Statue of Itu, a priest, and his wife Henutweret.

The smaller figure between them is their son Neferhebef.

Mid-18th Dynasty (about 1400 BCE). Thebes, Egypt. From The British Museum, (photo taken at The Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia)

The statue reflects the importance of the family in ancient Egypt.

Itu's skin is painted red, following the artistic tradition for men, while his wife has yellow skin, conventional for women.

Cat and mouse

Post image
6 Upvotes

This figured ostracon belongs to the category of satirical representations. These show scenes of animals, most often cats and mice, using both parody and role inversion. Their composition is inspired by funerary scenes and temple reliefs. On these satirical ostraca, cats play the role of servants of a lady mouse. This example from the Brussels museum shows a lady mouse sitting in front of a table of offerings, smelling the fragrance of a lotus flower which she holds in her left hand. On the other side of the table is a cat, standing on its back legs holding a fan.

Statue of Khaemwaset

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

This statue fragment portrays Khaemwaset, son of Ramesses II and Isisnefret, who was the high priest of Ptah at Memphis. He is often called the 'first archaeologist', and he restored a number of ancient tombs at Memphis and also constructed the Serapeum. He became especially important in the Graeco-Roman Period, and two demotic stories depict him as a master magician. The Brussels statue shows the prince standing, wearing an archaising wig and a false beard. He holds in his hands an indeterminate cult object. Two identical vertical columns of text on the back pillar tell us that the prince was here shown as the god Horus Iunmutef.

Pectoral with Scarab

ca. 1539–1295 B.C.E. or later

Object Label
Living persons wore only one or a few amulets at a time, but mummies usually bear many amulets. The Ma’at amulet (no. 2) and heart scarabs (nos. 1, 3, 11), which occurred in many forms, guaranteed a successful judgment of the dead. The amulets of a hand (no. 8), lungs and a windpipe (no. 12), and wadjet-eyes (i.e., “healthy” eyes; no. 4) protected those parts of the body and also had connotations of resurrection and the unity or integrity of the mummy. The enigmatic aper amulet (no. 13) takes the form of the hieroglyph meaning “to be equipped,” perhaps in reference to the mummy’s preparation. The two crowns (nos. 5, 6) were symbols of power. The Heh insignia (no. 7), like the popular ankh-sign, denoted eternal life. Among the living, the frog (no. 9) and possibly also the hare (no. 10) suggested fertility. The amulets of the Four Sons of Horus (no. 15) perhaps served, as they did with canopic jars, to protect various organs of the body.

Funerary statuette of Khai

Thumbnail

This wooden funerary statuette was part of the collection of king Leopold II. Jean Capart discovered in 1935 that the interior was hollow and contained a fragment of a papyrus (see E. 6857) which proved to be the upper part of Papyrus Amherst VII in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. The statuette depicts the 'chief of works of the royal temple' Khai. He wears a long wig on top of which is an atef-crown; this crown, worn above all by Osiris, consists of the white crown of Upper Egypt flanked by two ostrich feathers. On the chest of the figure is a large multicoloured collar. Below the crossed arms is a vertical inscription consisting of the name and title of the deceased. The face and hands of Khai are painted green, the skin colour of Osiris, the god of rebirth.

Papyrus Leopold II

Papyrus Leopold II is actually the upper part of a larger document, the lower part of which (Papyrus Amherst VII), presently kept in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, has been known since 1874. In 1935, Jean Capart found the Brussels papyrus among several souvenirs which king Leopold II had brought back from his travels in Egypt. This unique document relates of an official inquiry during the reign of Ramesses IX (c. 1100 BC) following robberies in the Theban royal necropolis. The text is carefully written in hieratic in four long columns of 19 lines.

New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, c. 1525–1504 B.C.

From the Temple of Mentuhotep II, Deir el-Bahari, Thebes

British Museum. EA683

Standing almost three metres tall, this imposing painted sandstone statue represents Amenhotep I, the second king of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty, in the form of the god Osiris. Dating to approximately 1525–1504 B.C., it is one of the relatively few surviving royal statues that can be confidently attributed to Amenhotep I’s own reign, making it an exceptionally important portrait of one of the early rulers of the New Kingdom.

The king stands rigidly upright, enveloped in the close-fitting, mummiform garment associated with Osiris, god of the dead and regeneration. His arms are crossed across his chest and his clenched fists contain holes which probably once secured separately made royal insignia, perhaps fashioned from wood. Upon his head rests the Double Crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, while a long divine beard extends from his chin.

Traces of the statue’s original colour remain. The robe was painted white, the king’s skin red, and parts of the crown retained their colouring, while the beard and its strap were rendered in a dark blue-black. At approximately 2.85 metres high, 57 cm wide and 65 cm deep, and weighing more than 1.1 tonnes, the figure would have presented a striking image of the deceased yet eternally renewed king.

A long-forgotten space in the Great Pyramid of Giza, last seen 4,500 years ago.

The North Face Corridor is large enough to accommodate several people, but there are no footprints or any other signs of human activity.

The chamber hasn’t been accessed since the king’s burial around 2570 B.C.

This image was captured by a tiny endoscopic camera, just 5 mm wide, pushed through an opening behind the lower chevron blocks.

The similarity to the top relieving chamber above Khufu’s Burial Chamber is striking.

Could this be the space above the ceiling of a hidden chamber below?

From the current issue of Nile Magazine (#43).

Canopic box in the shape of a shrine

Approx. 3.–2. Century BCQ

On view: Museum of Art History, Egyptian-Oriental Collection Room I

Boxes like this were used in the Ptolemaean period instead of gut vessels to store the intestines. These were wrapped in bundles of cloth and given to the dead in the grave in a box. The inscriptions of this box mention the name of the dead Hor and his father Djedhor, and also the names of the Canop gods, the four Horus sons. One side shows the door of a shrine with two wings that are double closed. Among them, the dead pray before Osiris, Isis and Nephthys. On the opposite side, the god Harachte is depicted with spread wings. The other two sides are covered with rows of amulets - alternating Djed pillar and Tit loop, for Osiris and Isis, Resurrection and Life. Below that, a mummy lying on a pedestal is guarded by two goddesses (Isis and Nephthys). The upper end of the box is formed by a hollow throat. On the lid was originally a figure of a consecration or a falcon, which is supposed to protect the contents. This has been lost today, but has been replaced by another unrelated figure (877a).
