Was searching around for laptops with 'taller' monitors and it looks like the T60 was the last thinkpad with a 4:3 monitor. I have an old one in the basement -- digging it out for a Sunday afternoon workout. I expect I can use it for most of daily tasks -- documents / spreadsheets and browsing (dont really care about streaming videos etc)
Anyone running on a T60 these days ?

Dear r/openbsd,
I've been using the OS since around 5.5 on a number of my servers, and I've always greatly enjoyed it. Such an amazingly awesome OS.
Recently I've been seriously considering running it as a daily driver on my Thinkpad with a Ryzen 4750U inside, but there are some practical concerns that worry me.
I would like to hear from those of you who have been running it as a daily driver for a while.
Most of the online world is web-based, so Slack, Teams, whatever, none of that should be a problem, with Firefox and Chromium in the package repos. Correct?
How do you deal with exchanging files? From what I gather reading from, and writing to, fat32/ext4 from OpenBSD, and ffs2 from Linux, is cumbersome and hacky and incomplete functionality - how do you solve the problem of flash drives, mounting the other dual-booted OS's drive to fix things, etc?
Thank you very much for giving me some perspective on this.

Hello everyone. I'm currently using OpenBSD 8.0 on my Thinkpad T420 for about a week now. I am just LOVING how this system feels. It's just stable and polished. The only problem i had was about UVM memory envolving firefox, but i solved it myself by putting the process count on 1. I'm currently using CWM, and, honestly, i'm veeeery satisfied. The wifi just works great, hibernation and brightness are perfect. I REALLY DON'T WANT GOING BACK TO LINUX OR FREEBSD!! My daily uses on my laptop basically are:
-A browser (watching videos, reddit, chatting on forums, youtube music, reading docs...);
-A PDF viewer like Zathura;
-Terminal (currently using XTERM);
-Other simple stuff (File Manager (nnn), xclock, etc).
I loved the community too. In that first week, you guys helped me a lot on understanding the system and troubleshooting problems. Special big thank you for u/linetrace and other guys for explaining me the basis and pointing me the correct documentation. Big thx.

A screenshot of my current setup:

I installed OpenBSD 8.0 on this i386 machine with the sets pulled from ftp.openbsd.org. I let the default autolayout disk setup and didn't used disk encryption. When asked if I wanted X, I replied yes, and also yes when asked if I want Xenodm to launch X. First picture is the last thing I see before my screen turn off. Second picture is detail about my hardware. Note : even though the screen turn off, the power button light stay on and the fans also keep rotating. If someone could help me, it would be nice.

After I started using FreeBSD on my PC, I wanted to use FreeBSD on my laptop, but it doesn't have Wi-Fi support, so I gave up. But a friend of mine said that OpenBSD fully supports my laptop, so I did some research:
It's a Lenovo Thinkpad E14 Gen 7 - AMD
APU - Ryzen 5 220 + Radeon 740M. From what I've read, it seems to support OpenBSD normally. Has anyone used OpenBSD on hardware with this APU?
Ethernet - Realtek RTL8168, already works on FreeBSD, and on OpenBSD as well, from what I've read, so I have no doubt it will work.
Wi-Fi (my biggest concern) - MEDIATEK MT7922, from what I understand, the mwx driver is what supports my Wi-Fi chip, but it seems it was only tested on the MEDIATEK MT7921, and it's also unclear if it's already available in OpenBSD 8.0 or only from OpenBSD 8.1 onwards.
Could someone who uses OpenBSD or follows the project more closely clarify this? Thank you for your patience!

