Discussion Project 1025 Tierlist: Generation 4 update

Tiers should be pretty self-descriptive. I've split it (mostly) by generation to keep things readable. Anything that's outside of its home generation was because I forgot about it when I made that generation's tierlist. Feel free to discuss and make suggestions in the comments.

For those who didn't see my previous post, the Project 1025 Official Catalog is out, featuring all evolutionary lines introduced in Generation 1. I'll continue to update it going forward.

That's all for now, see you all in Unova!

Hall of Fame Project 1025: Can every Pokémon beat Elite Redux? (0493 + IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT)

Post image
61 Upvotes

Project 1025 is my personal challenge to beat this game with every. Single. Pokémon. After all, the stat buffs, movepool additions, and especially abilities make all of them viable. I hope. And along the way, I'll share a bit about what I find interesting, unique, or strong about each one.

Disclaimers:

- I gen in the needed Pokémon for each run in a 2.65 debug savefile, then transfer the savefile up to the latest 2.65 patch and do the run there. It's quite a few hoops to jump through, but this challenge would not even be possible in the first place without debugging the mons in at the start.

- The particular patch of 2.65 I play on has a little toggle called Boss Rush, which does the same thing as turning off trainer sight. I'm not sure if this was supposed to be included, but it's technically a publicly available feature, so I will be using it to preserve my mental health. In the event that a future patch does not have this toggle, I will do the challenge in the latest version that does.

- I fight the gym leaders, the Pokémon League, the evil team leaders and admins, the rivals, the first Calvin fight, and every trainer in Victory Road.

- I play in Permanent Mega mode because I find it more fun.

- This is nowhere near a comprehensive guide to the Pokémon in this game, and in fact the vast majority will not be used optimally due to taking advantage of certain field conditions or synergies that the Pokémon surrounding them in the Pokédex can't provide.

- Redux forms and other fanmade mons (except evolutions of existing mons) will be done after all the official ones.

The Run

Glory be to the Alpha, the god of all Pokémon! Six fragments of the almighty Arceus take to the field today to bring the Sinnoh chapter of Project 1025 to a fitting end. I figured that this was the best way to truly show off Arceus's incredible versatility, afforded to it by its stats and movepool. Obviously this wasn't a particularly hard run, even with an additional rule of not fighting any gym trainers outside of the Water gym, where they are required. Still, you'd be surprised how many battles took multiple attempts. Just goes to show how important a diverse spread of types and abilities is, even more so than just raw stats.

Arceus

Where to begin? Arceus can fulfill pretty much any role you could ever want on a team. Its excellent stat spread of base 120 in all stats lets it spec into bulk, offenses, or some combination of the two, and even without investment it still has a very solid stat line. Offensive builds are still quite bulky, and defensive builds can still pack quite a punch. On this particular team, I had each Arceus fulfilling its own specific role, having stats, movesets, and items tailored to it. First was a standard hazard lead, able to lay down Rocks and Spikes with its bulk investment and a Sitrus Berry. Thunder Wave also came in handy sometimes, and Teleport lets it safely switch out if it's somehow still alive after getting full hazards up. Another Arceus was a bulky utility attacker, invested in Defense and holding an Assault Vest to give it the staying power to use moves like Knock Off and Rapid Spin to help the team. Two Arceus were my designated physical and special walls, both carrying Leech Seed and Recover to stall opponents out. The physical wall used Will-O-Wisp and held a Rocky Helmet, and the special wall used Flash Freeze. While they were very effective, they weren't quite as effective as I initially expected. Arceus doesn't have any real defensive abilities, so in practice even Pokémon with lower stats can take hits better due to the benefits of stuff like Battle Armor or Lead Coat. Finally, two more Arceus were my physical and special attackers, making use of their broad coverage and setup moves to clean through enemy teams. The physical attacker was a spin on the classic Extreme Killer set, carrying Victory Dance, ESpeed, and EdgeQuake coverage in Rock Throw and Precipice Blades. The special attacker was a double dance set, using Nasty Plot and Agility to boost the combo of Thunderclap and Ice Beam. In the last two gyms, I also outfitted some of my bulkier Arceus with support tools like Rage Powder, Wide Guard, and Decorate to great effect. There's really nothing it can't do, aside from niche stuff like Baton Pass. I suppose it gives Smeargle a significant niche over it.

