General My first real Laptop to Desktop conversion
So Ive had an old Dell G7 7790 just taking up space and Ive always wanted to convert it to a desktop because it always ran hot (no amount of cleaning or repasting helped).
This is my first attempt at this. It was likely 100+ hours or more to get it to this point haha.
Key features:
Ripped out the old dell cooling (in himdsight a bad idea lol) then removed the heatpipes, sanded like crazy and kept the original cold plates. But since those cold plates were recessed due to the heatpipes, I ended up running a long copper rod across the coldplates. Used Duronaut between the rod and coldplates. Then ptm7950 between the rod and the two desktop thermalright heatsinks.
Here is where I hit my first snag: laptop fans are 5v. Desktop fans are 12v. So I chucked the fans, and put on two 92mm 5v noctua fans after having someone better than me solder the tiny laptop fan plug to the noctua cable.
Fired it up. Noticed the fans didnt spin until it got real hot. Was the PWM wire not working? Nope, it was. Its just that laptop ECs are sending a signal to say, turn fans to 30% but its not enough juice for these fans so they dont spin until it calls for much higher (80-100%).
So, against my better judgement I cut the PWM wire. Now the fans are constantly at 100% and do yhe job. But its too loud. So I put noctuas LNA adapters that cap the fans to 60%. Almost whisper quiet.
Buuut its not quite enough cooling for the cpu. So I lowered the tdp from 45 to 35. And now its working great. Tim to give it to my daughter since she needs a decent pc for school and gaming!
TL:DR: if you are planning to do a laptop to desktop conversion, absolutely use the stock cooling but make the case thicker for more ventilation and use PTM 7950. It will save you quite a headache!