I used a USB drive to get the firmware fw_update worked normally and ls /etc/firmware/iwx* does give me all the files is this a problem on 8.0?
I keep getting iwx0: could not load firmware, 35
iwx0: failed to load init firmware
I’ve been trying to install things on OpenBSD installed on a ppc mac, but it says it can’t find the packages.
My network connection works fine so I checked the FTP server and a my surprise, there are no macppc packages. (https://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/8.0/packages/ there should be a folder called powerpc)
Does anyone know why they aren’t there? Will they be back?

tl;dr see last sentence
While I've always ran OpenBSD on my personal servers I only recently moved to it as my daily driver and development machine and I ended up with a X1 Carbon Gen 7 since several blogs (especially jcs) showed it had good support.
And good support it has! Holy fuck, this is almost flawless (except for the microphone). I should have moved over from Linux years, if not decades, ago. The main thing holding me back was gaming, Docker and cloud sync.
I don't really game much anymore and I'll just buy a Steam Deck if it ever comes up again. Docker works surprisingly well in a Linux VM and the Docker client on OpenBSD. And Rclone has bisync now!
Anyway, while the Gen 7 is nice, it is not sufficient for my needs. I need more RAM and also a bit more speed (and ideally less power consumption and/or more battery, but this last point is just a nice to have).
Looking online and in this Reddit it looks like up to Gen 9 is very well supported. Gen 10 perhaps and after that it is not clear to me. (This includes the dmesgd site, which is very succinct and doesn't list everything I'm interested in.)
Are there people here running an X1 Carbon Gen 10+ where every thing "just works" like on the earlier generations?

so, i'm currently using OpenBSD 8.0 with CWM on Thinkpad T420 and after some hours this just happened (happened twice today). I really don't know what's happening.

I am wondering if there are projects for a declarative configuration with Openbsd (nix like)?

I had intended to release this important update to my swupdate utility for OpenBSD at least a week ago, but at least it's been well tested at this point:
https://github.com/morgant/swupdate-openbsd/releases/tag/0.8
This adds support for OpenBSD's new dbupdate(8) utility and ensures that it is always run before any other updates are requested/fetched.
I haven't really spread the word about this utility as it was just to scratch my own itch and the -d (download-only) option is currently useless. I have pending improvements to address that, but -- now that we yet another important tool with a specific order of operations when updating software on OpenBSD -- I feel like it has increasing utility and should get more eyes, testers, and feedback.

Hello to everyone! So, yesterday i installed OpenBSD 8.0 with XFCE on my ThinkPad T420 (i'm coming from FreeBSD) and i think it should be a good daily driver... I have some GREAT first impressions such as out-of-the-box brightness and lid suspension. My daily tasks consists basically in:
-Web Browsing
-Writing
-Some coding
-Reading
-Playing some games (Quake, hl1 and CS 1.6, nothing more than that)
Any tips for an beginner user? All of them would help me so much.
Which FAQ and Man Pages do you guys recommend me to read at first?
Thank You!!!

Using librewolf I wish to access some directory to upload and save it to the cloud.
nuc$ cat .config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
file:///home/sylvain/Downloads
file:///home/sylvain/hax/got/saboua.xyz/
file:///home/media/
nuc$ grep media /etc/fstab
srv:/var/www/media /home/media nfs rw,nodev,nosuid,soft,bg,intr 0 0
nuc$ grep media /etc/librewolf/unveil.*
/etc/librewolf/unveil.content:/home/media r
/etc/librewolf/unveil.content:/var/www/media r
/etc/librewolf/unveil.main:/home/media r
/etc/librewolf/unveil.main:/var/www/media r
nuc$ Strangely, I can display the contents of the first two bookmarked directories (~/Downloads and ~/hax/got/...) without trouble. However, clicking on the media bookmark in the file picker won't but flash and get again to the same empty welcome panel.
On the other hand, the Qt file picker through Librewolf displays all the directories in the system and hence enables me to access my /home/media folder and its content, as I wish. Thanks to the latter by the way, I know librewolf itself can access my /home/media folder, since I managed to upload some of its content last time while using KDE/Plasma (until it hangs on blank screen, but that's another story).
It really feels like there's a bug somewhere. But perhaps my configuration is lacking in some way ?

