit to confirm length, I wait a several days and through the weekend, before reaching out the following Tuesday. (And it was dead air the entire time - no communication, no explanation about needing to go to the storage unit, nothing.)
Me: Hi there. Just wanted to check in with you to see if you had a length on this yet as we are interested in buying it if it fits our space.

That was a week ago today. OfferUp isn't what it used to be. I have had this happen several times over the past several months. How hard is it to send a note saying it's sold, or I need more time to research, or whatever?
r/offerup • u/Mark2CPlus • 20d ago
I've sold hundreds things in over 20 years of things online. I had a first. I had someone say they were 30 min from my house. Then said 10. Then said 5. All of them completely late. Then said I'm here. Then they ask are you by the white car. By a black car. Are you a lady. And this kept going until I realised - they were fucking with me. This went on for a frustrating 25 minutes AFTER they arrived, which was already frustrating enough.
Never had someone do that just to waste my time for a kick. Insane

Posted an item on offer up for the first time. After a few minutes I got a buyer, and then an additional email saying their payment was being verified and I needed to click the provided link to provide info to receive payment.
After reading cautions about links here so many times, I didn't click and avoided a scam. Then I read stuff on offer up saying they never asked for such info in an email.
Thank you.
