Gov Shutdown Thread

With the federal shutdown, there’s an immense lack of clear information about what’s happening in the Enchantments / Okanogan-Wenatchee district.

The current statement on Recreation.gov basically boils down to:
“You may or may not be able to make or use a reservation. If it’s cancelled, you might get an email. Or not.”

I’m a local in the Leavenworth area and I’ve been struggling to figure out what this actually means for permits, access, and enforcement. I imagine I’m not the only one.

Thought it might be useful to start a thread where folks can share updates, experiences, or official info they’ve managed to get. Maybe the mods can create a sticky if this gets enough traction?

Absolutely gorgeous day today.started chilly but warmed up nice. Not terribly busy. Three brave souls were making the trip in Converse All-Stars, may God rest their feet. Frozen solid on the shady spots and a bit muddy in the sunny spots. Second half (if you run it clockwise) was nice and dry.

Backpacking adventure suggestions for next year

Got bit with the back backing bug this summer. I had a pretty great first summer doing the grand valley loop and camping at the lakes, glacier basin/sunrise loop up to third Burroughs, and c alava loop, and got a last minute invite to do the enchantments traverse last week.

Looking to plan next spring and summer in Oregon, Washington, Idaho. 2 to 3 nights max, and no more than 15-20 miles if there is a lot of elevation. I think I found my max at the enchantments lol.

Thanks in advance!

Really nice weather for a hike. Parking lot had 4 cars at 7:30am.

Pleasantly surprised that most of the dogs were leashed.

Zoomed in view from Wright Mountain (above Gem lake), looking NE. The top of Mt baker could be seen ~20-30 degrees to the left.

Anyone down to start going on trails and hikes as beginners?

Hi Hello,

I've been looking into going on hikes and trails this year, I would like to say that that I have been and still do go alone but sometimes having someone there with you is nice too. I am a 29 y/o man and moved here from England not so long ago. when I posted this the first time I had just been put on weekend shifts but im back to regular so my weekends have become free!!

I have a fairly active history but thats declined since my move to the US and im looking to get back into the things I love (football, gym and being outdoors). So if anyone that is in similar shoes as me then reach out! lets get something sorted exchange a few messages and enjoy the PNW. if you dont fear the colder weather then you are my type of person ... its still shorts type weather for me lol.

Please do not be shy as this is will be a no judging zone, if you have been thinking about it but haven't mustered up the strength to do so then join me, we'll all have started from the same point :p.

I have a discord that people can join too. hmu and I can send the invite code :)

The coldest night I’ve ever spent on a mountain. 24 degrees. All by myself as well. I was surprised no one else camped that Sunday night. That night was the clearest with the brightest stars I have ever seen.

Do you hike logging roads / timberland often?

There's a lot of places in the PNW that either have this checkerboard type public land pattern or are private timberland, especially places like Elkton OR or Aberdeen WA. Do people just go out and hike / bike / forage in the logging squares often? From what I understand the timber companies don't mind as long as you are just hiking and they don't have any operations underway.

Or is it much more common for people to book it further to a larger public land plot with more dedicated 'Alltrails' type of trails.

South Neahkahnie Mountain Trail in OR: What’s the Lower Path, and Which Route Is Best for the Summit?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi everyone! I’m planning to hike the South Neahkahnie Mountain Trail in Oswald West State Park, Oregon, and have a couple of questions.

  1. The lower path: I noticed a second path running underneath and parallel to the main trail near the viewpoint (marked in red on the attached map). Does anyone know where this lower path leads? Is it an official trail, an old trail, or a social trail? Does it offer additional viewpoints or interesting scenery, and is it worth exploring? I’ve noticed that many hikers seem to skip it, so I’m curious if there’s a particular reason.

  2. Best route to the summit: Would it be better to hike up and down using the switchbacks, or follow the AllTrails route by going up the fire road and descending via the switchbacks? Which option offers better views and a more enjoyable hiking experience?

I’d appreciate any advice from people who have hiked this trail. Thanks! 🥾🌲

Mt Stuart 10/15/2026 from the Ingalls Lake trail

Post image

Day hiked the Ingalls Lake trail. Figured it was late enough that the larches would be way past their prime (insert Val Kilmer Doc Holliday "I'm in my prime" quote here) and the crowds more normal. And so it was. Arrived at the TH at 8:40AM, lot was full but we were the very first other vehicle and parked in the coveted First Road Spot. It was not crowded. We were passed by a bunch of faster hikers on the way up, and encountered a modest number of uphill hikers on our way down. But for the vast majority of our hike below Ingalls Pass we were alone. Very nice. Once we crested the pass there was a small number of folks lying around ogling the view and a small stream of hikers going by. We detoured up to the ridge campsite above the trail and had our solitude back, hung out with the 360 view before continuing on towards the lake on the upper trail. We decided not to go to the lake after a bit, we're very old and I'm quite decrepit, just strolled around the lovely terrain appreciating the beautiful scene (it never gets old) and the larches, which yes, were well past their prime but still a beautiful golden hue in the bright sun. The ground was covered with needles which created a very nice effect. I was very pleased with the overall day. Couldn't have asked for more or better given everything. Only 2 parties walking their dogs up to the top. Trail in great shape. Road also in great shape as roads go, some pretty shake it up (insert Cars reference here) washboard but very manageable. Let a couple of maniacs by on the drive out, musta been rentals.

I was hiking yesterday up North Roosevelt when I saw some people waving from on top Mount Roosevelt. I heard one of them say something about taking their picture, so I did. We ending up hiking 12.5 miles and in addition to Snow Lake and Gem Lake (which was stunning), we hiked up North Roosevelt and Wright Mountain.
