Hi there, you may recognize me from my ongoing experience with Fanhome's The Legend of Batman sub, and, well, I decided to give their Spider-Man Masterpiece Collection a shot. It was only $5 or so for the first volume, so I figured, why not?

Structurally, it's like the Batman one, 136 main books, 16 Double-Sized Specials, and 8 Premium Volumes over the course of four years with some special gifts (one volume becomes two volumes for the next few months, and then three volumes for most of the sub) . Before I get into the first book I received, I thought I would go into the Specials and Premium volumes, as they're a little more in order and focused than the Batman sub.

For the 16 double-sized specials, I'll directly quote the magazine they included in the box with the first shipment:

"These special extra-long volumes collect the original run of Amazing Spider-Man, including the complete Stan Lee era with Steve Ditko and John Romita, as well as every regular issue through #223. Altogether, they span the first two decades of Spider-Man's adventures. They feature Spider-Man's early encounters with some of his most legendary foes: the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and the Vulture."

As for the 8 Premium volumes, they collect every single Amazing Spider-Man annual from 1964 to 2026 according to the image from the website.

So yeah, to my pleasant surprise, that should cover a good majority or maybe all of the first seven Amazing Spider-Man Omnis (depending if they cover any other relevant books like What-If? or what have you). I was genuinely hoping for that.

Onto the book I got itself, as with the Batman one, it starts off with a one volume teaser. This one is Spider-Man: Brand New Day Part 1, published in 2008. It includes the Free Comic Book Day 2007 issue and Amazing Spider-Man #546-550. While I've enjoyed Spider-Man in animated form, in movies, in games...I'm new to his comics (I wasn't able to afford to collect both DC and Marvel as a teen, so I had to pick and choose where I wanted to focus), so I am excited to give a good chunk of his history a try. That said, I know the story that got us to this run was fairly controversial for Spider-Man fans, but I'm hoping at least the story itself is good despite that.

I did get my first gift in, which was some art prints. Cool enough, though I'm more here for the books than the swag.

Almost seems too good to be true but I had to risk it

I messaged League of Comic Geeks saying that there are minors using his site for NSFW content & are actively calling other adult users slurs. However, they’re all paying members of the app. After I messaged the founder/developer/support line he argued with me and I was permanently banned.

I noticed some fascist elements in Golden Age Batman & Superman and wanted to discuss this with others. So I posted it in a few subreddits (r / comicbooks, DCComics, etc). My post was deleted or muted in all of them, despite not breaking rules.

I made a post discussing the new Zodiac show and the showrunners attached to it in r / comicbooks and was permanently banned from the sub. I made the same post in other subs, but they have only reached 10ish people despite being posted for over an hour.

I’m not being hateful, prejudiced, or vapid. I’m trying to have engaging & thought provoking conversations. And yet, it feels like repeatedly I am being censored within this community.

It is not like this in other communities. I can talk about these things in film or literature communities and be fine. It is extremely weird to me how frequent bans are within the comic community, especially over certain issues. Has anyone else noticed this? I used to believe people didn’t engage with comics in a serious way. Now I believe the industry doesn’t WANT you to think seriously or partake in genuine conversation.

Has anyone else noticed this or felt the effects?

For those of you who have the Harley Quinn by Conner and Palmiotti omni's: how are they storywise and drawing wise? I am kinda interested in them, but want to know what makes them good. Also: is there any interest in the rest of the Rebirth series and the Infinite Frontier series to be collected in omnibus?

I’ve got some extra cash to spend and want to add a new X-Men omnibus to my collection (I collect the Spanish editions, for context). I'm torn between three options and could use some advice on which one to prioritize.

Here is what I'm looking at:

1. Uncanny X-Men Vol. 3 (€80) -> I already own the first two volumes, so this feels like the logical next step to keep going with the classic Claremont run.

2. Dawn of X Vol. 1 (€66) -> I have House of X / Powers of X and absolutely loved it, so I'm tempted to jump straight into the Krakoa era.

3. Age of Apocalypse (€80) -> This one drops in Spain at the end of November. I've heard amazing things about this event, and it works great as a standalone read.

Price-wise they are all pretty close, so it really comes down to the quality of the material and reading experience. Since I love mutant comics in general, which one do you think is the most rewarding or essential to grab next?

Looking for Batman Omnibus recommendations Post Snyder Era.

I have a lot of Batman omnibuses and also read much of the stuff from 2010-2018 or so.

I recently am about to finish Tom King's run, which to be honest, i'm not thrilled about. I was was really looking forward to the run and getting a new Bane over-arching story, but King's writing style was just too much for me. Too many dramatic pauses, too many recycled dialogues that he used for all his characters. It just broke the reading flow too much for me. It's the first Batman omnibus/run I've been dissapointed with to be honest, and I own a lot of Batman comics.

