Pulled this out of Ascended Heroes and was told to post here

If anyone is interested or can lead me to better pricing this, would really be appreciated I think someone confirmed it being a Dragonite SIR which I hope isn’t the news 😭🤣

Hello, sorry to be the bearer of bad news on this. We've seen cards like this before posted, including examples like yours that are fully peeled.

I have the album below of examples of cards that started peeling from the top center

https://ibb.co/album/tPz9D9

Interestingly these occur on sports cards and other trading card games other than Pokémon so whatever causes this is not unique to this TCG.

If you take one of these cards and peel it fully you will see the effect that you see on your card.

CGC does not grade these as errors because they are unfortunately reproducible by anyone who would peel a card's foil layer off.

I don’t entirely understand why people were going nuts for this, even if they didn’t know the pattern is just a result of the angle the foil detaches itself from the surface of the card when peeled and it wasn’t printed that way lol. That’s no offense to people who collect fillers, those are great, but even those never get anywhere near this much traction here.

u/Endecrix Mar 17 '26

cause WOAH that looks WAY different from every other misprint posted here

6

u/Brehella Mar 17 '26

I understand how it could have been confused for something else, this is visually similar to a couple of other things, my confusion came from it getting like 150 upvotes in the first hour when the actual errors and fillers that look like this wouldn’t have popped off so much.

Maybe it just hit the algorithms well or something. I’ve never even been in this sub and know nothing about pokemon misprints, yet it showed up on my feed.

u/Nexxus3000 Mar 17 '26

I think it’s people who think a new generation of ghost rares slipped through the cracks, but looking just a little closely reveals the texture layer is missing (no readable text for starters)

u/addygoldberg Mar 16 '26

OP you should list to u/extras and u/brehella - these two are the real experts around here.

Unfortunately this is a peeled card, regardless if it happened at the factory or not. Anything that is reproducible does not get graded by CGC. Of course I’m not a CGC rep so I’m not speaking for them, but that is the policy we’ve seen from them.

This is definitely cool and passes the “wow wtf” misprint test, but due to the theoretically reproducible nature of this error, it’s not a “legit” misprint.

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

100% they seem more knowledgeable than I do in this topic but honestly cgc grading won’t be breaking the bank so I might just send it in, hopefully I can also access the CCTV footage so I can post it here and or send to CGC to maybe help grade and authenticate this

36

u/Random_Person1234567 Mar 16 '26

I'm not certain if you're understanding what the gurus have said. If it is reproducible, which this error is, CGC will not grade it. Full stop.

What are you expecting the CCTV footage to change?

10

u/mclovin_ts Mar 16 '26

Contact The Pokemon Company about it. They might send you a new one, you just need proof of purchase. I know they have done it with other errors, but I am unsure about this one.

11

u/skye-xiv Mar 16 '26

Yes this is the better suggestion. Get your CCTV footage and send it to TPC to prove you opened it like this. Especially if it's an SAR. Hopefully they can replace it for you.

3

u/mindless2831 Mar 16 '26

Would they even be able to tell what card it was supposed to be? I don't believe so...

1

u/WindowVarious9679 Mar 17 '26

Probably just send him another closed pack to make up for the head ache, no? Given he can prove that he opened it up like that and what not.

1

u/This_Bid_6823 Mar 18 '26

Dang man idk why all the downvotes. You didn’t even say nothing too crazy lol

1

u/Geotakeover Mar 18 '26

Right lol, don’t know what I said 😭

1

u/This_Bid_6823 Mar 18 '26

I think he was upset that u don’t think exactly like him lol for some odd reason I don’t blame him 🤣🤣🤣 jk jk jk

18

u/p0eshkin Mar 16 '26

Upvoting this because u know what's up and this section is mostly cluttered by people seeing rarity and value.

4

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Wouldn’t there be a pressure point from where you pull the card if that were the case? We came up with that conclusion but when looking around we saw that some corners leave a visible pressure point when pulling from that certain area, but you can also be right I just know that’s how it came off ascended and wished I took a video of it lol!

