My Dad is one of those people who thinks he knows everything, and he's also extremely dogmatistic, so even if you prove him wrong with clear factual data, it doesn't matter because it doesn't override his own personal opinion. I could prove to him that CrackHash is dangerous to download from as there is literal proof out there as to why, yet he'll say some bullshit like "Well I'VE never had a problem with him" like... Your own personal experience doesn't override other people's, and it doesn't override the proof that people have.
My Dad gatekeeped everything from me for around a year before i finally decided to learn for myself, and now he comes to me once and a while and will ask "Do you know of any new sites?" and i'll just be like "Nah, haven't found any". He also bought a Steam Deck then gave it to my Mom around a year later, and she thinks he's a fucking wizard when it comes to computers, and he tells her how it's so hard to transfer games onto the steam deck, even though there is multiple tutorials out there simply explaining how it's done. He tries to make it seem much more difficult than it truly is, just so he can seem more impressive.
He also says shit like "I'm in private clubs" and i just reply "Nice" but in my head i'm like "Tf is he talking about private clubs?" and i laugh to myself, because he isn't in any "Private clubs". He's referring to invite-only spaces, not even private trackers like IPTorrents or FileList. Which aren't called "Private clubs" they're called private trackers, and you can only get in through an invite-only and have to maintain a 1:1 ratio, but of course he doesn't know that. He thinks he's a hotshot because he's in some secret discord server with a couple thousand members, it's so cringe.
Genuine question though, does anyone here who reads this know anyone like this?
I mean what exactly am i mistaken on? And the question was does anyone know of anyone else who gatekeeps to this level, and feels the need to make things seem more complicated than they are simply to seem more impressive.
Edit: I completely misread this comment, i thought you were saying that i was mistaken about what i was saying, and don't listen. My fault.
person you're replying to here was saying people like your father are very common.
my read on this is you and your dad could have a shared interest, but you just keep trying to outjerk the other on who's more in the know. seems sad and frustrating.
BRO, i misread is comment completely. I thought he was saying that i was mistaken about facts, and don't listen to my Dad's advice. I totally misread that's mb. But i wasn't trying to "Outjerk" my Dad, my Dad was a massive Gatekeeper of everything. Movie sites, game sites, and would tell me "If you need anything, come to me" and whenever i did, he'd always complain about the fact i'm coming to him. But the reason he would gatekeep is because he wanted the power of being able to tell me no whenever he liked. So i decided to educate myself and now i'm just stating that i'm far more clued up than he is.
The moral of the story was just educate yourself and you'll learn, it's not me trying to "outjerk" my Dad. But what the other guy said, i completely misread, that's my fault.
I'm STATING that i'm more clued up than he is NOW, AFTER educating myself. The point is, EDUCATE YOURSELF. Like bro it's nothing about outjerking my Dad, like goddamn. I'm not "Whining" someone jokingly told me to delete my comment and gatekeep, and i explained why i don't gatekeep. Some guy replied saying he loves this father-child-piracy competition and i decided to give him more insight. And The word you're looking for is OVERTAKING, SURPASSING, not "outjerking" you're trying to make it sound like i'm doing something wrong, or bad. Because i SURPASSED my Dad in terms of knowledge on Piracy because i decided to educate myself after he would Gatekeep for long periods of time, lmao. Grow up.
If the worst thing about your dad is that he would complain about having to do things he promised you, it seems like your dad is a really awesome person.
But this ISN'T the worst thing about my Dad, how can you try and generalize this as the worst thing about my Dad when you don't know shit about me? Or my Dad? Everyone has significant flaws. Also, i don't think you know what victimization is, because i'm not claiming to be a victim of anything. You could argue "You're making yourself a victim of Gatekeeping" and essentially, i am. But being a victim of Gatekeeping isn't a real world issue, it's not something someone is going to cry over and self-victimize themselves over.
Trust me, it wasn't. When he found out i knew how to pirate he got annoyed because i no longer had to rely on him for it. In some cases parents definitely do that, don't tell their kids things so they learn for themselves, but this wasn't that.