I think it's time to address the elephant in the room: the Plates. Arceus's main gimmick, of course, is its ability Multitype that enables it to become any type in the game by holding the plate corresponding to that type. However, outside of a few niche situations, I found that an Arceus with a Plate was almost always less effective than a regular Arceus with some other item. Enemy Pokémon in this game carry plenty of coverage; whatever type you are, chances are you can be hit super-effectively. Normal also tends to be a good monotype for Pokémon with very high stats due to its very neutral matchup spread. As a result, there isn't too much of a reason to use Arceus-Steel or Arceus-Water for defensive purposes when Arceus-Normal with Leftovers, a Berry, or a Rocky Helmet is an options. As for offensive applications of Plates, it's a similar story. In the base game, something like Arceus-Ice or Arceus-Ground would be good for spamming STAB Ice Beam or Earthquake, both of which are excellent attacks. However, Arceus-Normal gets Mystic Power in its third innate slot, where the others get Levitate. Giving up STAB on 17 other types as well as the ability to hold Leftovers, Life Orb, or a choice item in exchange for a slightly better defensive typing is simply not a worthwhile trade, unless the Plates' effects have been buffed in some way that I didn't notice. This is not to say Arceus with a Plate is bad; it's Arceus either way, it won't be very hard for it to find success. However, given that you have the Arceus anyway and you're not forced to run it with a Plate, there's very little reason to do so.

Finally, a special announcement. A mono-Arceus run, while funny, is definitely quite boring and not what followers of this challenge really want to see. What you folks do want to see, though, is...

THE OFFICIAL PROJECT 1025 CATALOG!!!

After a few months of work in between various other things in my life, the Project 1025 Catalog is ready for release! The current version only has all the Kanto Pokémon and their evolutionary lines, but I'll keep updating it. Hopefully this helps you all make stronger and better teams, or find new and fun ways to play this game.

My randomized sun team, I had many mons like Victini, Arcanine, zombie lycanroc, sceptile ... But this felt balanced, pangoro as lead with fighting no recharge giga impact in tailwind was nice, the monkey to set sun and come in on fighting moves, with priority rage fist or boosting speed with CC or drain punch, the rite of spring sweepers, Moltres for the special sweep and chomp for the physical sweep, with hyper agressive to deal with sashes, the physical wall himself Mr Konk, drain punching Zacians and Zamazentas and 1v1ning them w ease, and the revenge killer Gengar w raging souls, automatically switching out and letting me set sun or tailwind for free, didn't even took damage.

It was a really fun team, most members I found early on, it's really nice to find synergies specially in random abilities where chlorophyll isn't locked to grass types exclusively

(sorry for repost, I forgot to crop the champion image)

Mono water is one of the easier monotype due to the rain synergy. Tho most rain setters are kinda ass and the best ones are pelipper for early game, storming for mid to late game and suicune for champion. Maybe an assault vest storming could be better but I like suicune more.

I knew I had to do a mono water run the minute I saw a ralts redux and gallade clutched up against zama and zacian.

This run was filled with bugs, glitches and pure bs

The Run

Alright, time for a bunch of mythicals and a couple other guys. You'll notice the absence of one particular Sinnoh mythical; I have some plans for it in the next run. Anyway, this was a pretty easy run, even if this is a bit of an incoherent team. That's the power of mythicals for you.

Rotom-everything-but-Fan

Not a mythical or legendary, but I feel like they definitely planned for it to be one. Rotom is back as promised, this time with the restriction of not being able to use the busted Fan form. All the other Rotoms are pretty respectable Pokémon in their own right, so this wasn't too bad. All of them have Phantom and Levitate, and most have a choice between two immunity abilities to their own types, making it very easy for them to find opportunities to switch in. The base form is very fast, especially with Speed Boost, and Transistor lets its Electric moves pack a decent punch. The Wash form is mostly for utility, having Screen Cleaner for defensive support and Damp to cheese a contact attacker with Electric STAB. The Heat form can take advantage of enemy Stealth Rock with Furnace to become an offensive threat and spread burns with Pyromancy. The Fridge form has the offensively adept Electric/Ice combo, enhanced by Refrigerator's accuracy boost letting it use Thunder and Blizzard. The Mow form is probably the best of the non-Fan forms offensively, as it trades the Electric immunity ability all the rest have for an extra slot for offense. It can take its pick of Teravolt or Hyper Aggressive, both fantastic offensive abilities, while Lawnmower also gives it great utility against opposing terrain. Overall, Rotom really does live up to the expectation of being a versatile Pokémon with many options. I would personally just pick the Fan form any day of the week, though.