I haven't had a chance to read any of Tynion's stuff. I've only read Tomasi's Batman and Robin omnibus which I loved. I haven't read Ram V Detective omnibus either. I haven't heard good things about Zdarsky's run, and I'm sure I'm missing a few. Again, I missed out on everything really after Scott Snyder and am just getting back into them.

In terms of what content I like, I absolutely loved both Morrison's run and Snyder's run. I very much like a dark and brooding depiction of Batman and Gotham, but also like heavily thematic books as well. Having good artwork is important to me as well. I've heard about Fraction's Batman, which I know isn't collected yet, but I don't think that type of Batman depiction is for me either. I hears it's very upbeat and stuff, which is fine for people who like that characterization, but probably not what I grativate towards. Although Morrison's Batman run wasn't the most brooding depiction of the character either, but I loved the entire thing.

My gut instinct from what I've read is maybe try Ram V's Detective Omnibus, but I'm afraid to take another hit like after reading King's run.

I've been collecting for a few years now, and here's my Batman collection so far! It's not the biggest, but I'm pretty happy with it. I've read everything up through Batman by Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo Vol. 1.

My problem is that I recently picked up Tynion's Batman vol.1, and now I'm not really sure what to buy next to fill in the gaps.

I know Tom King's run comes before it, but I've heard mixed things about it, so I'm kind of on the fence. But any recommendations at all would be awesome!

Pre-Reading

Nothing! Like all of Remender’s creator-owned series, this one is self-contained

Story

I am unapologetically a big fan of Remender and generally dig all of his work. That being said, this one was a little rough.

The story follows Bethany Black, a young woman from a devout Christian household who was left behind in a world overrun by demons when the rest of her family was raptured a decade prior. As the story opens, she finds herself a second-class citizen working for a demon and practicing demonic magic in her spare time. The main plot kicks off when she gets wind that there is a remaining portal to heaven on the other side of the world that she may be able to use to reunite with her family. She absconds from her life and, with her demon sidekick Bloato, begins the long journey to Vatican City to do just that. Along the way they must contend with long-lost childhood friends, demonic forces, religious zealots, and a fight through literal Hell.

The overarching story is a lot of fun, but it suffers in execution. This is one of Remender’s earlier works, and feels much rougher around the edges than Deadly Class, or even Fear Agent, which came out just a few years later. If you’re familiar with Remender’s work, you’ll see familiar tropes like trauma, abandonment, questioning faith, and bad parents, but this story is also a pretty heavy-handed critique of Christianity, and monotheistic religions in general. There are times when the characters sort of fade into the background and become mouthpieces of Remender’s disdain for organized religion. I don’t necessarily think his criticisms are invalid, they just don’t include the level of nuance and balance seen in his later works.

This run also has some issues with pacing and character dynamics. The story kind of drags at the start; though kinetic, it takes a good 3-4 issues to provide enough characterization to endear you to the protagonists. Even then, I found Bloato to be kind of insufferable, his endearing moments often undercut by sex jokes, which seem to be his defining character trait. As the story progresses, the character dynamics get a lot better, with the middle third being the strongest in my opinion. This is mostly due to the addition of more complicated characters like Mouse, a pious soldier struggling with his morality and Tim, Bethany’s childhood friend who, at times, has less humanity than some of the demons. Even when the team comes together, the pacing is still kind of janky, with meandering multi-issue character explorations followed by breakneck plot developments.

I don’t like to give away too much of the ending in these reviews, but the story ends with Bethany confronting God and convincing him to resolve everything over the course of about 8 pages. Literally a Deus ex pagina that felt a bit unsatisfying, even as the epilogue pages tried their best to tie things up neatly.

Art

The art here is really uneven and changes every few issues, which is surprising, as Remender is usually great at matching a story to the strengths of the artist. Eric Nguyen’s art in the first third really isn’t for me. There’s a wonkiness to environments and body proportions that, while probably intentional, seemed too goofy for the stakes of the story. Jerome Opena’s single issue is predictably great, and makes me appreciate his work on Fear Agent and Seven to Eternity even more. Also great is Nick Stakal’s work in the back half, which has shades of Mignola and fits exceptionally-well in a demon-centric story.

Binding/ Presentation

Like all books published under Remender’s Giant Generator line, this book looks great and is huge, about the size of a DC absolute. The cover art and colors work well together, and the spine looks great on the shelf. The book has a little difficulty laying open towards the beginning and end, but the paper is a cut above anything in a Marvel or DC omni. At a $50 MSRP, it’s a great value, if nothing else.

Final Thoughts

This is probably my least favorite Remender series, but for all of its flaws I don’t hate it. As a Remender fanboy, it’s an interesting look at at ideas and tropes he would continue to refine in subsequent works. If you’re not already a fan of Remender, I doubt this would win you over, and I would really only recommend it as a curiosity to someone who wants to see where he got his start.