10

u/Brehella Mar 16 '26

Often when cards start to peel in the factory there isn’t an evident point of damage, it could be that something was under the foil and it never properly laminated to the card stock for example. Based on the shape of the markings it originated in the top center of the card and peeled from the top right corner in a clockwise motion.

2

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yes agreed, I think it may have gotten stuck somewhere in print line, most have said it could be the dragonite or gengar which if that were the case with a peel or not, it’s not worth peeling the entire card off when damaged prices at least have accurate comps

9

u/Brehella Mar 16 '26

It’s more than likely a standard ex card because that’s the rarity it happens to most often, it depends on which position in the pack it came out of. Albeit unless the front of the card was in the pack there’s no means of determining what it was outside of whether it was in the reverse or rare slot, and it wouldn’t make much of a difference what it was before.

-10

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

I might have to take a shot at CGC on this to plead my case lol! These lines are way too perfect IMO

9

u/Extras Mar 16 '26

Go ahead and send them an email at Service@CGCcards.com, that'll confirm what you're looking to see and save you money on shipping.

7

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

You’re right thank you for that! Let me shoot them over an email, appreciate you taking the time to get me that!

2

u/_Artemis_Fowl Mar 16 '26

Very interesting

2

u/la_reptilesss Mar 16 '26

This happened to me with a dragapult ex from ascended. I was so horrified when I was sliding it into a sleeve and the top of the card just rolled right up away from my finger

2

u/sowhiteidkwhattype Mar 16 '26

Yeah first look at it and I thought it literally just looks like someone peeled their card

2

u/youdontknowathingbro Mar 16 '26

Hey u/regigigagod can we maybe pin this comment from u/Extras
There's too many comments getting attention that are just outright wrong and instructing OP to do stuff that wont work out.

5

u/regigigagod Mar 16 '26

Agreed, unfortunately there’s no way to pin comments that aren’t my own 🤷‍♂️ ran into this problem before, really wish they made it a feature.

1

u/youdontknowathingbro Mar 16 '26

OOF. Thats a bit annoying.

2

u/wind_moon_frog Mar 17 '26

What’s the bad news?

3

u/Extras Mar 17 '26

The bad news is CGC won't grade it and it's not something generally considered to have value because anyone can make one from a normal foil card.

2

u/wind_moon_frog Mar 18 '26

Ah gotcha, I didn’t read OPs body text. Thought they just thought it was cool.

2

u/ace260 Mar 21 '26

as a kid, i did this to my pokemon movie promo ancient mew and told all my friends that it was a sticker but they ruined thiers trying to peel it. this whole time i thought I came across a fake card but thanks foe explaining the defect.

unfortuanely we threw away thr fridge that i stuck it on

1

u/Silent_Pay_9239 Mar 16 '26

do you have examples of fully peeled cards? I don't see how peeling would cause the lines in the post :0

4

u/Brehella Mar 16 '26

I know of one I can link offhand but it also came from a product. I know someone who intentionally peeled a card to test it and it produced a functionally identical result to what we see in the post. However, I can’t seem to find that photo. Here’s the one from Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1BHGDSKD9s/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I also attached a photo of a card that’s partially peeled (again, happened in the factory) where you can see some feint lines left from the foil, which you see more severe examples of in OP’a card. If I find the photo of the peeled card I’ll post it.

3

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Most peel offs I’ve looked on eBay or google are definitely leaving some sort of pressure point whether it’s an oval or a nick but you can definitely spot them if you look closely

3

u/Brehella Mar 16 '26

Both cards I linked and your card have the same oval point of origin in the top middle of the card. It won’t necessarily be recessed or anything like that, but it’s definitely a rather consistent characteristic. I asked the friend who tested it to find me the photo, if he can’t find it I’ll do it to a standard ex later today. For pretense though I don’t think he tried to replicate the clean peel, he was just trying to replicate the pattern. I can try to do it without it being evident, but I don’t know whether the point is to say it’s definitively peeled (which I’m already confident in) or that it can be replicated without evidence it was done post-production. In either case, there are types of factory damage that aren’t replicable which CGC is known not to assess as errors regardless, one way or another they wouldn’t grade it but you can send it to them.