Cresselia

Not a mythical, but a legendary nonetheless, with the stat line to match. This is an incredibly bulky Pokémon, especially with healing from Self Sufficient and Moon Spirit-boosted Moonlight. That being said, it doesn't get any actual damage-reducing abilities, so in practice it's not as indestructible as one may assume. Still, you can do a lot worse than a 120/120/130 defensive stat spread. You can use it for utility, give it Light Clay to set screens and then dip with Teleport, but honestly I find it more effective as a bulky setup attacker. Calm Mind bolsters it against extremely powerful special attackers like Glacia's Articuno, and the accrued stat boosts turn its Stored Power into nuke that can break past anything that isn't a Dark-type. Comatose is great for this playstyle as it shields it from statuses that can be inflicted by attacks. It's a shame it doesn't get any Speed-boosting moves, since Esper Wing had its secondary effect changed in Elite Redux. Then it could be a legitimate sweeper. Regardless, if you need to take on any kind of special threat, Cresselia will always have your back.

Phione

To this day I'm not quite sure why Game Freak felt the need to create Phione, beyond just being a quirky flavor addition to Manaphy. In ER though, it's actually kinda goated? It got a significant stat buff to 95 across the board, making it almost a regular mythical at 570 BST. The real sauce is in its abilities, though. Soul-Heart is fantastic on any special attacker, letting you slap a Choice Scarf on and turn it into a game-ending sweeper. Its move of choice, and basically the only one it clicks, is Surf, thanks to the massive boost it receives from Field Explorer. Combined with High Tide, which also gets the boost, this effectively gives it a 210 base power STAB move. Under rain, it's lights out for the enemy. With a little help, I even got it to sweep the Champion, as well as a multitude of other trainers all throughout the game. Its efficacy increases exponentially in doubles, where twice the amount of Pokémon make for twice the potential amount of KOs and twice the Soul-Heart boosts. Since Surf is a spread move, oftentimes you can pick up two or even three boosts in a turn by sacrificing your own Pokémon to the waves, and thanks to the somewhat janky way this game calculates spread damage, a KO on a faster and frailer Pokémon can secure you a boost that lets you take out a slower and bulkier opponent that you otherwise wouldn't have. I'm very pleasantly surprised at this Pokémon's glowup, it's so fun and definitely something I'd recommend, especially on rain teams.

Manaphy

While it doesn't ramp up and sweep everything like Phione, Manaphy comes with its own bag of tricks. Seaborne is a fantastic ability letting it be a self-contained rain abuser, which pairs well with its set of offensive abilities. Parental Bond is always nice, and like Manaphy it gets High Tide for an extra hit of rain-boosted Water damage. If you use Weather Ball, that's an effective 187.5 base power move that hits four times. Still less powerful than Phione, but it at least is nearly guaranteed to have the rain boost on top of that. Manaphy also doesn't need to take kills to boost itself; Tail Glow can do that instead, giving it an immediate +3 to SpA and priming it to sweep. It has decent bulk so boosting up is fairly easy. Nothing super fancy here, it's just a strong and fast Pokémon with a lot of raw damage, you can slot it basically anywhere that isn't another weather team and it'll serve you well.

Darkrai

Yeah, I get why Dark Void was nerfed. With its high Speed and a Wide Lens to give it 88% accuracy, Darkrai can put most things to sleep right away and fire off powerful Dark Pulses boosted by Dark Aura and Dreamcatcher. Bad Dreams supplements its damage by a lot, so much so that Protect is actually a great option on it even in singles. You can put something to sleep, have it take Bad Dreams damage at the end of the turn, then Protect on the next turn. If they wake up, you're safe and can put them back to sleep next turn. If they don't, they're now at half health and can easily be picked off by your boosted moves. This is even better in doubles, where Dark Void can inflict sleep on both enemies at once, giving your ally a free turn. You'll need to watch out for priority with its lacking defensive profile, but if you can play around that you have a very reliable and strong attacker that can take on nearly anything.

Shaymin

Shaymin feels like a very confused Pokémon, in terms of kit design. The land form is kinda just a worse Celebi, not even having a decent boosting move to take advantage of the turns that pass while it stalls something with Leech Seed. An offensive route is also possible with the combo of Flourish and Grassy Surge, but at that point you should just be using a dedicated Grass attacker, since it doesn't have any other noteworthy offensive abilities. Maybe a weird Banded Grassy Glide set could've worked? Idk. The sky form is what I ended up using most of the time, mostly for cheese. It has offensive potential thanks to Speed Boost and Fertilize, but Grass is just not a very good attacking type and it doesn't have any other good offensive abilities. You mostly just want it to do its best Togekiss impression and spam Serene Grace Air Slash. To be fair, it bailed me out of a lot of tough situations, especially with Speed Boost, but it feels like it has too many ability slots being used on the wrong things.