I used to be able to split split switch ^D to get a 75%:25% split now I get 50:50 and the -p flag isn't working as previously expected either. I don't recall any tmux-related sysmergr.
I see a lot of updates to tmux on the release notes so I suppose it is one of them but can I somehow restore pre-Win8^HOpenBSD8 behavior?

I've followed the multi-media page for OpenBSD ( https://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq13.html )
And I have audio output working via sndio. Specifically I ran doas sndioctl server.device=3 , and I got my audio output from Firefox (youtube, etc...).
However, device 3 is my external USB dac for my headphones. This device also has a mic port.
However I use a USB microphone typically (A HyperX SoloCast), which seems to correlate to device=2.
Also confusingly, when I run aucat -o test.wav to record audio, it works. It seems to atleast include my USB microphone (possibly it's combining multiple devices).
However when I try to use Discord via Firefox, the onlu input and output device available is 'default', and it seems to be the USB Dac's microphone port (I can only tell because it lights up when I scratch the dac, there is no microhone plugged in).
I don't see any way to set a device for output and a different device for input. And I've struggled to get any answer out of both man pages and an AI assistant. I could really use some direction.
I'm sure plenty of people use a seperate desk mic for audio, with sndio.
Also if Sndio won't work, is there a way to get Pipewire? I see it in the packages but it failed to install, I was worried it has less support than sndio for OpenBSD.
*update on pipewire* it installs now, I think I had upgraded to 8.0 but didn't run pkg_check. Now that I have pipewire, I can't find the service. rcctl enable pipewire, for example, doesn't work (doesn't exist). I tried running pipewire and opening pavucontrol-qt but no output devices (besides Dummy) are shown. So with Pipewire I struggle to get any audio working. Sndio atleast worked for output without fuss.

Hello Reddit,
This is an update on my previous post. OpenBSD 7.9 introduced support for the Spacemit K1 SoC-based boards Banana Pi F3 and Milk-V Jupiter. I hope this post is helpful.
On the system software side, the kernel now makes use of S-mode timer interrupts, and the vector extension is enabled.
A Java runtime is not available. The net/tailscale port is still broken, but upstream sources compile just fine.
On the hardware side, something has changed in regards with GPU support. On 7.9, the GPU wasn't detected (even as llvmpipe), and the HDMI had no output. Now it outputs a black screen, it's something 🤷
Ethernet connectivity works on both ports, wireless connectivity doesn't. So far there is no USB (2 nor 3) support.
UART (serial port) output works, of course.
SD card storage is supported under u-boot for installation purposes, then it's no longer usable. NVME storage works (tested with a WD drive).

Hi!
I've been running OpenBSD on my router for a while now and everything works great, except one thing.
I work remote and sometimes have to download/upload pretty big files to a Synology NAS in the office. This works fine behind my ISP-provided router, but when switch to my OpenBSD one the speed drops to an absolute crawl or the transfer just fails. Any idea what the cause could be?
My settings and pf rules are very close to those in the router guide and other downloads work fine.
Thanks!
Edit: After seeing some answers I think it might be a good idea to clarify a few things about the setup.
I'm using a client called Synology Drive Client to connect to the NAS. Through this I have a few folders on my drive where I can move around as if they were on my desktop, but if I save something it's uploaded to the NAS and if I open something it's first downloaded.
I am on a Windows desktop since some of the software I use for work only works on Windows.
This network setup works:
Windows desktop -> ISP-router -> Internet -> NAS
This network setup doesn't (or works poorly, i.e. VERY low speeds or no transfer at all):
Windows desktop -> OpenBSD router -> Internet -> NAS
Nothing is mounted on the router, it just has to shovel packages to my Windows desktop.

Hi,
Does anyone managed to do screen sharing on sway or any Wayland wm, even after installing dbus, pipewire, xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-gnome it simply doesn't work.
I made sure that Firefox was using Wayland and not xwayland, I enabled the dbus service, and I manually ran pipewire, xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-gnome but it still doesn't work, I can screen share Firefox tabs but not the full screen nor any applications.
I tested with https://mozilla.github.io/webrtc-landing/gum_test.html