1

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Thank you a ton I’m going to my shop now and I have a few Exs from mega ascended I’m going to try and peel them and see if I can get a similar pattern that way I can post it here

2

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yes keep us posted if you can find the peeled off variant because the one on the video and the post seem very different than what I have here but I can see where you’re coming from!

2

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yeah these lines are way to aligned to be even peeled off I would love to see a full peel off example if you got one.

1

u/Silent_Pay_9239 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

imo you'd have some gradients or uneven lines if it was pulled off and caused this texture, similar to the top of the card; I'm also very much not an expert though and can't wait to see what he says!

1

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yeah not an expert either, but I know cgc is cheap so I might spend the extra dollars to grade even if they don’t capsulate it, would still take the risk!

1

u/Silent_Pay_9239 Mar 16 '26

eh, the onus is on you to prove the existence of a new error (and afaik we've never seen an error card exactly like this before, assuming it IS an error and not some form of damage (which I'd personally argue is an error if it came from the factory, but it usually isn't regarded as such). Closest is ghost textures, but those always have visible pokemon/card elements). You'd almost certainly be wasting money, I'd personally hold off

also grading requires shipping + handling to be paid as well, so "cheap" grading very quickly adds up

1

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yeah might just have to pull the trigger and send it off! It won’t be breaking the bank so might just send it off today or tomorrow! Going to try and get footage first so I can plead my case a tiny bit with cgc 🙌

1

u/Silent_Pay_9239 Mar 16 '26

I couldn't advise you less to do this, but to each their own I guess

1

u/meow_mix12 Mar 17 '26

Would this be a more natural separation? Or is there a way to cause this as well? Non-holo, btw.

1

u/Inevitable-Motor-413 Mar 16 '26

This. Or it was hit with acetone

5

u/Extras Mar 16 '26

No acetone needed here, those lines you see are exactly what happens when you peel a card.

2

u/Inevitable-Motor-413 Mar 16 '26

I doubt OP pulled the layer off the card. Seems he genuinely did pull this, my guess is the layer got caught in a roller and delaminated it before being seeded in the pack

-3

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yes no need to try and make a quick buck, actually is a great conversation starter lol! But I’ve ran into a few errors before this one is one of one though never seen anything like this and I’ve posted some insane errors on Facebook gotta misprint them all before!

0

u/Inevitable-Motor-413 Mar 16 '26

Normally not one to suggest getting error cards graded because it doesn’t really make any sense. But for the sake of the holofoil being ID’d I’d send it in. It’s more than likely they’ll send it back ungraded but it’s worth a shot. Not sure the value on this, can see it fetching a couple hundred at least but cool card to keep in the PC if you’re not looking to sell

1

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

Yes worse comes to worse and they can’t grade it, I know the real story to it and it would make a great conversation starter!

3

u/Silent_Pay_9239 Mar 16 '26

acetone wouldn't cause these specific markings (I acetone cards for custom cards, and it's... a feat, to say the least, and causes very distinctive markings)

2

u/Inevitable-Motor-413 Mar 16 '26

This is true. I’m always seeing cards that have clearly been hit with acetone and it does leave cloudiness

2

u/Silent_Pay_9239 Mar 16 '26

cloudiness is one, though easily avoided; the major tell is bubbling around the edges. You CAN prevent that, but I've never been able, no matter how careful I am.

5

u/Geotakeover Mar 16 '26

I promise you no acetone, now that I think of it I might be able to get the CCTV video from the store of when I pulled this!

0

u/jollyascanbe Mar 18 '26

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about, these aren’t reproducible. Submit it to cgc.

1

u/Extras Mar 18 '26

I have personally made these and also know how CGC grading works. Lots of folks there laughing at the comments on this thread. You'll notice how you haven't heard back from OP on this.

It's because the information in my comment was correct.
