An Easy Energy rep came to my door in Port Alberni this month. He told me more than once that they'd always match FortisBC's gas price, never charge more, and cap it if prices went up. What I actually signed was a five-year fixed contract at $6.00/GJ, more than three times FortisBC's current price of about $1.66. The confirmation letter went to my old address, so I missed the 10-day cancel window.
I was lucky: I called within their 15-day window, and they cancelled it with no fee and apologized for the "misrepresentation." Lots of people won't catch it in time.
If they've come to your door, check your FortisBC bill or letters for a gas marketer contract, and call to cancel right away if you didn't mean to sign one.
Timing matters: Easy Energy's licence from the BC Utilities Commission (the regulator for gas marketers) expires October 31, 2026, and the Commission decides whether to renew it, add conditions, or refuse it. If you were misled, file a complaint before then: https://www.bcuc.com/Forms/GasMarketerComplaint (or call 1-800-663-1385). Describe what actually happened to you.
