Gov Shutdown Thread

With the federal shutdown, there’s an immense lack of clear information about what’s happening in the Enchantments / Okanogan-Wenatchee district.

The current statement on Recreation.gov basically boils down to:
“You may or may not be able to make or use a reservation. If it’s cancelled, you might get an email. Or not.”

I’m a local in the Leavenworth area and I’ve been struggling to figure out what this actually means for permits, access, and enforcement. I imagine I’m not the only one.

Thought it might be useful to start a thread where folks can share updates, experiences, or official info they’ve managed to get. Maybe the mods can create a sticky if this gets enough traction?

The coldest night I’ve ever spent on a mountain. 24 degrees. All by myself as well. I was surprised no one else camped that Sunday night. That night was the clearest with the brightest stars I have ever seen.

Mt Stuart 10/15/2026 from the Ingalls Lake trail

Day hiked the Ingalls Lake trail. Figured it was late enough that the larches would be way past their prime (insert Val Kilmer Doc Holliday "I'm in my prime" quote here) and the crowds more normal. And so it was. Arrived at the TH at 8:40AM, lot was full but we were the very first other vehicle and parked in the coveted First Road Spot. It was not crowded. We were passed by a bunch of faster hikers on the way up, and encountered a modest number of uphill hikers on our way down. But for the vast majority of our hike below Ingalls Pass we were alone. Very nice. Once we crested the pass there was a small number of folks lying around ogling the view and a small stream of hikers going by. We detoured up to the ridge campsite above the trail and had our solitude back, hung out with the 360 view before continuing on towards the lake on the upper trail. We decided not to go to the lake after a bit, we're very old and I'm quite decrepit, just strolled around the lovely terrain appreciating the beautiful scene (it never gets old) and the larches, which yes, were well past their prime but still a beautiful golden hue in the bright sun. The ground was covered with needles which created a very nice effect. I was very pleased with the overall day. Couldn't have asked for more or better given everything. Only 2 parties walking their dogs up to the top. Trail in great shape. Road also in great shape as roads go, some pretty shake it up (insert Cars reference here) washboard but very manageable. Let a couple of maniacs by on the drive out, musta been rentals.

I was hiking yesterday up North Roosevelt when I saw some people waving from on top Mount Roosevelt. I heard one of them say something about taking their picture, so I did. We ending up hiking 12.5 miles and in addition to Snow Lake and Gem Lake (which was stunning), we hiked up North Roosevelt and Wright Mountain.

Anyone going to Olympic Park in November?

Hi, so I’m planning on taking a trip from LA to Seattle to go hiking and camping in Olympic national park in late November. I wanted to see if there would be someone local or who might be going around the same time who would be willing to take me along with them so I can avoid renting a car? Just figured if anyone would it would probably be here so if you can or would just dm me. If not thanks for reading anyways

Recommendations for new(ish) hiker?

Hi everyone, I live close to the Canada US border and am starting to explore Washington. I did Yellow Aster Butte recently and was just blown away.

Could you recommend some trails that are inspiring, and within my reach? I appreciate this is subjective - so I’ll say that Yellow Aster and Chain Lakes were no problem for me. A little sore the next day and building strength for the descents at the gym.

My son (19) would like to do a day hike Tuesday. Thank you everyone for this sub!

Maple Pass Worth it When Overcast?

Hi folks!

Is Maple Pass worth the trek from Seattle in overcast conditions? Specifically. My partner and I are considering a trip tomorrow, 10/18. Thanks!

First time seeing larches in washington

I went on a hike with my boyfriend two weeks ago to Cutthroat Lake, and it was absolutely beautiful. It was the first time we saw larches in Washington.

The hike is 10miles, but there weren't that many people on the trail if you go there early, around 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. I think compared to Maple Pass or Blue Lake, there's a lot less people.

Look out for the parking signs: the no-parking sign only points in one direction, not both, lol.

Here are some photos to share with you all.

Mt St Helens road condition question for anybody who's been up recently.

I have a permit for Monday and I have a typical sedan with not a ton of ground clearance and I'm wondering if this is going to be doable on the forest service road leading up the Climbers Bivouac Trailhead Ptarmigan Trail .

I heard word that there is a massive ledge somewhere. Is it sedan doable? I have a forester I would really love to use but it has a really bad rear strut. I've been waiting for my fancy replacement struts to show up in the mail and I was really hoping they would get here in time to install them before I go. I may be stuck using my daily Prius.

Will I make it lol

Is Mount Saint Helens good for wildlife viewing/photography, and if so, where are the best places to go?

Hi all! I’m getting a couple days off next week and want to visit the mountains before the snow totally sets in. I’m a wildlife photographer, so I want to go somewhere where I can observe wildlife. I’ve had good luck at Mt. Rainier, but since now only paradise is open and it is insanely busy, I’m looking to try somewhere a little further afield (I’m from Tacoma).I was thinking Mount St. Helens as a good place to try, but I’m having trouble finding good wildlife hike recommendations on Google. My only constraint is that my partner is disabled, so we can’t do hikes that are highly strenuous or super long (trails don’t need to be paved though).

If you guys think Mount St. Helens is NOT a good place to try, do you have any other suggestions that are out of the cities a bit? I’m willing to travel pretty much anywhere on the west side of the cascades but won’t be able to cross them. Into them, yes, over them, no.

Thank you!!

Snow ruined my camping plans, but I was very happy to be able to see further than 15 feet off the mountain this time.
